As mentioned, I know at first glance this stitch looks like the Waffle Stitch. HOWEVER, don’t worry! Although it looks similar, is is made in a different way. While the Waffle stitch uses fpdc or fptr to create the “squares”, this stitch uses fpsc and regular dc! Also, the backside looks very different from the back of the waffle stitch. Intrigued yet? Read on to find out more about the Windowpane stitch and how to make it!

I first made this stitch as I was experimenting with post stitch single crochet. This isn’t a stitch you see as often—usually, people use the front post double or triple crochet. However, the fpsc can be useful at times too! It is made in the exact same way as any other post stitch. You simply work a sc, but around the post of a stitch rather than the top loops. Don’t worry, it’s not hard!

How to Crochet the Windowpane Stitch

All right, let’s get started!

Notes

• Stitch pattern is a multiple of 3
• Ch 3 at beginning of rows counts as dc
• Ch 1 at beginning of rows does NOT count as sc

Materials

You can potentially use ANY yarn and hook for this stitch. However, here’s what I used:

1. Lion Brand Feels Like Butta yarn (worsted weight)
2. H/8 (5mm) crochet hook

Instructions

NOTE: For a picture tutorial going along with these written instructions, be sure to view the video above! It will show you pictures to help with any tricky steps. You can pause it at any time if you need to focus in on a given step!

Fsc a multiple of 3 (to start with a chain stitch, you’ll need a multiple of 3+1, and then one row of single crochet). 

Row 1: Ch 3, dc across. Turn. 

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in next 2 sc. *Fpsc around next dc, ch 2, fpsc around next dc. Sc in next dc. Rep from * until 1 st left. Sc in last st, turn.
