To me, bags are just one of those projects that are FUN to make.

I love to make lots of things – sweaters, scarves, etc. But bags are one of my favorites!

They’re not a huge project, but last long enough to keep you interested.

Do you know what I mean?

Anyway, the Cielo Bag was such a joy to design. It uses a fluffy, wonderful bulky weight yarn, and is the perfect summer accessory!

How is the Bag Made?

No need to worry about complex construction with this bag! We’ll start with a simple oval at the base of the bag.

After a few rounds, we’ll work in the back loop all the way around to prepare for the body of the bag.

As we work up the sides, there will be a few increases on the edges to create that nice shape. And finally, we’ll add a touch of contrast near the top!

The stitches used are mainly single-crochet, with the exception of the contrasting color rounds.

Do I Need to Obtain Gauge for this pattern?

Honestly, this is totally up to you. If you would like your bag to turn out the same size as mine, you will want to make a gauge swatch in the round and make sure you match up with the gauge listed.

However, if you’re all right with the bag turning out a different size, go ahead and just jump in!

The Materials

You guys, I LOVE the yarn I used for this pattern. (And no, I am not getting paid to recommend it).

I bought the new Hook Nook Yummy Yarn of my own accord, and it was the best choice ever for this bag! It’s the perfect mix of fluffy and twist.

Cielo Bag – Easy & Free Crochet Bag Pattern

Materials:

• The Hook Nook Yummy Yarn: 2 skeins of Blue Skies (color A), and one skein of Like a Dove (color B)
• K/6.5mm crochet hook 
• Yarn needle

Notes:

1. Ch 1 at beginning of rounds does NOT count as a stitch
2. Tutorial is separate from the regular written pattern to make for easy printing
3. Entire bag is worked with two strands of yarn held together

Measurements: 

Approximately 13” tall laying flat, not including straps 

Gauge

10 stitches & 11 rnds of even sc = 4”

Note: if you want your bag to be the same size as mine, be sure to make a gauge swatch! If you’re not concerned with the exact size, you’ll do fine without gauge. Just know that your bag will look the closest to mine if you do obtain gauge.

Abbreviations/Stitches Used (U.S.) 

Chain – ch

Single crochet – sc

Instructions:

Holding 2 strands together of color A, ch 24.

Rnd 1: Sc in second ch from hook and next 21 ch. 2 sc in last ch. Turn work so that you are working on the opposite side of the ch. Sc in the bottom of next 23 ch. Sc in first ch again, making an increase. Join with sl st to beg sc. (48 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st. Sc in next 23 sc. 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 23 sc. Sc in first sc again, making increase. Join with sl st to beg sc. (50 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, work 2 sc in same st as sl st. Sc in next 23 sc. (2 sc in next sc) twice. Sc in next 23 sc. 2 sc in last sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (54 sc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, work 2 sc in same st as sl st. Sc in next 25 sc. (2 sc in next sc) twice. Sc in next 25 sc. 2 sc in last sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (58 sc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in the BL of ea sc around. Join with sl st to beg sc. (58 BL sc)

Rnd 6-8: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st and ea sc around. Join with sl st to beg sc. (58 sc)

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st. Sc in next 28 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Sc in next 28 sc. Sc in first sc again, making increase. Join with sl st to beg sc. (60 sc)

Rnd 10-12: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st and ea sc around. Join with sl st to beg sc. (60 sc)

Rnd 13: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st. Sc in next 29 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Sc in next 29 sc. Sc in first sc again, making increase. Join with sl st to beg sc. (62 sc)

Rnd 14-16: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st and ea sc around. Join with sl st to beg sc. (62 sc)

Rnd 17: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st. Sc in next 30 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Sc in next 30 sc. Sc in first sc again, making increase. Join with sl st to beg sc. (64 sc)

Rnd 18-30: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st and ea sc around. Join with sl st to beg sc. (64 sc)

On the joining sl st of Rnd 30, YO with color B to transition into next rnd.

Rnd 31: With 2 strands of color B, ch 1. Sc in same st as sl st and ea sc around. Join with sl st to beg sc. (64 sc)

Rnd 32: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st. *Ch 3, sk next sc, sc in next sc. Rep from * around. On last repeat, omit last sc and simply sl st to beginning sc. (32 ch-3 sps & 32 sc)

Rnd 33: Ch 1, 2 sc in next ch-3 sp. Work 2 sc in every ch-3 sp around. Join with sl st to beg sc. For this join, YO with color A again to transition to next row. (64 sc) 

Rnd 34: With color A, ch 1. Sc in same st as sl st and ea sc around. Join with sl st to beg sc. (64 sc)

Rnd 35: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st and ea sc around. Join with sl st to beg sc. (64 sc)

Fasten off and weave in all ends. 

FINISHING

If desired, line bag with fabric.

Sew handles on either side of bag.

Some people love big purses, but I happen to be a tiny-purse kind of gal. My stuff gets lost easily enough in a small purse—I don’t know how I would ever manage with a bigger one!

While we were on our big tour of the East Coast this summer, I knew I wanted to something small and light for my wallet and a few other necessities—so I designed this purse! (Literally, I made most of it on the plane)

I used it throughout our three-week trip, and it held up really well!

The Yarn

The yarn I used for this purse is Lion Brand Flikka. This yarn was so much fun to work with. I loved how the colors made a neat pattern as I worked.

It is a worsted weight cotton, so it has a good amount of durability. My handbag held up well even after 3 weeks of heavy use!

  MATERIALS:

• G Hook (or a size that gives you a tight tension. You don’t want the bag to be super loose)
• Yarn needle

NOTES:

1. Bag is made from the bottom up and is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join at the end of rounds unless otherwise specified.

MEASUREMENTS:

When laid out flat, from base to top edge: approximately 8″

Width at widest point: 6 1/2″

INSTRUCTIONS:

Ch 2.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in ea sc around. (12 sc) Place marker in last stitch, and move up at the end of each round.

Rnd 3: *Sc in 1st sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. (18 sc)

Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. (24 sc)

Rnd 5: *Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. (30 sc)

Rnd 6: *Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. (36 sc)

Rnd 7: *Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. (42 sc)

Rnd 8: *Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around (48 sc)

Rnd 9: *Sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. (54 sc)

Rnd 10: *Sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around. (60 sc)

Rnds 11-34: sc in each sc around. (60 sc). At the end of rnd 34, JOIN with a sl st to first sc in that rnd.

Rnd 35: Ch 3 (counts as dc) dc in next st. Ch 1. *Sk next st, Dc in next 2 sts. Ch 1. Rep from * around. Join with a sl st to beg ch 3.

Rnd 36: Ch 1 (counts as sc) sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp around. (60 sc). Join with a sl st to beg ch 1.

Rnd 37: Ch 1, work the crab stitch (backward single crochet) around. For a tutorial on the crab stitch, click here. Do not fasten off.

Strap

Ch 130 (or ch to desired strap length). I made my chain slightly shorter than I wanted the strap to be, since it did stretch a couple inches after use.

Being careful not to twist ch, sl st to the opposite side of the bag. Turn.

Last row: Sl st across all ch. Do one last sl st to the edge of the bag to secure. Fasten off and weave in ends.

If desired, weave an extra piece of yarn through the open holes in the double-crochet round as a drawstring.
