I love how creative we can get with crocheting. There’s patterns for so many different holidays!

As far as Valentine’s Day goes, there are endless possibilities for crochet hearts, valentine decor, and even accessories and garments!

In this post, I wanted to share over 15 of my favorite crochet valentine patterns.

What should I crochet for valentines day?

There are SO many different possibilities when it comes to crocheting Valentines Day items! Of course, crochet hearts are probably the most common. While I will include some heart patterns in this roundup, that is definitely not all.

Here is a quick overview of the types of patterns I’ve included:

Crochet Valentine Patterns – The List

Are you ready to see the free valentines patterns?! Let’s get into the list!

#1: Crochet Heart Garland

First up, check out this cute Heart Garland designed by Stitching Together. Wouldn’t this make adorable valentines decor?! I love the simplicity of these hearts…no difficult increases to make them. They’re literally rectangles made into hearts by the string in the banner!

#2: Candy Hearts Cup Cozy

The Candy Hearts Cup Cozy, a cute kitchen item, would be great to get into the valentines spirit! Just look at those tiny little hearts! They’re made in one simple round. Aren’t they cute?

#3: Belle Heart Crochet Coaster

Coasters are such a perfect home accent! The Belle Heart Coasters over on Crochet Kim are unique and beautiful. I love how these ones have hearts literally embedded into the coasters!

#4: Amore Shawl

Next up, meet the Amore Shawl! This shawl design features a lace stitch pattern resembling hearts! Make it in an ombre pink/purple color and you have the perfect shawl to wear out on a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner.

#5: Flower Heart Wreath

Next up, the Flower Heart Wreath! I think it’s awesome how this design features a heart wrapped in yarn, and then covered in roses. It includes the two iconic elements of Valentines Day, which makes it a great decoration item!

#6: Crochet Heart Applique

I have always loved how hearts look when different sizes are layered on top of each other. That’s why I designed a Heart Applique in 3 sizes! These hearts can easily be used as coasters, actual valentines, or layered together to form more complex hearts.

#7: Chocolate Smooch Crochet Pattern

Up next is this ADORABLE little Chocolate kiss crochet pattern by E’ Claire Makery! This project would work up ultra fast and it could easily be an addition to a valentine’s card or present. If you want to crochet some chocolates, I would check out this pattern right away.

#8: Crochet Valentine Amigurumi

Getting into the amigurumi category…I just had to include these adorable Valentine’s Themed Animals! The pattern includes instructions for a bear, panda, and koala. My heart just melted when I saw these. They will take a bit more time to crochet but are totally worth it!

#9: Mini Amigurumi Crochet Hearts

Do these Amigurumi Hearts look familiar? They can either go in the arms of those cute animals, or be used totally separate! You’ll just need some small amounts of worsted weight yarn to get started on some for yourself (or your kids!)

#10: Bella Rosa Shawl

Another shawl pattern but this time features a rose! The Bella Rosa Shawl, designed by Wilmade, is absolutely gorgeous. It uses the filet crochet technique along with a soft pink yarn. I can definitely see this design draped over my shoulders!

#11: Crochet Heart Valentine Cards

One of the ways I put my heart applique pattern to good use was by making a card out of it! Check out this DIY Crochet Valentine Card to learn how to attach a crocheted heart to a card to make it an extra special handmade valentine. I include a tutorial to help you make the paper cards as well!

#12: Amigurumi Crochet Bunny Pattern

We’ve seen a lot of hearts and roses so far but what about a bunny? My goodness, when I saw this Amigurumi crochet bunny from Crochet 365 Knit Too, I just had to include it. It features worsted weight yarn and an adorable little rose necklace, which makes it extra perfect for Valentines Day!

#13: Heart Motifs

Looking for a large crochet heart? This Motif Pattern by Meladora’s Creations might be perfect! These are shaped a bit differently than my heart applique. They are made from simple single crochet, along with decreases. Make one, or a whole bunch to decorate the house with!

#14: Parisienne Beret

Getting into the heart-themed fashion…here is a simple but stylish beret by Sewrella! The Parisienne Beret is pretty easy to crochet, and then the heart is sewn on afterward using the Cross Stitch. No color work knowledge required!

#15: Crochet Valentine Heart Blanket

One great way to be wrapped in lots of love during Valentines Day is by crocheting a Heart Blanket! This pattern is designed by The Blue Elephants, and it is made entirely from corner-to-corner crochet. Try making the heart in red as pictured, or change it up with pink or purple!

#16: Crochet Heart Granny Square

If you want to make a blanket out of square instead, you will definitely want to see the Heart Granny Square! Look at how beautiful this is! You’ll start by crocheting a cute heart in the center, and then doing traditional granny square stitches around it. I might just need to make one of these myself!

#17: Valentines Tissue Box Cover

When I saw this tissue box cover, I fell in love! It is so adorable, and sure to stand out amongest other valentines day decor! The crocheted cover includes 3 cute tiny hearts, along with a crocheted envelope. Make in red, pink, or purple to customize!

#18: Love Notes Crochet Valentine

Want a cute little book for your kids to make their own valentines? Enter the Love Notes Crochet Pattern! I think this is such a sweet idea. There are little pockets for paper and crayons, plus a cute heart button for closure. I can’t stand how cute it is!

#19: Valentines Crochet Countdown

Do you REALLY get into valentines day? Or, do your kids look forward to it every year? If so, I bet you will love this Valentines Day Countdown pattern! Just look at how amazing this is! The back is made from c2c crochet, and then 14 pockets are added on afterward.

#20: Cabled Baby Heart Hat

Last but not least, check out the Cabled Heart Hat for Babies! If you want to dress up your little one for valentines day, this pattern is so perfect. I can just imagine how cute it would look!

You just can’t have Valentine’s Day without a homemade card…am I right? This week I started making these easy DIY cards that incorporate an adorable tiny crochet heart on the front!

Personally, I love anything that has to do with cardmaking. Whether it’s a simple paper card, or something more complex with crocheting, or a foiling project like this!

For this card design in particular, I made 2 different types of cards, but the basic idea for them is the same. And you can totally customize these to make them EXACTLY your style!

All right, let’s get to the tutorial for these cards!

How to Make DIY Valentines (with crochet hearts!)

Materials:

• Mini Crocheted Hearts—click HERE for the pattern to make these (they’re super quick & easy!)
• Embroidery thread MATCHING the color yarn you use for your hearts
• A sharp needle with a big enough eye to fit the embroidery thread through
• Card Stock Paper—this is for the main “body” of the card. You can use simple card stock like I did in one card, or decorative card stock (like the red polka dot paper). You can find paper like this at any craft stores like Joann or Michaels!
• Plain White Printer Paper—we’ll use this for layering some other elements
• Scrapbook tape (or regular double sided sticky tape)
• A Scrapbook cutter (or scissors, a pencil and ruler)
• Various Scrapbook punches (if desired)—these can also be found at your local Joann or Michaels!

Note: You can make your cards however big or small you want. You can customize them however you want too. But I will show you exactly how I made mine!

Step 1

Cut out a piece of card stock paper that is 8.5″ by 5.25″.

Step 2

Fold the paper in half. The body of your card is made!

Step 3

Now cut out the white printer paper to a size smaller than the front of the card. In my polka dot card, I cut the paper to 4″ by 2.5″. In the light pink card, I cut the paper to 4.5″ by 3″.

Step 4

Now we will sew our crochet hearts to the printer paper!

First, thread a needle with your embroidery floss. Tie a large knot close to the end of the thread.

Next, position your heart on the cutout paper. When you have it laid how you want it, pull the needle through from back to front. Make sure the knot is on the backside of the paper.

Step 5

Continue to sew around the entire outside edge of the heart, until you get back where you started. Helpful tip: when sewing on the right side of the heart, make your “stitches” super tiny so the embroidery thread doesn’t show through too much.

The stitches on the backside can be bigger, though! (See picture).

Finish by knotting your working thread to the original knotted end. Trim ends.

Step 6

Attach the paper with the heart to the main body of the card using scrapbook tape (or regular double sided sticky tape would work fine too. I would advise against using glue because it will leave the paper extra wrinkled.)

To avoid wrinkles with the tape, put it around the outside of the paper, and maybe a bit in the center. Don’t put any on the stitches of the heart.

Then smooth the paper carefully onto the card stock!

Step 7

Attach any extra embellishments if desired.

For my polka dot card, I simply used a scrapbook punch to make a lace-like cutout, and then I glued it on.

For my light pink card, I layered some other purple paper along with some more white paper with “Happy Valentine’s Day” printed on it.

After layering these together, I simply attached it to the card with more scrapbook tape! (Don’t forget to grab your free printable here).

I think my favorite thing about these cute crochet hearts is that you can layer them different ways to create different effects!

They are also great for decoration. You could use the large heart as a coaster, or string them all together to make a garland! (Scroll to the bottom for more info on how I did that)

Crochet Heart Applique – Free Pattern

• Pin this pattern to your Pinterest Boards

Notes:

1. Hearts are worked flat. Turn at the end of each row, unless it is noted to turn sooner.
2. When turning, ch 3 counts as double crochet
3. When turning with a ch 1, the ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch.
4. With the exception of the tiny hearts, all the hearts are made by starting out at a point and then increasing along the edges. Then, each side of the top of the heart will be made separately and decreased to form the round top edges.

Materials:

• Mary Maxim Woodlands yarn (or any other worsted weight yarn)
• H/8 crochet hook
• Yarn needle

Finished Measurements (from top to bottom):

Large Heart: 4.5” tall

Medium Heart: 3” tall

Small Heart: 1.5” tall

Note on sizing: you can easily change up the yarn weight you use to get larger or smaller hearts! Like I said, I used all worsted weight, but you could try sport if you wanted smaller hearts, or bulky yarn if you wanted larger hearts. There is lots of room for experimenting!

Abbreviations/Stitches Used:

Chain – ch

Slip Stitch: sl st

Single crochet – sc

Half double crochet – hdc

Double crochet – dc

Repeat – rep

Skip – sk

Stitch(es) – st(s)

RS: right side

WS: wrong side

Special Stitches:

Double Crochet 2 stitches together (dc2tog): YO, insert hook in next st and pull up lp. Insert hook in next st and pull up lp. YO, pull through 2 lps on hook, YO and pull through last 3 lps on hook.

Single Crochet 2 stitches together (sc2tog): (insert hook in next st and pull up lp) twice. YO, pull through all 3 lps on hook.

Crochet Heart Written Instructions:

LARGE Crochet HEART

Let’s start off with the largest crochet heart, which measures about 4.5″ tall. The size of this heart would work great for a coaster (or just decoration in general too!)

Row 1 (Right Side): ch 4, 4 dc in 4th ch from hook. (5 dc)

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc (2 increases made). Dc in next 3 dc. 3 dc in last dc. (9 dc)

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in first dc (1 increase made). Dc in next 7 dc. 2 dc in last dc. (11 dc)

Row 4: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc (2 increases made). Dc in next 9 dc. 3 dc in last dc. (15 dc)

Row 5: Ch 3, dc in first dc (1 increase made). Dc in next 13 dc. 2 dc in last dc. (17 dc)

Row 6: Ch 3, 2 dc in first dc (2 increases made). Dc in next 15 dc. 3 dc in last dc (21 dc)

You are now working the right side of the top of the heart.

Row 1: Ch 3, dc in next dc (NO increase made). Dc in next 9 dc. Leaving the rest of the row unfinished, TURN.

Row 2: Ch 1, (dc2tog over next 2 sts, dc in next dc) 3 times. Dc2tog over last 2 sts, TURN.

Row 3: Ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st. Sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog. Sl st in same st as last sc2tog. Fasten Off.

You are now working the left side of the top of the heart.

Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn with a sl st in the row before: the last stitch of row 1, on the right side of the heart. (Join at the base of the stitch, so that now there will be 2 sts in the middle). Ch 3, dc in next 10 dc. TURN. (You should now have 22 dc across the whole row, with 2 dc in the center stitch.)

Row 2: repeat row 2 of right side.

Row 3: repeat row 3 of right side. Fasten Off and weave in ends.

MEDIUM Crochet HEART

Next up, the medium sized crochet heart!

Row 1 (Right side): Ch 4, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook.

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first dc (1 increase made), dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. (5 dc)

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in first dc (1 increase made), dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in last st. (7 dc)

Row 4: Ch 3, dc in first dc (1 increase made), dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in last st. (9 dc)

You are now working the right side of the top of the heart.

Row 1: Ch 3, dc in first dc (1 increase made). Dc2tog, dc in next 2 dc. Leaving the rest of the row unfinished, TURN.

Row 2: Ch 3, (dc2tog) twice. Fasten Off.

You are now working the left side of the top of the heart.

Row 1: With RS facing, join yarn with a sl st in the row before: the last stitch of row 1, on the right side of the heart. (Join at the base of the stitch, so that now there will be 2 sts in the middle). Ch 3, dc in next dc. Dc2tog, 2 dc in last st. TURN. You should now have 10 sts across the whole row, with 2 dc in the center stitch.

Row 2: Ch 1, (dc2tog) twice. Ch 3, sl st to turning ch from previous row (counts as a dc; serves the purpose of a “backwards” turning ch). Fasten Off and weave in ends.

Tiny Crochet Heart

I must admit, these tiny hearts are my favorite of all of them! At 1.5″ tall, they’re just too cute. These work great as an embellishment sewn onto a sweater, slipped inside a valentine card, etc.

Row 1: Ch 4, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook.

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in first dc (1 increase made), dc in next dc, 2 dc in last dc. (5 dc)

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in first dc (1 increase made), hdc and sc in next st. Sl st in next st. Sc and hdc in next st. Dc in last st—the turning ch. Ch 3, sl st to same turning ch (this counts as a dc; it serves the purpose of a “backwards” turning ch). Fasten Off and weave in ends.

Using Your Hearts

So now you’ve finished making your crochet hearts – great job! There are a variety of ways you can put them to use:

1. Crochet Heart Coaster

One great way to put the large heart to use is by making it a coaster! The large heart is the perfect size for this. You can make one for your own nightstand, or make a set for a special someone for Valentines day!

2. Crochet Heart Garland

If you’re up for making a LOT of hearts, one thing you can do with them is string them together to form a garland. You can get extra creative with this pattern because of the layering – sew tiny hearts on top of large & medium hearts for a beautiful look!

Here’s an example of how I made my hearts into a garland:

3. Crochet Valentines

Last but not least, you can easily slip one of your new crocheted hearts into a valentine card to make it extra specal, or even embroider a message on it and make IT the valentine card.

Conclusion

Crocheted hearts are such a fun project for crocheters of all skill levels. There are a variety of ways to crochet a heart applique, but this pattern is unique because it is worked in simple back and forth rows. It is beginner-friendly and will hopefully make for an extra special Valentines Day celebration.
