If you’ve been reading my blog for any amount of time, you probably know how much I love crocheted lace.

It’s just kinda my thing, you know?

When it comes to Mandalas, I had actually never tried them before I designed this pattern. Honestly, I don’t like crocheting with thread & tiny hooks. It can be so tedious!

So when I set out to design mandalas, there was absolute NO way I was using thread AND a minuscule hook that I could hardly see the end of.

I did end up using the thread (more on that soon) but for this pattern, you’ll get to use a 3mm hook, which in my mind is much better than a hook under 1mm! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Crochet Mandala Wall Decor Inspiration…

As far as my inspiration for these beauties, I have a few different things to share.

First of all, I wanted to create something that was stunning to look at, just due to the stitches.

No fancy colors…just lace.

And more than that, I wanted my mandala to be a modern take on old crochet doilies.

By combining various eye-catching lace stitches, but removing the stale “whiteness” of old doilies, I hope you’ll agree that I achieved the desired result!

Anyhow, I am pretty in love with these as wall decor…shall we take a look at them?!

One very important I want you to know right off the bat is that there are 2 sizes to this mandala. The smaller size is free here on the blog (just keep scrolling!)

12″ Crochet Mandala Hoop Pattern

Materials:

  • Size 10 Crochet thread, or other lace-weight yarn
  • I used WeCrochet Curio for the small mandala, and Gloss Lace for the larger one. I do recommend using cotton. 
  • Suggested substitute: Aunt Lydiaโ€™s crochet thread size 10
  • 3mm Crochet Hook 
  • Yarn needle

Notes:

  1. Mandala is worked from the center outward in joined rounds
  2. Ch 3 at beginning of rnds counts as a dc.
  3. A tutorial for attaching mandala to hoop is at the bottom

Measurements: 

Smaller Mandala should fit a 12โ€ hoop

Note: you may want to wait to buy your hoop until after youโ€™ve made your mandala. You want to get a hoop that is 1-2โ€ bigger than your finished mandala!

Ch 4.

Rnd 1: Work 7 dc in 4th ch from hook, join with a sl st to beg ch 3. Turn. (8 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as sl st. 2 dc in ea dc around. Join with sl st to beg ch-3. Turn (16 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 10 (counts as first dtr plus ch 4), *dtr in next dc, ch 4; rep from * around. Join with sl st in 6th ch of beg ch 10. (16 dtr, 16 ch-4 sps) 

Rnd 4: Ch 3, 4 dc in next ch-4 sp. *Dc in next dtr, 4 dc in next ch-4 sp. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to beg ch-3. (80 dc)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in next 3 dc. 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc. *Ch 3, sk next dc, dc in next 4 dc. 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc. Rep from * until 1 dc left. Ch 3, sk last dc, join with sl st to beg ch 3. (80 dc, 8 ch-3 sps) 

Rnd 6: Sl st in the ch-3 loop to your right – right behind the join you made at the end of rnd 5. *Ch 13, sl st in second ch from hook (picot made). Ch 11, (sc, ch 5, sc) in next ch-3 sp. Rep from * around. Sl st to first ch of beg ch 13. Fasten off. (8 picot sts atop large ch loops, 8 ch-5 sps)

Next Step: BLOCK your mandala before you attach it to a hoop! Your goal is for your mandala to block to about 11โ€โ€”one inch smaller than your hoop.

How to Attach Your Crochet Mandala to a Hoop:

First of all, make sure your mandala is 1-2″ SMALLER than the hoop you are using! Then, follow these instructions:

Written instructions: Join yarn with a sc in the ch-2 space of any sh. *Ch 14, loop ch around hoop. Sk 4 dc, sc in next dc. Ch 14, loop ch around hoop. Sk 6 dc, sc in next dc. Ch 14, loop ch around hoop. Sc in ch-2 sp of next sh. Rep from * around, except on last repeat, omit last sc and simply sl st to your first sc.

Loop the chain around the hoop as follows:

Sc in the 5th double crochet of the large fan, then chain 14 again and repeat this process around!
