Do you know a new mama who is in need of a newborn crochet hat to warm her heart? Or, do you want to help me crochet baby hats for charity? Either way, you’re in the right place! I have 5 adorable newborn hat patterns to share with you today!

NOTE: to see the newest hat pattern released, make sure to scroll to the bottom of this article! (Sorry for the delay on the newest patterns! They are now out as of 11/7!)

I designed these 5 hats with a specific purpose in mind: CareNet! Today we will be starting a fun charity crochet-along that I would love for you to participate in. We will be crocheting these hats for a specific organization in need. See below for details!

Who is CareNet?

CareNet is an amazing pro-life pregnancy center that is saving the lives of babies every single day.

This is CareNet’s mission statement:

“Acknowledging that every human life begins at conception and is worthy of protection, Care Net offers compassion, hope, and help to anyone considering abortion by presenting them with realistic alternatives and Christ-centered support through our life-affirming network of pregnancy centers, churches, organizations, and individuals.“

My church has been supporting CareNet for as long as I can remember, and recently I found out that the center near me is in need of handmade hats.

So, I figured it was the perfect time for a new charity project!

Save these patterns for later by pinning to Pinterest

How it Works/Join

For this crochet-along, we will be making hats for the CareNet in Lancaster,
California. I have been informed that this center is in need of around 30 hats per month.

They give the hats out every time a woman comes in for an ultrasound, and they do about 30 ultrasounds per month, so that makes sense!

I would love to bless them with at least 100 hats as a sort of Christmas gift – a 3 month supply of hats!

Please note that while this CAL is for this specific pregnancy center, I am also open to doing events for other centers in the future. If you know of a pro-life center in need, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Joining the CAL

To jump on board with me in this project, please complete the following steps:

1: Fill out your name, email and pledge using the form below (by pledging to make a number of hats, this will help me keep track of how close we are to my goal!)

Are you looking for trendy crochet cactus patterns to decorate your home? I’ve got you covered with over 15 amazing patterns! I’ve got amigurumi cacti, cactus pillows, and more to show you today.

As someone who lives in the desert, I definitely appreciate cacti. It’s funny though, because the desert where I live does not have the typical kind of cactus that people think of.

Around here, we have Joshua Trees (thus the name of my blog, and thus the picture in the background of my logo!)

Still though, I can appreciate a good crocheted cactus. That’s why I’m excited I get to share a bunch of cool cactus patterns with you today!

How do you crochet a cactus?

Before we jump into the patterns, this is an important question to talk about. Honestly, crochet cacti can be made in a variety of different ways. It really depends on the type of cactus you’re making, as well as the pattern you choose.

However, you can expect (in many cases) to work in the round. This is especially true for amigurumi cacti.

If you are not comfortable crocheting in the round yet, you can try a pattern that features a flat cactus (like a pillow or wall hanging!) If this is you, keep an eye out for the 3rd pattern in the list, a cactus pillow. This one is super easy!

Save these patterns for later by pinning to your pinterest boards

Types of Crochet Cacti

You can make a whole lot of different types of crochet cacti! There are patterns for lots of different variations. Here is a quick taste of what’s included in this post:

crochet succulents

saguaro cactus

prickly pear

barrel cactus

cactus themed home decor

icy cactus

flowering cactus

Of course, saguaro cacti are usually the most common, so many of the patterns will feature this type. But keep a lookout for the other types as well!

15+ Cactus Crochet Patterns

Without further ado, let me introduce you to these amazing cactus patterns!

1. Succulent Crochet Pattern

First of all, meet these ADORABLE Crochet Succulents! Designed by Whistle and Ivy, this succulent is the perfect cactus decor for your home. It is made complete by it’s lifelike container with rocks in it too. The pattern is free, but you can also upgrade to a PDF with 2 additional patterns!

Designer: Whistle & Ivy

2. Cactus Wall Hanging

One great way to crochet a cactus is with tapestry crochet! This Cactus Wall Hanging uses that exact technique for a stunning piece of home decor. The border on the bottom really tops this one off perfectly for me!

Designer: Thoresby Cottage

3. Cactus Pillow

While we’re on the topic of home decor, this Cactus Pillow is another great pattern to try! It is so unique, with the stripes, border, and of course the cactus. What makes this pattern unique is the cactus is actually done in cross stitching over a simple single crochet pillow cover. So you don’t even need to know tapestry crochet!

4. Cuddly Cactus

If you’re looking for a larger crochet cactus, this Cactus Plushie might be perfect. Isn’t she cute? Make sure to take a look at the post, because you can make it as pictured below, OR add an adorable mustache!

5. Cactus Coaster

Another great way to feature cacti in your home is through something like these Cactus Coasters! I love that they feature a cute tiny flower, and also a container to hold them in. How sweet! Ashleigh from Sewrella did such a great job with this one.

Designer: Sewrella

5. Crochet Cactus Pin Cushion

Now this really beats all: a Cactus Pin Cushion! I need to make one of these for myself. It is such a genious idea! You can have practicality and style all at once. You’ll just need some worsted weight yarn and a 4mm crochet hook to make your very own.

6. Crochet Cactus Stitch

Want to make up your own crochet cactus scarf, blanket, or hat? Try using this Cactus Stitch by E’ Claire Makery! This stitch uses colorwork and post-stitches to form the cacti. You can easily use the stitch multiple to make larger projects like scarves!

7. Big & Little Crochet Cactus

This Big & Little Crochet Cactus pattern is awesome since it comes in 2 sizes! You could make a bunch of these for decoration. They would make great gifts too (or craft show projects!) I might need to make one of these for my family that lives in Arizona.

Designer: Crafty Kitty Crochet

8. Cactus Blanket

If you’re really into crochet cacti, you might want to feature this statement piece in your home: a Crochet Cactus Blanket! Unlike the previous colorwork cacti, this blanket uses corner-to-corner crochet rather than tapestry crochet. It totally reminds me of Arizona scenery! I love it!

Designer: Nana’s Crafty Home

9. Bobble Cactus Pillow

Another Cactus Pillow (but very different from the last one I showed you!) This one is also truly amazing. It uses bobble stitches to form a unique, lifelike texture. And it also features the classic flower on top. You can easily use this as a throw pillow, or give it to one of your kids as a plushie.

Conclusion

Crochet Cacti are great home decor projects. While real cacti require little care, crocheted cacti require even LESS! You can easily feature a cactus in your home by making coasters, wall hangings, or just amigurumi cacti to place in different spots. Whatever you choose, I’m sure it will be adorable!

There are just a few more projects that we have for our OCC shoeboxes…it is almost time to send them off!

I’ve been enjoying seeing your projects so very much. Today we’re actually going to be doing something a little different than crocheting though!

When I was trying to think of more ideas for boys shoeboxes, I thought a jump rope was a great idea.

However, I needed something super quick and easy. Let’s just say I wasn’t really wanting to make one out of a crocheted tube with a tiny hook.

I decided to start experimenting with braids and bulky weight yarn. And in the end, I came up with something I think works well!

How is the Jump Rope Made?

To make this jump rope, we will actually be doing a simple 5 strand braid.

The 5 strands give it extra thickness, and pairs well with the chosen yarn: Bernat Blanket.

In fact, I highly recommend you use Bernat Blanket for this project and not a substitution. The fuzzy nature of the yarn really helps the finished result look and function as a jump rope!

How to Make a Braided Jump Rope

Let’s jump right into the tutorial!

Materials:

Bernat Blanket Yarn (or a heavy weight yarn that will not split easily)

Measuring Tape

A heavy object to hold braid in place while you’re making it

Your hands!

Notes:

Jump rope is made from a 5-strand braid. Instructions are basically a tutorial on how to do this.

After getting your braid started, I highly recommend winding your 5 strands into 5 mini balls to prevent tangling of the strands (since they’re so long).

Measurements:

Approximately 69” long (but easily adjustable)

Instructions:

Step 1:

Cut 5 strands of bernat blanket yarn around 95” long each. Note that you can adjust this length if you’d like to!

Step 2:

Gather the 5 ends together and tie a knot about 7” away from the ends. This will create the first handle.

Step 3:

Place a heavy object on the handle you just made. This will allow you to braid without everything moving around too much.

Step 4:

Separate your 5 strands, placing 3 on the right side and 2 on the left.

Step 5:

Begin 5-strand braid: pick up the outer strand from the right side and cross it over into the middle.

Step 6:

Now pick up the outer strand from the left side and cross it over to the middle.

Your finished cross should look something like this:

Helpful Tip: Since you are working with super long strands of yarn for this project, I highly recommend rolling each strand into its own mini ball of yarn after the first few crosses. Then you can just cross the yarn balls over each other while braiding. You’ll avoid so much tangling!

Step 7:

Simply keep repeating these steps! Cross over the outer right strand, and then the outer left strand. After each repeat, be sure to tighten the braid with an equal tension each time. This will ensure that the jump rope doesn’t end up loose or uneven.

Step 8:

Continue to braid until you have only about 7” of yarn left. Then tie another knot to make the second handle.

Note: you can also just work until jump rope is about your desired length. You can stop sooner than I did for a shorter jump rope, and then simply trim the ends of the second handle.

I hope you enjoy this simple jump rope perfect for OCC shoeboxes! Let me know if you have any questions!

Are you ready to make a sturdy pencil case, perfect for a boy OR girl’s shoebox for Operation Christmas Child? This free crochet pattern is just what you need!

The Story Behind the Design

Let’s just say, this pattern didn’t come about easily.

After I thought of doing an OCC CAL, I was rushing around to get all the patterns designed that I would need.

I knew I wanted to design a pencil case pattern…

But, well, every time I tried I didn’t really like the result.

I set aside the project multiple times because I just wasn’t happy with it.

Then, when I finally did finish the case…I never wrote down the pattern.

Can I give you a quick word of advice? If you EVER design your own pattern, please, please, please do not wait to write down the pattern.

That procrastination didn’t turn out well for me…

Because, fast forward a few weeks, and I hurt my wrist and arm!

The reason I’m telling you this story is because it is also the reason why I only made one sample in girl colors.

My original plan was to make TWO – one in girl colors and one in boy colors.

But once I hurt my arm, everything went out the window. I couldn’t crochet or work on the computer. It was a miracle I was able to get everything for the CAL up and running in time!

Sometimes things just don’t go as planned!

So, if you’re participating in the CAL and making a boy’s shoebox – please just use boy colors. I promise, that is the only thing that differentiates between the two – LOL.

Note: make this loop with as many chains as you need to fit around the button you choose to attach!

Finishing

Close flap of the pencil case to see where the button loop lies on the fabric. Attach button of your choice to the front of the case, using a thinner weight yarn that will blend in with the button. The key is choosing a yarn thin enough to fit through a needle, but also a needle small enough to fit through the button holes.

I attached my button at about round 16.

That’s all there is to it – pack up your case with some new, sharp pencils!

Cute Crochet for Girls…

I don’t know about you, but I have always LOVED crocheting for girls!

I guess part of the reason is that I have a little sister who is 8 years younger than me…

Making something that she loves is still one of my favorite things to do.

When I first started thinking about a crochet along for Operation Christmas Child, I had a whole host of pattern ideas for girls!

In fact, I sometimes get a little TOO ambitious with these things

In the end, I designed half of the girl’s patterns myself, and let some other talented designers do the rest!

Everything has come together so beautifully.

Anyway…let’s make sure you have some details about the crochet-along, and then we’ll get straight to the patterns for girls!

The Difficulty of Crocheting for Boys

I don’t know about you, but for me, crocheting for boys has always been SO HARD. It’s just never been something that comes easy!

That’s why, when I first started putting together a crochet-along for Operation Christmas Child, I almost didn’t design a single pattern for a boy’s shoebox!

Eventually I realized that if I did girl’s patterns, I should probably do boy’s patterns too…

I designed a few boy’s patterns myself, and also got some amazing designers to design some new patterns for the event!

Everything has come together even better than I expected.

Anyway…let’s make sure you have some details about the crochet-along, and then we’ll get straight to the patterns for boys!

We stepped out of the cool, air conditioned car, into the heat of the day. As we grabbed our backpacks out of the trunk, I fought the urge to be nervous. This is going to be a hectic 2 weeks, I thought reluctantly. How am I going to find the time for all my schoolwork? I tried not to get overwhelmed as I thought of everything I needed to do. After all, this was where God had us. Somehow, He would give us the strength we needed to serve well for His glory.

We walked into the Community Center. Sunlight streamed in through one window. Quickly, we turned on the high ceiling fans to get the air flowing. Then, we began setting up everything for the kid’s club.

I looked at my watch. About 15 minutes till 1:00PM.

“So, I set everything up with the apartment complex.” Pastor Mark’s voice interrupted my thoughts. “They were excited about the 5-day clubs. They made these flyers to advertise it, and they said they sent out a group email as well. Hopefully kids will show up—but just in case, we should probably walk around and see if we can hand out any more flyers.”

Following his advice, we split into groups of two and walked around the complex. Besides an occasional car driving by, everything was oddly silent. Everyone’s probably staying inside on such a hot day like this, I thought.

We met back a little before 1:00. Time ticked on…no kids.

Once again, I fought the urge to question God’s plan. Why would you bring us here, God, only to waste our time? We don’t have any time to waste! As time went on, the reality that we had no club finally set in. It was time to experiment. Apparently God had other plans for us.

Looking around, there was only one thing to do. Outside the Community center, there was a pool. Despite the hot day, there were just a few kids outside playing. However, in our minds, a few was better than none! At that moment, all our presuppositions and expectations for the clubs went out the window as we embraced God’s alternative path for what it was. We grabbed popsicles out of the freezer, opened the door, and went outside.

“Hi, would it be okay if we gave your kids some popsicles?” Josie called out across the pool. With that question, we launched into our week long, unplanned, spontaneous, SPIRIT-LED 5-day club. It would be unexpected and new every single day. It would be unconventional. I mean, who’s ever done a 5-day club in the pool? And yet, despite all this, it would be rewarding. Little did we know the opportunities God would give and the seeds we would be able to plant.

– AGY Entry #2 –

Well…now that I’ve set the scene for you a bit, let me share more about what’s been going on in the Growth Year!! (If you want to read all the DETAILS about this program, click HERE to visit the official website!) Want to hear all my updates? Sign up for my email list below:

So, our first official day was July 15. After just a week of settling into seminars with the local pastors, Bible college, and more, our team of 12 was launched into 2 hectic weeks of 5-day clubs! Overall, we ran 12 clubs during that 2 weeks (we were split into smaller teams). It was super crazy, but also super rewarding!

Just a little bit more about our “Pool” 5-day club…

As I said, it was very unconventional. Every day there were brand new kids playing in the pool, and every day we would go out, offer them popsicles, and ask to tell them a story. The answer was always yes, and we were able to share the Wordless Book (a method of sharing the Gospel) each time! A lot of the kids had never gone to church, or at least weren’t familiar with the Gospel message. It was such a blessing to just hang out with the kids each day even though our time was so short. A lot of them asked REALLY good questions—things like “Who made God?” and “Why is there racism in the world?” Tough questions to answer. Yet God gave us the words we needed in every moment.

Pool 5-Day Club!

Though this club was not anything like what I was expecting, God intended it to be this way, and it was good. I believe that God sometimes changes our plans just to see how much we’re willing to rely on Him and trust Him. That’s not to say it wasn’t a struggle at times. Each day, I would hope that the kids from the previous day would come back. It was a struggle to trust that we weren’t just wasting our time. Yet, I realize now that those doubts that came into my head were a lie. Looking back, I know God used us to plant seeds in these kid’s lives. He also taught us so many things through this experience. It is definitely something I will never forget!

Now, the 5-day clubs have been over for a few weeks, and we’ve been focusing solely on our studies of God’s word. This has been intense in a totally different way. It’s almost like now, I have to fight to not let everything become a “to-do list.” Do you know what I mean? I start to get in school mode—doing things just to check it off my list. But when I have that mindset, I’m forgetting why I am doing this whole program in the first place! Which is totally STUPID! It is a privilege to be able to learn the things I’m learning. And I AM learning a lot. So, please pray about for me and the other students, that we would have grateful attitudes, and that we wouldn’t waste this precious time that we have.

Hey everyone! Today I have a different type of post to share with all of you. But don’t worry…there’s some crochet in here too! (Hint: a SALE!)

If you guys have been following me on Instagram for any amount of time, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve started doing a lot of posts expressing my faith…sharing Bible verses, other quotes, etc.

The truth is, my faith is a HUGE part of everything I do! I can’t help but talk about it and share about it.

I’m doing this post because I have a big change coming in my life starting this summer. I’m going to jump right in to tell you about it!

The Growth Year

The Growth Year…when you hear this, what does it make you think of? I know, it sounds kind of unique! And the truth is, it is unique.

Basically, the Growth Year is a program starting up at my church for young college students who want to dedicate a year of their lives to God, delve into His Word, and serve him. There are twelve of us who have decided to jump into this journey; 6 girls and 6 guys. We are all extremely excited to see what God has in store for us!

So what will we be doing?

Delving into God’s word—we will be taking online Bible college classes as apart of the program, as well as doing lots of in-depth seminars taught by the Pastors at my church.

Serve in our Community—each of us will be choosing specific ministries to serve in. We will be reaching out on our local Community College campus, as well as serving in Good News Clubs in the Public Schools.

Adventures—we will be going on several overseas adventures…

The first adventure is ISRAEL! After studying the Old Testament, we will get to go to the land of the Bible and walk where Jesus walked! I cannot wait for this!

Lastly, we will be going on a 2 week missions trip to the Philippines! Missions trips are always amazing for stepping out of your comfort zone to serve God in another culture.

A few things have ALREADY happened as well…make sure to read to the end of this post to see!

How does this impact you?

First of all, we need your prayers. This is the most important thing I could ask for from you. If you are willing to pray for me, please comment on this post to tell me! It is so encouraging to know that what we are doing is backed by the most powerful tool we have: prayer.

Second of all, I am currently raising money for this. The total cost for this year is $9,000—which is actually an incredible price, considering everything we will be doing. However, it is still steep for most of us involved.

So, first of all, thank you for even reading this post…just the fact that you’re reading means you’re supporting my business and helping me raise money! But, if you want to go further…

My Etsy Shop is on Sale!

For the next few days, my ENTIRE SHOP will be 50% off! You can snag my patterns for an incredible deal right now! If you’ve been thinking about getting one, now is the time! (These types of sales are rare!)

VIEW THE SALE HERE!

If you would like to support me in a more direct way (friends and family, this is specifically for you!) please contact me for details.

How this Impacts My Blog

There is one more thing I will cover in this post. I want to be completely honest with you guys—I do not know right now how this next year will affect my Blog.

What do I mean by that? Well, this year is going to take a LOT of my time. I am going to be doing everything I can to keep up with designing and publishing patterns…but the truth is, there may not be as many. I hope you guys will continue to support me even if there are random weeks where I’m not answering your questions.

ALSO…I am going to try to update you guys with what we are doing! When possible, I will be publishing posts telling about my faith journey. As I said at the beginning of this post, my faith is integral to everything I do. I will be publishing posts with pictures, stories of God’s faithfulness, and more as the growth year goes on.

With that in mind, let me show you some of the things that have already happened!

The picture below shows our “dedication” at an all-church picnic at the park!

We soon after went on a weekend missions trip to Mexico, which was tiring but SO rewarding!

Besides this, we’ve also done 3 programs of VBS (Vacation Bible School), as well as a week of Camp up in the mountains. Currently, we are doing 5-day clubs in people’s homes, which is an amazing opportunity to share the gospel with kids! I am going to publish a post about this soon…if you’re interested, please sign up for my FAITH email list below. This will notify you about all future posts concerning the growth year (this is completely separate from my crochet email list).

Finally: if you’ve made it this far, I just want to say thanks for reading this. I am so excited to see what God does this next year, and I hope you are too. Thank you for your prayers and support.
