How to Crochet a Gnome

Gnome patterns range in difficulty from easy to advanced (you’ll find both in this list).

Generally, gnome are crocheted in the amigurumi style—by making a variety of parts and pieces, stuffing them, and sewing them together.

Depending on the intricacy, you could have as little to make as a hat, body, nose, arms and legs…

Or you could have lots of other little details to make to add to the “character” of the gnome.

I know it can sound a little overwhelming to crochet a gnome. But just take it one part at a time and make sure to keep all the parts in the same place for when you’re ready to assemble!

Looking for the perfect crochet dinosaur patterns? Dinosaur stuffed animals make for the perfect baby-boy gift, and there are so many unique patterns out there! Whether you’re looking for an amigurumi dinosaur pattern, or a crochet dino hat/blanket, I’ve got you covered. I’m excited to share these amazing dinosaur patterns with you today!

Free Dinosaur Crochet Patterns

There are lots of great dinosaur patterns out there that are also FREE. I will show you quite a few of those today.

However, there are also some paid dino patterns that are so cute I couldn’t resist putting them in as well. I will specify if one of the patterns is paid only (and keep in mind that paid patterns are often more complex, and they’re perfect for printing!)

There will also be a variety of different kinds of dinosaurs—triceratops, brontosaurus, a dinosaur with a hatchling, and lots more!

If you are a dino lover (or if you know someone who is) you’re sure to find a great pattern here.

How do you crochet a dinosaur?

The most common way to crochet a dinosaur is in the amigurumi style: by crocheting the different parts of a dinosaur, stuffing them, and sewing them together. You can create a variety of adorble dinosaur plushies this way.

However, there are other ways to create dinosaurs as well. You can use tapestry or intarsia crochet to make a flat colorwork dinosaur, like a blanket. Using corner-to-corner crochet is another option.

And finally, you can incorporate elements of a dinosaur into a wearable item—like a hat with dinosaur spikes on it!

What yarn is best for crochet dinosaurs?

The yarn you should use for your dinosaur will depend on the pattern.

For amigurumi, usually a common worsted weight yarn will work well, like red heart super saver, I Love This Yarn, etc.

But that is definitely not your only option. Some of my favorite crochet dinosaurs have been ones made with velvet yarn. They are so soft and cuddly! Bernat Blanket also works great if you want to make a large crochet dinosaur.

All in all though, make sure to always look at the recommendations in the pattern before making any decisions.

Other Supplies

Besides yarn, you’ll also need a crochet hook, scissors, yarn needles, and other similar notions.

If you are wanting to make an amigurumi dinosaur keep in mind you will probably need to buy safety eyes and polyfill stuffing to complete it.

Techniques You’ll Need to Know

Every crochet dinosaur may require a slightly different set of crochet stitches/techniques, but here are some basics you will likely need to know:

Basic stitches like the slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, or double crochet (single crochet will be the main stitch to know for amigurumi dinos)
Amigurumi Techniques like the invisible decrease or invisible color change

How do you crochet an owl?

There are a variety of ways to crochet an owl; it depends on what final result you are looking for! Some owls are made in the amigurumi style, by making a body, wings, eyes, etc. and sewing them all together.

Elephants have always had a special place in my heart since they are my mom’s favorite animal. Growing up she had a collection of ceramic and glass elephants that I would love looking at.

So this elephant crochet pattern is a tribute to her—she loves the final design and I hope you do too!!

Large crochet Elephant Pattern

This crocheted elephant is a good size stuffed animal, at 8-9″ in height (unlike some of the other elephant patterns out there which result in tiny elephants).

It is made in the amigurumi style, with all the body parts made separately, stuffed, and then sewn together.

I used DK weight yarn but you can use worsted or even chunky yarn if you want an even larger elephant!

Amigurumi Crochet Elephant Pattern

Without further ado, let’s start making this cute amigurumi elephant plush for your stuffed animal collection!

Explanation: An adorable amigurumi project to make: Meet Elsie the Elephant! Elsie can be made from DK or worsted weight yarn, and she would make the perfect plushie for a little girl or boy in your life!

Materials:

DK weight yarn: approx. 100 grams in light gray, and 25 grams in dark gray
3.5mm crochet hook
You can also try using worsted weight yarn & a 4 or 4.5mm hook, but the plushie size will vary depending on your tension.
12-mm black safety eyes (or embroider eyes for children under 3)
Fiber Filling
Yarn needle & stitch marker

Gauge and Tension:

Exact gauge is not critical for this pattern. Keep tension normal—do not work with a loose tension. You can always adjust your hook size if need be. For example, if you crochet loosely and you find the amigurumi is looking holey, go down a hook size.

Notes:

All body parts are crocheted separately and then sewn together according to the finishing instructions.
All parts are made in continuous rounds. Do not join at the end of each round unless otherwise specified.
Turning chain does not count as a stitch.
Place a stitch marker at the end of each round and move it up as you go.

When I was thinking about designing a crochet whale, I wanted something somewhat realistic but also super cute.

For this reason, Walter has a realistic body shape but a cartoony face. (What I was trying to avoid was how some amigurumi whales that are just a rounder circle).

Explanation: Meet Kaley the Koala, an adorable amigurumi stuffed animal! Kaley can be made from DK or worsted weight yarn, using standard color changing techniques. She would make the perfect gift!

DK weight yarn: approx.100 grams in gray, and less than 25 grams in black and white
3.5mm crochet hook
You can also try using worsted weight yarn & a 4 or 4.5mm hook, but the plushie size will vary depending on your tension.
12-mm black safety eyes (or embroider the eyes for children under 3)

I think this pattern would work great making a large panda if you used a chunky yarn like Bernat Blanket! It would make the panda softer and fluffier too.

I’ve always loved penguins—they’re such a cool animal!

For this free pattern, I wanted to create something that was cute and cuddly, while also being somewhat realistic.

This penguin is made in the amigurumi style, with all the body parts made separately, stuffed, and then sewn together. The detail in the penguin is mostly done using colorwork, so make sure you know how to change colors in amigurumi! (I’ll also show a video on this farther down.
