The inspiration for this wall hanging pretty much sprung out of nowhere. I knew I wanted to design one more Christmas pattern…but I wasn’t sure what. 

Eventually I just started experimenting with how to make Christmas trees, and came up with the tree in this pattern. I started brainstorming what I could use it for…and that’s when I realized I could make a wall hanging!

My absolute favorite thing about this wall hanging is the fact that it is perfect for scrap yarn! Each element of the wall hanging only uses a small amount of yarn, making it great for using up scraps.

 Last thing before we get to the pattern: while you can easily use any yarn for this pattern, I used Red Heart Super Saver. This is like my “staple” yarn. It holds up great, and is perfect for decor like this! 

Christmas Wall Hanging

Materials:

•  Worsted weight yarn: I used Red Heart Super Saver
• Sport weight yarn (for star only): I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Glamour
• H/8 and G/4.25mm crochet hook
• Yarn Needle
• Sturdy stick about 2″ bigger than finished wall hanging

Finished Measurements:

Approximately 12” long and 10” wide

Notes

• Elements of wall hanging (i.e. tree, presents, etc.) are made separately and then sewn onto the background.
• All elements use the H/8 hook EXCEPT the star, which uses the G hook with thelighter weight yarn

Abbreviations/Stitches Used

Chain – ch

Slip Stitch – sl st

Single crochet – sc

Half Double Crochet – hdc

Double crochet – dc

Half Triple Crochet – htr

Repeat – rep

Round(s) – rnd(s)

Skip – sk

Stitch(es) – st(s)

RS: Right Side

Special Stitch

Half Double Crochet 2 Together (hdc2tog): YO, insert hook in indicated st, YO, pull up loop. Insert hook in next st, YO, pull up loop. YO, pull through last 4 loops on hook.

Instructions:

BACKGROUND

With white, Ch 35.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (34 sc)

Row 2-17: Ch 1 (does NOT count as st) sc in ea st across. On last sc change colors: drop white working yarn. YO, pull through last 2 loops of sc with tan color. Turn. (34 sc)

Row 18: (RS) Now working with tan, ch 1, *sc in next 3 sts. Hdc in next st, dc in next st, hdc innext st, sc in next 2 sts. Hdc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, htr in next st, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in nextst, sc in next 2 sts. Rep from * once more. Fasten off tan. DO NOT TURN.

Row 19: With RS facing, join blue on the right side of work with sl st. Ch 2 (counts as st), dc innext st. Hdc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 sts. Hdc in next st, sc in next5 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 5 sts. Hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 sts,hdc in next st. Sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next st, dc in last 2 sts.

Row 20-37: Ch 1, sc in ea st across. Turn. (34 sc)

Row 38: Ch 1 and sc in first st. *Ch 4, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc. Rep from * across row. Turn.

Row 39: Ch 1, sc in first sc and in next ch sp. *Ch 4, sc in next ch sp. Rep from * across all ch spaces. Turn.

Row 40 (worked around stick): NOTE: you may want to save this row for after all pieces have been sewn on the background. Ch 1, working around stick, sc in first sc. *Ch 4, working around stick, sc in next ch space. Rep from * across row. Turn.

HANGER: Ch 1, sl st over the closest sc on stick (see picture below). Ch 55, sl st to the sc over the stick on the opposite side.

Fasten off and weave in ends. 

TREE

Ch 2.

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook. Turn

Row 2: Ch 1 (does NOT count as st, here and throughout), 3 sc in next sc. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st. Sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (5 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in ea st across. Turn. (5 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st. Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in last st. Turn. (7 sc)

Row 6: Ch 1, sl st in next 3 sts. Ch 1, sc in next st, ch 1, sl st in last 3 sts. Turn. (1 sc)

Row 7: Ch 1, sl st in BL of next 3 sl st. Sl st in next ch 1. 3 sc in next sc. Sl st in BL of next sl st.Turn. (3 sc)

Row 8-10:Rep rows 3-5.

Row 11: Ch 1, sc in ea st across. (7 sc)

Row 12: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st. Sc in next 5 sc. 2 sc in last st. Turn. (9 sc)

Row 13: Ch 1, sc in ea st across. Turn. (9 sc)

Row 14: Ch 1, sl st in next 4 sts. Ch 1, sc in next st, ch 1, sl st in last 4 sts. Turn. (1 sc)

Row 15: Ch 1, sl st in BL of next 4 sl st. Sl st in next ch 1. 3 sc in next sc. Sl st in BL of next sl st.Turn. (3 sc).

Row 16-19: Rep rows 3-6.

Row 20-21: Rep rows 12-13.

Row 22: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st. Sc in next 7 sc. 2 sc in last st. Turn. (11 sc)

Row 23: Ch 1, sc in ea st across. Fasten Off.

STAR

With sport weight yarn and G hook, Ch 3 (does NOT count as st), 5 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. Join with sl st to beg hdc.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, *sc in next hdc. Ch 3, sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, sc in same sc. Rep from * for all hdc. Join with sl st to beg sc. Fasten off.

PRESENTS

Large Present (pink & purple)

Ch 8.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn.

Row 2-5: Ch 1 (does not count as st), sc in BL of ea sc across. Fasten Off. Turn rectangle so the Back loop ridges are vertical. Attach bow in the 3rd row.

Medium Present (yellow & orange)

Ch 6.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn.

Row 2-5: Ch 1 (does not count as st), sc in BL of ea sc across. Fasten Off. Turn rectangle so the Back loop ridges are vertical. Attach bow in the 3rd row.

Small Present (blue and yellow)

Ch 6.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. Turn.

Row 2-4: Ch 1 (does not count as st), sc in BL of ea sc across. Fasten Off. This time keep rectangle so the back loop ridges are horizontal. Attach bow in the 3rd stitch (the middle) of last row.

How to Attach bows: Make a sl st in the row or stitch that each present instructions indicates. Leave a starting tail and a finishing tail. Use these tails to tie a bow in a double knot.

FINISHING FOR ALL PIECES

Block finished items using steam blocking. This is super easy, and will prevent curling in the pieces. View my easy tutorial HERE.

Arrange pieces on the background, pin, and sew on. Then go back to the background and complete the last row (Row 40) to attach the stick/hanger.
