Puff stitches are a favorite of mine. I just LOVE the texture they can bring to any project.

One thing I love to do with puffs are combine them in different ways and patterns. So far, I’ve worked up 4 different swatches that use the puff stitch in a variety of ways. Here is a quick reference list if you want to check them out:

• The Harvest Stitch
• The Pinecone Stitch
• The Alternating Puff Stitch

This new stitch, the Wheat Stitch, is probably the most complex of the 4 stitches! It’s not difficult to make, but it has a few more repeating rows to get the nice pattern you see below:

HOW TO CROCHET THE WHEAT STITCH

All right, let’s get started on this stitch pattern!

NOTES: 

1. Stitch pattern is multiple of 6+1
2. Ch 3 at beginning of rows counts as dc
3. Ch 1 at beginning of rows does NOT count as sc

MATERIALS

You can potentially use ANY yarn and hook for this stitch. However, here’s what I used:

• Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Mary Maxim Woodlands, but you can use anything)
• H/5mm Hook

SPECIAL STITCH: PUFF STITCH (PUFF ST)

YO, insert hook into indicated st. YO, pull up a loop. (YO, insert hook into same st, YO, pull up a loop) 2 times. YO, pull through 6 loops on hook. YO, pull through last 2 loops on hook.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Fsc a multiple of 6+1 (to start with a chain stitch, you’ll need a multiple of  6+2, and then one row of single crochet). 

Row 1: Ch 3, dc in next fsc. Sk 1 fsc, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next fsc. *Ch 2, sk 2 fsc, sc in next fsc. Ch 2, sk 2 fsc, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next fsc. Rep from * until 3 fsc left. Sk 1 fsc, dc in last 2 fsc, turn. 

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in next dc. Sk next puff st, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next ch-2 sp. *Ch 2, sk next puff st and ch-2 sp, sc in next sc. Ch 2, sk next ch-2 sp and puff st, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next ch-2 sp. Rep from * until 1 puff st and 2 dc are left. Sk next puff st, dc in last 2 dc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first 2 dc. Sc in next puff st, sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next puff st. *Ch 3, sk next ch-2 sps and sc, sc in next puff st. Sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next puff st. Rep from * until 2 sts left. Sc in last 2 dc, turn. 

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in next sc. Ch 2, sk next sc, sc in next sc. Ch 2, sk next sc, *(puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next ch-3 sp. Ch 2, sk next sc, sc in next sc. Ch 2, sk next sc. Rep from * until 2 sc left. Dc in last 2 sc, turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc. Ch 3, sk ch-2 sps and sc, *sc in next puff st, sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next puff st. Ch 3, sk ch-2 sps and sc. Rep from * until 2 dc left. Sc in last 2 dc, turn. 

Row 7: Ch 3, dc in next dc. (Puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next ch-3 sp. *Ch 2, sk next sc, sc in next sc. Ch 2, sk next sc, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next ch-3 sp. Rep from * until 2 sc left. Dc in last 2 sc, turn. 

Rep rows 2-7 for stitch pattern!
