I’ve been blogging a little over a year now. When I first started, I never dreamed I would get to where I am now. It’s been an uphill battle sometimes…but overall, I am SO glad I started my Blog!

So today I want to show you how far I’ve come!

To some people, this might sound a bit strange. Why would I want to put my income out there for everyone to see?

Really, the answer is simple. There are 2 reasons. First, I want you to be able to see and understand HOW Blogs make money. And second, I want to encourage you guys to start a blog as well!

I think sometimes people can have a “high” view of bloggers. Like what we do is cool…but too hard for just anyone to do.

But honestly, I am a normal, average person. I am just like you. Trust me—if I can start a blog, you can too!

How I Made Over $1,900 Crochet Blogging

All right, let’s jump right in!

April INCOME:

• Mediavine Ads: $559
• Etsy Pattern Sales: $427.61

May INCOME:

• Mediavine Ads: $664.61
• Etsy Pattern Sales: $505.41
• Affiliate income: $11.07

April & May EXPENSES:

• Madmimi (Email Marketing): $54 ($27 per month)
• Blog hosting: $0
• Tech Editing: $25
• Yarn: $45
• Etsy Pattern Fees: $46.90 for April, $55.29 for May

Net Profit: $1,941.44

Okay, so let’s talk through these numbers a bit. First of all, Mediavine ads are amazing. I was with Google Adsense for awhile, and the earnings were very slim. Once I switched Mediavine, it was like an instant win! I went from making $50-100 to $500+ just from ads alone!

Etsy pattern sales have also been going strong. Basically, PDF patterns are a gold mine. As you can see, they usually account for 1/3 – 1/2 of my income!

You might be wondering about the $0 for blog hosting—that’s because I have a super awesome hosting plan! I signed up for Bluehost at the very beginning of my Blog; basically, I paid around $150 to start up, and after that the hosting is free for 3 years! After the 3 years are up, I will pay a small monthly fee, but for now, I don’t have to pay anything!

Traffic Report

Now let’s take a look at what type of page views I had in order to earn this kind of money.

April:

• Monthly Sessions: 35,000 (this is according to google analytics)
• Total Page Views: 52,637
• Monthly Visitors: 26,236

May:

• Monthly Sessions: 37,700 (this is according to google analytics)
• Total Page Views: 59,268
• Monthly Visitors: 27,879

Page views were down in April, but back up a bit in May (yay!) I actually wasn’t expecting that, because normally Spring/Summer is the “down” season for crochet, so everyone expects to have less traffic.

However, I had some really successful pattern releases, so everything kept going stronger than I had anticipated!

Other Successes

A few other things happened this month that haven’t made me money yet, but WILL in the near future!

First of all, I was commissioned by Darn Good Yarn to design a pattern! I haven’t gotten paid yet, but I will soon when the pattern releases!

Secondly, I got a design accepted into the I Like Crochet Magazine! I won’t get paid until the issue is released in October, but this is still very exciting!

Starting a Blog

Overall, I hope this has given you an idea of where I’m at in blogging, and where you CAN be!
