Easy Crochet Sunflower Coaster

Coasters are even better when they involve a flower. Sunflowers are such a timeless, beautiful flower. When I first had the idea for sunflower coasters, I wanted something that would be quick and easy, but still make a statement.

I ended up doing a simple center made from single and half double crochet. Then, limited the petal round to just 1 round. I know some patterns have layered petals, but I really wanted to keep this at an easy level. It turned out just as I was hoping!

Materials You Will Need

To make these coasters you’ll need some worsted weight yarn and a G/4.5mm crochet hook. You can really use ANY worsted weight yarn you have in your stash that is brown and yellow. But here’s what I used:

• Lion Brand Heartland for the center: using Heartland gives the center a more realistic look because it is not a complete solid. It has a few shades of brown woven together for a “marled” type look.
• Yarn Bee Soft Secret for the petals: I couldn’t find a better yellow to make the petals with. Soft secret in the color “honey” is just perfect. Not to mention, this is an ultra soft yarn and the way it is spun together gives the petals the perfect feel and look.

A quick and easy project to brighten up your home: a Sunflower Coaster! This coaster is a great project for Spring or Summer decor, and it is sure to make a statement with its bright colors. Make a few for yourself or a whole set to give away!

Materials:

• Lion Brand Heartland Yarn (100% acrylic, 251 yds/230 m, 5 oz/142 g) 1 skein Sequoia
• Yarn Bee Soft Secret Yarn (100% acrylic, 300 yds/274 m, 6 oz/170 g) 1 ball Honey
• Or any worsted weight yarn in yellow and brown
• G/4.5mm crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Steam blocking materials

To make this as a scrubby like pictured in the Kitchen & Bath CAL, use COTTON yarn for the center and Red Heart Scrubby for the petals!

Notes:

1. Ch 1 at beginning of rounds does NOT count as a sc.
2. I highly recommend using the yarns mentioned above. The Heartland yarn has a marled look to it, so it really makes the center look like a sunflower!
3. Please do not neglect to steam block your finished coaster. It will not lay flat until you steam block it, so this step is very important.
4. Change up the yarn you use to make this pattern into a scrubby instead of a coaster! (see materials note above) Scrubby pictured below:

Written Instructions:

Center:

Ch 3.

Rnd 1: Make 10 hdc in the 3rd ch from hook. Join with a sl st to first hdc (NOT ch). (10 hdc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st. 2 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to first sc. (20 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, (hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st) 10 times. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (30 hdc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, (sc in next 2 hdc, 2 sc in next hdc) 10 times. Join with a sl st to first sc. (40 sc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, (hdc in next 3 sc, 2 hdc in next sc) 10 times. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (50 hdc)

Petals:

Rnd 1: Join yellow with a sc in the st 2 sts before sl st. (Dc, tr, ch 2, sl st in second ch from hook, tr, dc) in next st. Sc in next sl st. Sc in the space where the sl st was joined at the end of the last rnd (see tutorial!), *(Dc, tr, ch 2, sl st in second ch from hook, tr, dc) in next st. Sc in next 2 sts. Rep from * 15 times. On last repeat, omit last sc and simply sl st to first sc. (17 petals)

Step 1:

Make the center of the sunflower by alternating single crochet and half double crochet rounds. You will increase in the typical way that circles are made. This is what it should look like as you go along:

Fasten off the brown once you finish the center.

Step 2:

The petal round is what I wanted to show step by step because it has some tricky parts to it! Start by joining your yellow yarn with a single crochet in two sc to the right of the slip stitch.

Step 3:

Start making the first petal. Make a double crochet and a triple crochet in the next stitch. Then make a picot stitch by chaining two and slip stitching in the first chain. After the picot is complete, make another triple and double crochet in the same stitch.

Step 4:

Now we need to do one quick thing to make sure we have enough stitches to make petals around evenly. We also need to work over the slip stitch so that it won’t be visible. First, make a single crochet in the top of the slip stitch. Then, make a single crochet in the BASE of the slip stitch. The needles in the photos below show these two spaces.

Step 5:

Now from here on out it will be smooth sailing! Repeat the process to make another petal (dc, tr, ch 2, sl st in second ch, tr, dc). Then, single crochet in the next 2 stitches.

Step 6:

Simply repeat step 5 all the way around! Alternate between making a pedal, and doing 2 regular single crochets.

FAQ

Can I use a different yarn than the pattern calls for?

Yes, you definitely can! Any worsted weight yarn will work for this coaster. While I used acrylic and love it, you can also try cotton if you prefer something more eco-friendly.

Does cotton yarn need to be used for coasters?

Speaking of cotton…NO, it is not a requirement to use cotton for coasters. Some people adamantly state that it is, saying that if you set a hot cup on an acrylic coaster it will melt. While acrylic yarn DOES melt if you iron it (see this post) a cup with hot liquid in it is NOT hot enough to melt it. So the choice of cotton or acrylic yarn for coasters is entirely up to your own personal preference.

How are crochet flowers made?

Crochet flowers are generally made by starting in the center and working outward in the round. That is definitely the case with these sunflower coasters. You go around and around for the brown part, and then do some special stitches in gold to form the petals!

How should I wash these coasters?

If you use the yarn I use, you can wash these coasters with a regular load of kitchen laundry! The yarn is both machine washable and dryable. If you change up the yarn, make sure to follow the care instructions on the label.

Do I have to block my sunflower coaster?

YES! Yes yes yes. I promise you, you will be much more happy with your finished coasters if you block them rather than leave them as is. Choosing not to block is usually just because of laziness (I’ve been there too, trust me). But this is one project that benefits so much from blocking. You will need to steam block them. After you’re done, your coasters will lay perfectly flat!

Can I make this coaster into a different flower?

You could definitely get creative with it, yes! First of all, you can simply switch up the petal color if you don’t want it to be a sunflower. You can also make the center a round shorter if you don’t want it to be so big (since many other flowers have a smaller center). Just make sure you have a multiple of 3 on the round before you try to do the petal round.
