I love this pillow because it can be a cute decoration for your house, OR a snuggle companion for your kids! The velvet yarn makes it sooo soft and cuddly.

I know the velvet yarn debate is huge…but personally, I love it for things like this. It gives this pillow a fabric effect. From a distance, you can’t tell it’s crocheted!

Velveteen Rabbit Pillow

Notes:

1. Pillow is worked in joined rounds from the bottom up, in a long oval shape. Top is seamed. Ears are worked separately from the bottom up and sewn on.
2. Ch 1 at beginning of rounds does NOT count as st
3. MAKE SURE to count your stitches at the end of each round. Especially with velvet yarn, it is easy to skip a stitch, and this will throw off the increases and decreases. Stitch counts are provided at the end of each round—make sure to check your stitches against them!

Materials:

• 1 skein of Bernat Baby Velvet yarn
• Pink Fingering weight yarn (very small amount for nose)
• H/5mm Crochet Hook
• 3.5mm hook (for nose)
• Yarn needle
• Stuffing
• Embroidery Thread in black or dark blue (for eyes)

Approximately 11.5” long, and 12” tall including ears

Ch 45.

Row 1: NOTE: you will be working on both sides of the chain to achieve an oval affect.

NOSE

With 3.5mm hook and fingering weight yarn, ch 7.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, Sc2tog. Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog. Turn.

Row 3: ch 1, sc across. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, (Sc2tog) twice. Turn.

FINISHING

Step 1: Embroidering the eyes. Feel free to eyeball it if you’d like. However, I’ll tell you exactly where I placed my eyes:

Count approximately 12 sts from the side of head for the edge of the eye, and 13 rows from top of head. Place 8 sts between the span of one eye. And finally, leave 15 sts in between the two eyes.

Step 2: Attach the Nose. I placed mine 11 rows up from the bottom of head.

Step 3: Stuff your head! Then, sew the top closed. I used a whipstitch seam.

Step 4: Use a thin layer of stuffing to line the ears. You don’t want them to be too puffy, but you also don’t want them to flop too much.

Step 5: Sew the bottom of the ears closed.

Step 6: Sew the ears on the head! Place the ears at the back of the pillow to sew on. You want to sew them a few rows down to give them a bit more support to stand up. (They will still be somewhat floppy, but not as much if you attach them well.)

Weave in all ends—you’re done!

Anyway, I’ve always loved the woven stitch, because it lets crocheting come close to looking like knitting! Feel free to check out my tutorial for this stitch here. 

Today I want to share with you a pattern that incorporates this stitch—the Knit-Look Pillow!

For this pattern, I incorporated the knit-like woven stitch and a nice bobble stitch for some texture. I love the way it turned out!!

Funny story, though…believe it or not, this pillow started out as a sweater. I know. Crazy. I was going to have 2 rectangular panels sewn together, with sleeves added on, etc.

Well, I got to the end of one panel, and realized that the yarn I was using was NOT stretchy enough—so the panel was way too small. Not to mention the fact that the fabric was very thick and wouldn’t look right as a sweater.

Design problems…sigh.

Needless to say, I was quite discouraged. However, eventually I decided I needed to find a new use for my large rectangle. After much thought, I finally realized it would make a perfect pillow!

And I must say, I’m quite pleased with the way it turned out. Plus, it was a perfect gift for my Grandma (that’s her furniture in the picture below!)

1. Pillow is worked in one long rectangle, which is then sewn on the top and sides.

1. When turning, ch 3 counts as a dc
2. When turning, ch 1 does NOT count as a sc

Materials:

• Lion Brand Feels Like Butta’ Yarn, 2 skeins (or other worsted weight yarn)

• H/8 crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge)

• Yarn needle

Gauge:

16 sc and 24 rows in woven stitch = 4”

Finished Measurements:

Panel: 19” long by 15” wide

Abbreviations/Stitches Used:

Chain – ch

Single crochet – sc

Cluster – CL

Yarn Over – YO

Repeat – rep

Each – ea

Skip – sk

Stitch(es) – st(s)

Special Stitches:

Woven Stitch: Insert hook into the MIDDLE of next sc—not in the top two loops, but in the middle of the “v”. Then complete a regular single crochet. (The only unique thing about this stitch is where you originally insert the hook). For a tutorial on this stitch, visit this blog post.

Cluster (CL): Yo, insert hook in indicated st. (YO, pull up loop in same stitch) 3 times. YO, pull through 6 loops on hook, YO, pull through last 2 loops on hook.

Instructions:

Ch 62.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn. (61 sc)

Rows 2-9: Ch 1 (does NOT count as sc, here and throughout) sc in first sc. Work woven stitch across till one sc left. Sc in last sc. Turn.

Row 10: Ch 3, dc in next st. *Ch 1, sk next st, CL in next st. Rep from * till 3 sts left. Ch 1, sk next st, dc in last 2 sts. Turn. (28 CL)

Row 11: Sc in first 2 dc.Sc in next ch-1 sp. *Sc in next CL, sc in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * till 2 dc left; sc in last 2 dc.

Rows 12-13: Ch 1 (does NOT count as sc, here and throughout) sc in first sc. Work woven stitch across till one sc left. Sc in last sc. Turn. (61 sc)

Row 14: Rep row 10.

Row 15: rep row 11.

Row 16-23: Ch 1 (does NOT count as sc, here and throughout) sc in first sc. Work woven stitch across till one sc left. Sc in last sc. Turn. (61 sc)

Rep rows 10-23 4 times more. Then rep rows 10-14 once more. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Finishing

1. With Right sides together, fold the rectangle in half and whipstitch the top of pillow shut (the long sides.)

1. Turn pillow cover so that the right sides are now facing out. You should now have a tube.

1. Insert the pillow form.
2. Sew up the sides, making sure to match up the rows of bobbles and the rows of woven stitch.
