Pumpkin Design & Structure

It is my first Fall in my new home with my new husband (which is amazing) but that also means I have NO Fall decorations! So I figured it was time to design my first little pumpkins.

When I say these pumpkins work up fast, I’m not kidding. The tiny ones take like 5 minutes, and the larger ones 10-15.

I didn’t want them to look exactly like your standard crochet pumpkin, so I added the design element of some mini puff stitches. I really like how the texture came out using these! (I hope you do too).

To make the pumpkins, we’ll basically just work in the round, first increasing, then working some straight rounds, and then decreasing. We’ll add some ridges at the end as a finishing touch, along with a stem. Easy peasy!

Mini Crochet Pumpkins – Free Pattern

Fall is upon us! Kick off the season with this super easy crochet pumpkin keychain pattern. You will love how quickly these little pumpkins work up!

Materials: 

• Red Heart Super Saver (100% Acrylic, 364 yds / 333 m, 7 oz / 198 g) small amounts in Carrot and Buff
• Feel free to use any worsted weight orange & brown yarn
• F/3.75mm crochet hook (or adjust based on your tension)
• Yarn needle
• Keychain supplies (if desired) I used these ones on Amazon

Gauge: 

Not necessary for this project.

Notes:

1. Tiny pumpkin will be worked in continuous rounds, starting at the top of the pumpkin.
2. Regular sized pumpkin will be worked in joined rounds (so the puff stitches don’t look off).
3. Ch 1 does not count as a stitch for the regular pumpkin.

With orange, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1 (RS): Make 6 sc into ring. (6 sc)

Row 2: *Puff st in next st, 2 puff sts in next st. Rep from * around. (9 puff sts)

Row 3: Sc in each st around. (9 sc)

Row 4: Puff st in each st around. (9 puff st)

Begin stuffing here.

Row 5: *Sc in next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts. Rep from * around. (6 sc)

Fasten off. Finish stuffing with polyfill. Weave yarn through last 6 sts and pull tight to close the hole. (Note: this is the bottom of the pumpkin).

Stem: Ch 5. Sl st in second ch from hook and next 3 ch. (4 sl st) Fasten off.

Finishing: 

• Create ridges in the pumpkin by using orange yarn like so: Thread a yarn needle. Start with the yarn at the bottom, then insert needle from top to bottom, so that a length of yarn goes along the side of pumpkin. Pull tight to create 1 ridge. Repeat, creating 5 ridges that are evenly spaced around the pumpkin (try to create the ridges in between the puff stitches for the best look).

• Attach stem to pumpkin by weaving the yarn all the way down from top to bottom of pumpkin. 
• Weave in all ends.

Regular Pumpkin:

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around. (16 sc)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, puff st in each st around. (16 puff st)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, Sc in same st as sl st. Sc in next st, sc2tog. *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog. Rep from * around. (12 sc)

Begin stuffing now.

Rnd 8: Ch 1, puff st in each st around. (12 puff st)

How do you crochet candy corn?

You can crochet candy corn in a variety of ways. Some patterns are worked from the top down; others from the bottom up. You can use single crochet or double crochet stitches and still get a great result.

Probably the most important thing about crocheting candy corn is that you get the right colors and shape. In this pattern, we’ll be working from the bottom up using single crochet, and getting a nice finished shape/color!

Using Your Crochet Candy Corn

There are a variety of ways to use your candy corn after making them!

First, you can add eyes and a little face if you want extra cute crochet candy corn. If you opt for this, they would make a great gift for kids near Halloween.

Another idea is to string together the mini and large candy corn into a garland! I may just do this with mine and update the post when I’m done.

You can also just set the candy corns around the house for Fall decorations. Put them in a basket with pumpkins and leaves, or on their own.

Video Tutorial:

Explanation: make some cute little candy corns for Fall decorations this year! You can place these around the house, or sew a bunch together to form a garland. This pattern is a great way to practice your amigurumi skills as a beginner!

Materials:

• Red Heart Super Saver Yarn (100% Acrylic, 364 yds / 333 m, 7 oz / 98 g) in colors cornmeal, carrot, and white
• Or any worsted weight yarn you have in your stash
• G/4mm crochet hook 
• Yarn needle
• Polyfill stuffing

Notes:

1. Ch 1 at beginning of rounds does NOT count as a sc. 
2. Candy corn is worked from the big end to the small tip.
3. The first round will be joined. Then, the second round and onward will be worked in continuous rounds. 
4. From round 2 on, I highly recommend placing a stitch marker and moving it up at the end of each round.
5. Color changes are done by yarning over with the new color on the last stitch of the previous color. When starting with the new color, a slip stitch will be made first to make the join invisible. See tutorial for more information. 
6. The regular sized candy corn instructions will be shown first, with the mini crochet candy corn instructions shown after.

Measurements/Sizing: 

Mini: 2” tall, 1” wide at the bottom

Regular: 3.5” tall, 2 ¼” wide at the bottom

Special Stitch: 

Invisible decrease (inv dec): Insert hook into front loop only of next st. WITHOUT yarning over, insert hook into front loop of the next st as well. YO, pull through these 2 sts. YO, pull through 2 loops on hook.

Crochet Candy Corn Instructions:

Regular Size:

Ch 10.

Rnd 1: Sc in second ch from hook. Sc in next 7 ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working along other side of the chain, sc 7. Work 2 sc in same st as very first sc worked. Join with a sl st. (20 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in next sc and each around. Do NOT join. Place a stitch marker in last stitch.

Rnd 3: [Sc in next 8 sc, inv dec over next 2 sc] twice. (18 sc)

How to Make an Invisble Decrease:

This is an amigurumi technique that allows you to decrease without bulk. It is a great alternative to sc2tog. See the tutorial below.

Rnd 4: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 5: [Sc in next 7 sc, inv dec over next 2 sc] twice. On the last decrease, YO with ORANGE to change colors. (16 sc)

Rnd 6: Sl st in next st. Sc in next 15 sc. Sc in the first sl st. Move stitch marker to this last sc.

Changing Colors Tutorial:

Follow the photos below to see how to do the color changes on Rounds 5-6.

Rnd 7: [Sc in next 6 sc, inv dec over next 2 sc] twice. (14 sc)

Rnd 8: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 9: [Sc in next 5 sc, inv dec over next 2 sc] twice. (12 sc)

Rnd 10: Sc in each st around.

BEGIN STUFFING HERE. After this, add stuffing every few rounds until you get to the end.

Rnd 11: [Inv dec over next 2 sc, sc in next 4 sc] twice. (10 sc)

Rnd 12: Sc in each st around. On the last sc, YO with WHITE to change colors.

Rnd 13: Sl st in next st. [Inv dec over next 2 sc, sc in next sc] 3 times. Sc in first sl st. Move st marker to last sc in the sl st. (7 sc)

Rnd 14: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 15: [Inv dec over next 2 sc, sc in next sc] twice. Sc once more in next sc. (5 sc)

Finishing:

Fasten off. Use the white end to sew up the top into a round edge. Weave in all ends.

Tiny Size:

Want to make a mini crochet candy corn? These instructions are for you! These little guys work up SO fast. I love them!

Ch 6.

Rnd 1: Sc in second ch from hook. Sc in next 3 ch. 3 sc in last ch. Working along the OTHER side of the chain, sc 3. Make 2 sc in the same st as first sc. Join with a sl st to first sc. (12 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in next sc and each around. Do NOT join. Place a stitch marker in last stitch.

Rnd 3: [Sc in next 4 sc, inv dec over next 2 sts] twice. On the last decrease, YO with ORANGE to change colors. (10 sc)

Rnd 4: Sl st in next st. Sc in next 9 sc. Sc in first sl st. Move stitch marker to this stitch.

Rnd 5: Sc in each st around.

BEGIN STUFFING HERE. Add a little more after each of the next 3 rounds to finish.

Rnd 6: [Sc in next 3 sc, inv dec over next 2 sc] twice. On the last sc, YO with WHITE to change colors. (8 sc)

Rnd 7: Sl st in next sc. Sc in next 7 sc. Sc in first sl st. Move stitch marker here.

Rnd 8: [Inv dec over next 2 sc, sc in next sc] twice. Inv dec over last 2 sts. (5 sc)

Finishing:

Fasten off. Use the white end to sew up the top into a round edge. Weave in all ends.

Questions on crocheting candy corn

How do I make crochet candy corn bigger?

If you like this pattern and want to make it in a bigger size, that is definitely possible! You’ll have to start with a longer initial chain, and then make some adjustments along the way. Make sure to keep the decreases on either side of the candy corn. You may want to space out the decrease rounds a little differently to get the right height.

How do I add cute eyes to my candy corn?

Great question! Many crochet amigurumis have faces, and it does make candy corn cute! To attach eyes, you can either use store-bought safety eyes, or sew the eyes on with yarn. If doing the former, you’ll want to attach the eyes before closing up the candy corn. If the latter, you can sew them on afterward.

How do I make a crochet candy corn garland?

There are several ways to make a garland! You can either 1) crochet a chain with one of the candy corn colors and attach the candy corn as you go along (see this tree garland for a tutorial), or you can 2) use string/burlap and sew the candy corn on.

Can I make this pattern in different yarn weights?

Yes! Here’s another great way to make the candy corn bigger – use bulky weight yarn! Likewise, if you want a lifelike sized crochet candy corn, you could use a fingering or sport weight yarn. They would turn out extra tiny.

Crochet turkeys can honestly be made a lot of different ways. It depends on what you’re going for. You can make amigurumi turkeys, which are basically like stuffies. You can use these for decoration or toys. But you can also make flat turkeys for things like coasters. It is best to refer to specific patterns when crocheting a turkey!

How do you crochet pilgrims?

The Perfect Crochet Fall Coaster

There’s nothing that quite spells “Fall” like a crochet pumpkin coaster! Personally, I am a huge Fall lover, so I can’t wait to get all the décor out. You can easily put these around the house to “spice” up your decorations too! (Yes, I also love pumpkin spice…)

Pumpkin pies, pumpkin breads, pumpkin muffins…I can’t resist any of them! They are extra special when made from pumpkins you grow yourself.

Of course, today we’ll be “growing” our own pumpkin coasters when we crochet them!

How do you crochet a pumpkin coaster?

There are many different ways to crochet a pumpkin coaster. However, the basic idea is to crochet a circle or an oval, and then add some cute elements to make it more lifelike.

In the case of this pattern, we will start with a magic ring. We’ll work a variety of stitches into the ring to get an oval, then continue for a few more rounds. The last round will transform it into a pumpkin shape, and the stem will be added on afterward.

Explanation: Some cute pumpkin coasters to spice up your Fall decor this year! These coasters feature a two-in-one design so you can make both tall and short pumpkins with unique stems. Best of all, they work up super fast and make great gifts!

Materials:

• Red Heart Super Saver Yarn (96% acrylic, 4% other, 364 yds/333 m, 7 oz/198 g) less than 1 skein Pumpkin
• Mary Maxim Starlette Yarn (100% acrylic, 180 yds / 164 m, 3.5 oz / 100 g) less than 1 ball Natural
• Scraps of worsted weight yarn in brown and green for the stems
• H/5mm crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Steam blocking materials

Finished Measurements:

Tall Pumpkin: 5 ¼” tall, 4” wide 

Fat Pumpkin: 5” tall, 4 ½” wide 

Notes:

1. Ch 1 at beginning of rounds does NOT count as a st.
2. Ch 2 at beginning of rounds does NOT count as a st.
3. Pull slip stitches tight at the end of each round for a more straight seam (we usually won’t work into the slip stitch itself).
4. Pumpkins are made in one oval shape. The main difference between the tall and fat pumpkin is the way the oval is turned. Rounds 1-3 will be the same for both pumpkins, and then round 4 will be different.

Make a magic ring. 

Rnd 1: Ch 1 (does NOT count as a st) (sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, 2 sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc) into ring. Pull ring tight. Join with a sl st to first sc. (12 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 2 (does NOT count as a st, here and throughout), 2 dc into same st as sl st. 2 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st to first dc. (24 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc in same st as sl st. 2 dc in next dc. (Dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) 11 times. Join with a sl st to first dc. (36 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, dc in same st as sl st. Dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc. (Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) twice. Place a stitch marker in last dc made. (Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) 6 times. Dc in next dc, sl st in next dc, 2 dc in next dc (“bottom” of pumpkin made). (Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) twice more. Join with a sl st to first dc. Fasten off. (47 dc, 1 sl st)

Stem: 

Row 1: Join stem yarn with a sc in marked stitch. Sc between current and next dc. Sc in next dc, turn. (3 sc)

Rows 2: Ch 1, sc in all 3 sc, turn. 

Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog over first 2 sc. Sc in last sc, turn. (2 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sk first st, sl st in next. Fasten off.

Fat/Shorter Crochet Pumpkin:

Repeat rnds 1-3 of tall pumpkin.

Rnd 4: Do not chain. Dc in same at as sl st. Dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc. (Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) 5 times. Place a stitch marker in the second-to-last dc made. (Dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) 6 times more. Sl st in same st as last dc. Sl st in next sl st. Pull these sl sts tight as you make them. Fasten off. (48 dc, 1 sl st)

Stem: 

Row 1: Join stem yarn with a sc in marked stitch. Sc in next 3 sc, turn. (4 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in all 4 sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sk first sc, sc in next 2 sc. 2 sc in last sc, turn. (4 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc. Sc3tog over last 3 sc. Fasten off. (3 sts)

Finishing:

1. Steam block all your pumpkins so that they lay flat.
2. Weave in all ends!

Crochet Pumpkin Coaster Picture Tutorial

Here you can see what rounds 1-2 look like. The magic ring will feel a little strange, but just work the stitches specified. After pulling it closed, you should have an oval shape.

Another tricky part about this pattern is round 4. Here are some photos to help with round 4 for the fat pumpkin. As you can see, by omitting the chain 2 at the beginning of the round, you get the perfect look at the bottom, and it is finished with a slip stitch at the end.

And here are some photos to help with round 4 on the tall pumpkin:

Finally, let’s talk about joining on for the stem. The initial join will be the same for both pumpkins. Just make a slip knot, the insert your hook in the marked stitch to make the first single crochet.

For the tall pumpkin, you will then work a single crochet in between 2 stitches (bottom left photo)

For the fat pumpkin, you will join the exact same way, but simply work 4 regular single crochet for the first row:

As I said before, the Harvest Stitch, along with the other November stitches, utilizes one of my favorite stitches, the Puff Stitch. Puff stitches can be used in a variety of ways, and there are a lot of variations of this stitch out there. I want to give you 4 simple but interesting variations!

So, the Harvest stitch uses 2 puff stitches separated by a chain space to create a pretty v-stitch. Then, these puff v’s are stacked on top of each other and separated by 2 dc to make a neat “harvesty” look!

If you’re new to the puff stitch, do not worry. I have created a revised video that shows you specifically how to make the Harvest Stitch step by step! Keep scrolling down to the instructions to find the video!

One other great thing about this stitch pattern: it only has 1 repeating row! Once you learn that row, you can just keep repeating it over and over again, and the result is this beautiful stitch! I don’t know about you, but I love stitches that are easy enough to do while watching Netflix, but are still different from the simple crochet stitches.

• Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Sugarbush Bold, but you can use anything)

YO, insert hook into indicated st. YO, pull up a loop. (YO, insert hook into same st, YO, pull up a loop) 2 times. YO, pull through 6 loops on hook. YO, pull through last 2 loops on hook.

Harvest Stitch Photo Tutorial

Below you can see the beginning of Row 1. Start by making a chain 3 and double crocheting in the next fsc. Then, make a puff stitch, chain 2, and another puff stitch in the same fsc.

Skip 2 fsc, then make 2 regular double crochet. Continue repeating across Row 1 so it looks like this:

Row 2 will be largely the same, except we’ll be working the ch-2 spaces from the row below.

Start by chaining 3 again, and double crocheting in the next dc. This time for the puff stitches, you will work in the ch-2 space from Row 1. Then, double crochet in the next 2 dc.

Repeat across.

This stitch is really so simple because now you just have to repeat row 2 to your desired length!

All the Fall vibes have been getting to me lately! Where I live, the summer seemed to be extended extra long, but it’s finally starting to get cold! I’m so excited to start wearing my cozy crochet scarves and sweaters. And of course, I also themed this month’s stitches after Fall/Halloween.

I suppose it’s not hard to guess what this first stitch was inspired by, haha! Even though it’s clear that it is inspired by Fall/pumpkins, I have to tell you a little more background about the “pumpkin patch” in my own life.

I have a lot of fond memories going to the pumpkin patch! Each year, me and my siblings got to pick out a unique pumpkin to bring home. It was always so fun to weave in and out between the rows of pumpkins, big and small! One of my family’s classic nicknames for me was also inspired by pumpkins. Since I’m a red-head, my mom always used to call me her “pumpkin pie spice”.

So as you can see, pumpkins have a special place in my heart! Which is why I’m especially excited to share this stitch with you today. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

So how did I get these cute little pumpkins “embedded” into the stitch? The body of the pumpkin was pretty easy to figure out—it’s just a large bobble, which I’ll show you how to do! The stem of the pumpkin was more difficult to figure out, but the final result was worth it!

Crocheting Flat & Tiny Pumpkins

This is not your average pumpkin pattern…

When you search for “crochet pumpkin patterns” you’re probably thinking of an actual round, life-sized pumpkin.

I know there are a lot of patterns like that out there, which is why I wanted to create a stitch that is made up of a bunch of tiny little pumpkins instead!

This is a textured stitch obviously, but the pumpkin square itself will lay flat.

Personally, I think this stitch would look awesome made into a scarf or blanket!

How to Crochet the Pumpkin Patch Stitch

All right, let’s get started on this stitch pattern!

I don’t know about you, but I think these baskets are the perfect Fall decoration. Fall is my favorite season, so I love putting out decorations reminding me that cool weather is just around the corner!

As you can probably tell, these baskets are made using the Tapestry crochet technique. If you would like to review the basics of this technique, feel free to read this post. 

This pattern also uses a special tapestry crochet technique that will make the color changes sit right on top of each other, instead of slanting to the side. I wrote another post about this, which can be found here.

• Red Heart Super Saver Yarn (less than one skein of each color)

• H Hook

Notes:

• You must already know the basics of tapestry crochet to make this basket. To review the basics, read this blog post.

• I carried the orange and tan colors throughout the entire basket using the typical tapestry crochet method.

• I did NOT carry the green every round. I only carried it on each round I used it, and then fastened it off.
• Bottom of basket will be made with the regular sc stitch. Body of basket will be made with the modified sc stitch (see special sts and this blog post)

3. Start at the bottom right corner. Because basket is worked in the round, you will work from right to left with every row.
