All right…I am super excited to finally share this info with you guys! I want to give you a quick outline of what we’re going to talk about. First, I’ll give you a few reasons why you SHOULD start a blog. Next, I’ll get to the nitty-gritty and show you guys how to start a blog practically, step-by-step. Don’t worry, I’ll walk you through all the details. Finally, I’ll talk more about some of those fears people have with blogging, and how to overcome them.

So let’s dive right in!

How to Start a DIY Blog

Why You Should Start a Blog

Okay, so what’s the big deal anyway? What is this thing about blogging, and why should you get in on it? Let me show you the main reasons you should start a blog.

1. Blogging is Profitable

Yes. When I say “start a blog” I mean (hopefully) a money-making blog. Sure, you can start a blog just for fun. But…if could make money off of it, why wouldn’t you? And as long as you are willing to work hard, you CAN start a blog that makes you a nice income.

On that note, I will be publishing a follow up post to this one, showing you how to monetize (make money off of) your blog. Sign up for my blogging emails list to be notified when it’s live!

2. Blogging Helps Others

So, if you start a money-making blog, that’s only benefiting YOU, right? Not so fast. Blogging is definitely not just about the blogger; it is about meeting the needs of your audience. If your blog IS making you money, that means a lot of people are reading it (since page views=$$). And if lots of people are reading what you put out there, that means you have a GIANT opportunity to help others! Think about it. Blogging allows you to get paid to offer something to the public for FREE that would normally cost. (i.e. My crochet patterns would normally be paid only, but blogging allows me to offer them free!) Pretty neat, right?

Okay, there are a LOT more reasons why you should start a blog…but we don’t have time for them right now! So let’s move on to our second section.

How to Start a Blog

All right, let’s now go through the basic steps it takes to start your own blog.

1. Domain and Hosting

These are 2 words you’ll definitely need to know if you’re going to start a blog. A “domain” is what your web address will be—it is usually the name of your blog! For example, I am www.desertblossomcrafts.com. You can check if the name you’d like is available when you go to Bluehost.

Now, Bluehost is a “hosting” service. Hosting is basically the space your blog will “live” or be stored on the internet. Paying for hosting is the main fee you will have to pay to start your blog. The great thing is, the first payment at Bluehost covers 3 YEARS of hosting! So once you pay, you’ll be covered for that amount of time.

There are other hosting services out there, but I highly recommend Bluehost! I have been blogging for over a year and I’ve never had any issues with my blog. Bluehost is also super easy to use. After signing up, you’ll be able to install WordPress (the best blogging software out there) with only 1 click!

Bluehost is also having a huge SALE right now on their hosting! It is a birthday sale, and you can get hosting for just $2.65 a month on July 15-16 only! This is just about the cheapest you’ll ever see it, so don’t miss out!

So to start setting up your blog, click over to Bluehost (this will take you to the sale too!) and click “Get Started.” Next, select your plan. I recommend starting with the most basic plan because that’s all you need when you’re first starting out. After you’ve done this, you’ll see a page as follows:

Here is where you can try out domain names! Assuming you’re a beginner without a blog as of yet, you will want to type in the “create a new domain” box. It will tell you here if the name is available or not. The domain name comes free with your hosting plan! (Some hosting sites have you pay for the domain separately).

Next, you’ll be asked to create an account. You will see what is included in your package, and you’ll also have the option to add on some extra things as well.

Finally, add your payment details, and you’re all set!

The next thing you need to do is login to your new account and get familiar with everything. WordPress is the software you will use to do everything with your new blog—publish posts, make edits, etc. Now, don’t get scared, because WordPress is totally free, and Bluehost integrates it automatically for you! Great, right?

Once you’re logged in, you’ll need to pick a theme for your website.

Next, log in to WordPress and click “Start Building”.

Now you’re all set to start working on your blog through WordPress! Check out the features and get familiar by clicking the buttons on the left sidebar. You can add your first post by clicking on “Posts” on that same sidebar you see below.

When you’re all ready, you can launch your site! I actually recommend having a few posts published before you launch your site. I didn’t do this, and so I literally had only 1 post on my blog when the people started viewing it. (However, also keep in mind that there won’t be a ton of people viewing your blog at the very beginning).

Woohoo! You’ve done it! You’ve started your very own blog! NOW comes the fun part.

From here, you can keep customizing your website—deciding exactly how you want it to look. As far as themes go, WordPress has some free ones. However, if I’m being honest, they’re not the prettiest in the world. I got my theme from Beautiful Dawn Designs. Tiffany has some beautiful themes that I definitely recommend!

So now we’ve covered the basics you need to know to start a blog. Are you convinced yet, or are you still on the fence?

Let’s get back to the topic of fears for a second—anything that might be holding you back. If you’re reading this post on the fence about whether you want to start a blog, I want you to ask yourself something. Right here right now.

What is the PRIMARY reason you haven’t started a blog yet?

I want you to really think about this question, and come to a conclusion.

Is it the price? The time it would take? The tech stuff? Or maybe it goes deeper than that…are you afraid you’re not good enough? Are you afraid of failure?

I don’t know what conclusion you may come to. But I do know that most of those reasons I listed above, along with others, come back to fear. Whether it’s fear of blogging tasks, fear within yourself, or fear of what the outcome might be—any of those fears could be the barrier between you and a successful blog.

Now look—I get it. It IS scary to start a blog. However, if we always act out of fear, we will never see our dreams fulfilled! So I challenge you today. Step out there. Take a risk. Work at it with everything you have. And then, reap the rewards. Because I promise, if you put in the work, you won’t be disappointed.

Don’t forget to take the FIRST STEP and sign up for hosting with Bluehost! You won’t regret it! And if you have questions, feel free to contact me.

    1. That will be once you get to WordPress – just go to that sidebar and click “posts”. Then there will be a button that says “add new post”. Click that and then start typing!
