I have so many fun memories from Easter as a kid. All my extended family used to gather for an Easter egg hunt at my great-grandparents’ house.

Those were the days. Now my great grandparents have passed away, but I will always remember the fun of the year egg hunt.

To commemorate that, I decided to design this crochet Easter basket! (Oh, and don’t forget to check out the matching egg pattern too!)

A Large & Mini Crochet Easter Basket

The pattern for today comes in 2 different sizes: mini and large/regular!

The mini crochet Easter basket measures just 3.75″ in diameter and 3″ tall. This one wouldn’t work for an egg hunt, but it does make a great decoration.

The larger basket, on the other hand, is 7″ in diameter and 4″ tall: the perfect egg hunting size!

Explanation: Celebrate Easter this year with a cute handmade Easter basket! This pattern features a simple base and festive puff stitches for a fun look. Best of all, it comes in a mini size for decorating, and a large size for egg hunting! 

Materials:

• Lion Brand Basic Stitch Yarn (100% Acrylic, 185 yds / 170 m, 3.5 oz / 100 g) 1 skein Sage, Deco Rose, and Taupe Heather (or colors of choice. 1 skein of each will make 1 mini basket and 1 regular sized basket).
• Or any other worsted weight yarn 
• G/4mm crochet hook 
• Yarn needle

Notes:

1. Starting ch 1 at the beginning of rnds never counts as a single crochet OR half double crochet.
2. Basket is worked from the bottom up, with the strap done last (all in one piece).
3. Basket is worked in joined rounds. 

Measurements/Sizing: 

Measurements taken with basket sitting up as shown in photos

Mini basket: 3.75” diameter, 3” tall 

Regular basket: 7” diameter, 4” tall

Gauge: 

First 4 rnds of basket = 1.5” radius (see photo)

Measure gauge just to make sure you’re on the right track with sizing. It does not have to be exact. Finished measurements may vary a little bit anyway depending on how much you flatten the bottom.

Crochet Easter Basket Instructions:

Mini Size

Ch 3 (does NOT count as a st).

Rnd 1: 8 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. Join with a sl st to first hdc (not ch). (8 hdc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (16 hdc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, (hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st) 8x. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (24 hdc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, (hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st) 8x. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (32 hdc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, (hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st) 8x. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (40 hdc)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (40 hdc)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st. (Sk 1 st, 2 sc in next st) 19x. Sk last st, join with a sl st to first sc. (40 sc)

Rnd 8: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (40 hdc)

Rnds 9-10: Rep rnds 7-8. At the end of rnd 10, drop green to use later (do not fasten off).

Rnd 11: Join brown with a sc in first st. Sc in same st. (Sk 1 st, 2 sc in next st) until 1 st is left. Sk last st, join with a sl st to first sc. Fasten off brown. (40 sc) 

Rnd 12: Join pink with a sl st in first st. Ch 2, puff st in same st. (Ch 1, sk next st, puff st in next st) until 1 st is left. Ch 1, sk last st, sl st in first puff st. Fasten off pink. (20 puff sts)

Rnd 13: Insert hook into the working green loop that we dropped earlier. Ch 4 (or as many chs as it takes to reach the starting point of this round comfortably). Make 2 sc into closest ch-sp. 2 sc in next ch-sp and in all ch-sps around. Join with a sl st to first sc. (40 sc)

Do not fasten off.

STRAP/HANDLE:

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in next 4 sts of the basket. End the row here and TURN. (4 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. (4 sc)

Rows 3-35: Rep row 2. 

Note: You can also repeat row 2 until the strap reaches your desired length.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Leaving 16 sc in between each side of the strap, sew the loose end of the strap to the other side of the basket. I used the whipstitch.

Regular Size

Rep rnds 1-5 of mini basket.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, (hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st) 8x. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (48 hdc)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, (hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st) 8x. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (56 hdc)

Rnd 8: Ch 1, (hdc in next 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st) 8x. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (64 hdc)

Rnd 9: Ch 1, (hdc in next 7 sts, 2 hdc in next st) 8x. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (72 hdc)

Rnd 10: Ch 1, (hdc in next 8 sts, 2 hdc in next st) 8x. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (80 hdc)

Rnd 11: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (80 hdc)

Rnd 12: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st. (Sk 1 st, 2 sc in next st) until 1 st is left. Sk last st, join with a sl st to first sc. (80 sc)

Rnd 13: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st to first hdc. (80 hdc)

Rnds 14-17: Rep rnds 11-12 twice. At the end of rnd 17, drop green to use later (do not fasten off).

Rnd 18: Rep round 11 of mini basket. (80 sc) 

Rnd 19: Rep round 12 of mini basket. (40 puff sts)

Rnd 20: Rep round 13 of mini basket. (80 sc)

Do not fasten off.

STRAP/HANDLE:

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in next 6 sts of the basket. End the row here and TURN. (6 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across. (6 sc)

Rows 3-53: Rep row 2. 

Note: You can also repeat row 2 until the strap reaches your desired length.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Leaving 34 sc in between each side of the strap, sew the loose end of the strap to the other side of the basket. I used the whipstitch.

Finishing:

• Weave in all ends securely. 
• Fill with easter grass and enjoy!

Easter Basket Crochet Tutorial

If you need a little visual help with making this basket, I’ve got you covered! Here are some photos to illustrate the more tricky parts of the pattern.

1. Starting the Puff Stitch Round

Here is what it looks like to start the puff stitch round and then continue. You’ll start with a slip stitch, a chain 2, and then a puff stitch in the same stitch as the original slip stitch.

2. Joining the green for the last round

On the last round, we pick up the green loop that we dropped before doing the brown & pink rounds!

While you could fasten off the green and then join it again, I’m all for less ends to weave in. So here’s what to do instead.

Pick up the green loop, then chain 4 (see first photo).

Find the nearest ch-sp and make 2 sc into it (see second photo). Now you’ve successfully joined the green again and you can keep working around!

3. Sewing the Strap

Here’s what it looks like to line the strap up with the other side of the basket, and begin whipstitching:

Here are a few more related questions about crocheting an Easter basket that you might be curious about!

How do I make my Easter basket hold its shape?

Crochet baskets can be finicky about holding their shape. As far as this pattern goes, the mini basket holds its shape pretty well, but the larger basket can benefit from extra sturdiness!

To stiffen your crochet Easter basket, the best option is usually plastic canvas. It doesn’t have the best aesthetic, but it definitely does make the basket hold its shape.

Can you crochet a basket with acrylic yarn?

Yes, you can definitely crochet baskets with acrylic yarn! Acrylic is easy to care for, and stands up well to use. While cotton works well too, there is nothing wrong with using acrylic! I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch in this pattern.

Can I make a different type of handle for this Easter basket?

Yes, if you prefer to have a stiff handle, you can use a different type of basket handle!

One option is to work the handle separate from the basket, and work a double layer, putting plastic canvas inside.

Another option is to use a sturdy cord or piping wrapped in yarn and then attached.

What else can I crochet for Easter?

There are lots of options when it comes to crochet Easter decor! I mentioned my egg pattern earlier, but I also have a Bunny Pillow Pattern and a master list of Easter patterns.

The cross basket pattern was born after I designed a simple cross applique a few weeks ago. I had made these lovely crosses, and then I thought, “how can I use these?”

That night, I grabbed some bulky weight yarn and whipped up this cute little basket. I hope you love it!

A Mini Easter Basket Pattern

At around 5″ in diameter, I would classify this pattern as a mini Easter basket. Personally, I’m going to use it for decor around the house. However, I think you could also make it work with a handle if you wanted to use it for a little one collecting Easter eggs!

Cross:

With worsted weight yarn and smaller hook, fsc 11.

Row 1: Sl st in the “ch” of last fsc. Sl st in next 4 sts. Ch 5, sc in second ch from hook and next 3 ch. Sl st in middle of cross. Ch 5, sc in second ch from hook and next 3 ch. Sl st in middle of cross. Sl st down the “ch” side of the fsc row.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Finishing:

1. If desired, steam block the cross to prevent any curling.

A Small Crochet Cross Pattern (Tiny, in Fact!)

This pattern all started with the small cross. I was actually sitting in my local college group and crocheting during the sermon…it helps me focus, LOL.

Anyway, I have wanted to come up with cross crochet patterns for awhile, and since Easter was coming up, I knew I needed to get to work.

As I sat and listened to the word of God, I used fingering weight yarn to make the teensy tiny cross you see here!

Of course, when I got home, I realized I could easily make the cross larger simply by changing my yarn weight.

I first tried worsted weight, then bulky, and what emerged was a cross applique easily made in 3 sizes!

This crochet cross is quick & easy to make!

If you want to crochet a cross is less than 10 minutes, this is the pattern for you.

The 3 different sized crosses are made larger simply by using heavier weight yarn and adding a few stitches, so even the large cross works up quickly!

Maybe you’ve been wondering how to crochet a simple cross. If so, look no further. This pattern is so easy to make!

There are a few things about it that can be tricky to conceptualize through the written pattern, but once you get the hang of it, making them is a breeze.

Making Use of Your Crochet Cross Applique

Now, flat crochet crosses are cool and everything…but how can you make use of them?

Some people use crosses as a Bible bookmark, but to be honest, this cross may not work the best for that.

Instead, you can sew it as an applique to any of your favorite things…

• the tiny cross might look cool sewn on a sweater!
• you could try crocheting several crosses and stringing them onto a banner for Easter decor

• Small cross: #1 fingering weight yarn, F/4.25mm crochet hook
• Medium cross: #4 worsted weight yarn, H/5mm crochet hook

1. The different sized crosses are all worked in the same way, but with different yarns AND a few added stitches (more info in the pattern).

It is funny how inspiration usually strikes me ALL at once.

I’ve been wanting to design some Christ-centered Easter crochet patterns for awhile, but I didn’t really have any ideas…

Until one day, everything hit me at once! And within 2 days, I had designed 3 patterns exactly as I described above.

(The other two are coming out soon – make sure to keep an eye out!)

But for now, meet the Crochet Easter Cross Wall Hanging!

A Tapestry Crochet Wall Hanging

The cross portion of this wall hanging uses one specific technique: tapestry crochet/intarsia crochet.

If you’re new to changing colors in crochet, don’t worry. This is the perfect beginner’s color work pattern, because you only have to have 2 colors going at once – the white background and the brown cross.

The flowers are made separately and sewn on afterward!

That verse above describes the GOSPEL perfectly. My Christian faith is an integral part to my life, so it is inevitable that I will also design patterns centered around that.

I believe we should incorporate Christ into everything we do. Whether that means sharing the gospel in your workplace, doing bible crafts with your kids, or crocheting Christian items!

For other Christian women out there, my hope and prayer is that this is exactly the Christ-centered Easter crochet decor that you need.

When it comes to crochet crosses in particular, I have personally found that they tend to look a little old and outdated.

So, I hope you find this to be a more modern crochet cross idea this Easter!

Fringe or No Fringe?

It took me a LONG time to decide whether I wanted to add fringe to this wall hanging or not!

I liked it both ways, but my followers over on Instagram voted that fringe was the way to go. The pictures above show it finished with fringe, but I thought I would include another photo WITHOUT fringe so you can see ahead of time what it looks like.

Materials:

• Mary Maxim Woodlands Worsted Weight Yarn: (90% Acrylic, 10% Alpaca, 200 yds/182 m, 3.5 oz/100 g) 1 skein Ecru (MC) and 1 skein Beige Heather (CC) 
• Small amounts of worsted weight yarn in pink and yellow for flowers (or your desired colors)
• H/5mm crochet hook

• Large stick a few inches longer than the finished wall hanging – you can use something like a dowel rod available at craft stores, but a clean stick from the yard will look more rustic!

Notes:

1. Ch 1 at beginning of row does NOT count as a stitch.
2. Always change colors by yarning over with the NEW color on the last stitch of the current color. 
3. You can do the color work using your desired method, but I carried the white throughout the cross. NEXT STEP: 

Do not fasten off. Steam block your wall hanging to get rid of any curling. I recommend doing this before the next row where we attach it to the stick – so that the stick doesn’t get wet from the steam. Here’s what mine looked like pinned out ready to block.

After blocking is finished, pick up your loop again to start Row 54, where we will attach the wall hanging to the stick.

Row 54: Ch 3. Insert hook into next ch-5 sp. We are now going to create a sc over the stick. Place the stick over on top of your hook, and bring the yarn over the stick. Yarn over.

Pull up a loop, just as if you were making a regular sc. YO, pull through 2 loops to finish your first sc around the stick. Ch 5.

Repeat the same exact process in each ch-5 loop.

From the front, you won’t be able to see the ch-5 sp. Fasten off when you get to the end of the ch-5 sps.

Handle:

Make a slip knot. Make another single crochet through the ch-5 sp on the right side and around the stick. It is important that you actually join NEW yarn here. This will prevent the netting from pulling toward the center.

Chain 65 (or whatever amount of chains you want for your handle). Make another sc through the ch-5 on the left side and around the stick. Fasten off.

Flowers

Large Rose:

Ch 7. Make 3 sc in the second ch from hook. 3 sc in each ch across. Allow the stitches to twist naturally into a flower. (18 sc)

To finish, sl st to the side of the flower where the ending stitch lines up. Fasten off.

Small Rose:

Ch 5. Make 3 sc in the second ch from hook. 3 sc in each ch across. Allow the stitches to twist naturally into a flower. (12 sc)

To finish, sl st to the side of the flower where the ending stitch lines up. Fasten off.

Daisy:

Ch 6. Sl st in 6th ch from hook. (Ch 5, sl st in same ch) 4 times. Fasten off.

You can make as many or as few of the above flowers as you would like. I attached 2 daisies, 2 small roses, and 1 large rose on the left of the cross. And 1 daisy, 2 small roses, and one large rose on the right side.

Finishing:

1. Weave in all ends.
2. Attach flowers on the left and right side of cross. Just arrange the flowers according to the photo below (or however you would like) then sew down securely.
3. Add fringe to the bottom if desired. My fringe was 11” long and I used 2 strands of yarn for each set (once folded in half for the fringe it looks like 4 strands per set, and the measurement will be half of the original 11” measurement). I love this pillow because it can be a cute decoration for your house, OR a snuggle companion for your kids! The velvet yarn makes it sooo soft and cuddly.

I know the velvet yarn debate is huge…but personally, I love it for things like this. It gives this pillow a fabric effect. From a distance, you can’t tell it’s crocheted!

FINISHING

Step 1: Embroidering the eyes. Feel free to eyeball it if you’d like. However, I’ll tell you exactly where I placed my eyes:

Count approximately 12 sts from the side of head for the edge of the eye, and 13 rows from top of head. Place 8 sts between the span of one eye. And finally, leave 15 sts in between the two eyes.

Step 2: Attach the Nose. I placed mine 11 rows up from the bottom of head.

Step 3: Stuff your head! Then, sew the top closed. I used a whipstitch seam.

Step 4: Use a thin layer of stuffing to line the ears. You don’t want them to be too puffy, but you also don’t want them to flop too much.

Step 5: Sew the bottom of the ears closed.

Step 6: Sew the ears on the head! Place the ears at the back of the pillow to sew on. You want to sew them a few rows down to give them a bit more support to stand up. (They will still be somewhat floppy, but not as much if you attach them well.)

Weave in all ends—you’re done!

Make a whole bunch for the kids to hunt, or for decoration around the house!

The following tutorial will be in two sections: the pattern to make a single-color egg, and then instructions for how to make stripes. The stripes are not too difficult an addition! I encourage you to try it!

I designed these eggs to be made in worsted weight yarn, but you can also experiment with different weights. If you want to make them just like mine, I used Red Heart Super Saver, which is a great price for the amount of yardage you get.

How to make a single-color egg

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn, stuffing, H/8 hook, scissors, stitch marker (scrap yarn will do fine), and a yarn needle.

Notes:

Egg is worked continuously without turning. Do not join at the end of a round unless otherwise specified.

You will want to place a stitch marker in the last stitch of the first rnd, and then move it up with every round so you do not lose your place in the work.

Instructions:

Ch 2, 7 sc in second ch from hook. Place marker.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in ea sc (14 sc).

Rnd 3: Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st (21 sc).

By the end of Rnd 3, your work should look something like this:

Rnd 4-8: sc in ea st around (21 sc).

By now your work should have curved upward into a bowl shape!

Now take some stuffing and begin filling the bottom of the egg. Not so much that it interferes with your work, but enough that you won’t have to shove a bunch down to the bottom at the end.

Every other of the following rnds, continue adding stuffing a little at a time.

Rnd 9: *Sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc. Sc2tog, sc in next st. Rep from * around (15 sts).

Rnd 10-11 sc in every sc around (15 sts).

Rnd 12: *Sc2tog in next st, sc in next st. Rep from * around (10 sts).

Rnd 13: (sc2tog) 5 times (5 sts). Make sure your egg is stuffed exactly how you want it, then fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Finishing:

Thread a yarn needle with the ending tail of your work. Weave through all the stitches and pull to secure.

Weave in ends!

How to Add Stripes to Your Egg

Now I will show you how to add stripes to your egg! These make the eggs extra colorful and fun.

Before you begin with stripes, identify where on your egg you want them to be. For this tutorial, I will show you how I did them on rnds 7 and 9. However, you can do them anywhere you want!

Step 1: On the last stitch of Rnd 6, do not finish the sc. YO, pull up a lp as shown below.

Step 2: Take the end of a new color. Complete that sc now with the new color as follows: YO with new color, pull through 2 lps of previous color.

Step 3: Continue with the new color for rnd 7 (follow instructions for the single color egg). When you have completed this rnd you will have finished your first stripe.

Step 4: When you get to the last sc of rnd 7, repeat Step 1 and 2 to join the new color. There is just one difference now. Instead of having a new working yarn, you will pick up the yarn from 2 rnds below.

This is illustrated in the following photo. As you can see I have picked up the teal yarn from the previous rnd and left the yellow one. Note that you do not even need to fasten off—just leave it hanging. Continue working rnd 8 with the original color (teal in my case).

Step 5: Repeat Step 4, except this time use the new color (yellow in my case) again. Continue working rnd 9 with this color.

Step 6: Join your original color in one more time, and finish the egg as usual.

Here is a picture of the egg inside out. As you can see, we have added only two extra ends by doing the stripes—one at the start, and one at the end. What to do with them? You can weave them in. Or, you can also tie them in a knot and just stick them inside the egg with the stuffing. This is what I do, as it saves time. (see next series of pictures).

Below you can also see stripes that I put on a different place on the eggs. For the egg on the right, I did the stripes on rnd 5 and 8.
