Last week, I introduced my cat to you with a 2-minute cat toy crochet pattern.

After I made that cat toy, I decided to make something a little more time consuming for my cat.

I’ve always been hesitant to do this, because, let’s be real – cats can be finicky. For example, I will never make my cat one of those popular “cat couches”. I just know I would spend hours on it and then my cat would never use it. 😂

So for this pattern, I decided to spend a little more time, but I still wanted it to be quick (just in case).

While faux fur yarn can be tricky to work with at first, it goes very fast once you’re used to it. If you need tips for using this yarn, make sure to keep reading to the end!

But for now, let’s take a look at this super simple pattern.

Materials:

Abbreviations/Stitches Used:

  • Chain – ch
  • Single crochet – sc

Notes:

  • First chain does not count as a stitch
  • You can make this mat bigger or smaller if you want! To adjust width, add or take away chains in the beginning. To adjust length, simply add more or less rows.
  • Tips for working with fur yarn are provided below the pattern.

Instructions:

Ch 31.

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn. (30 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc and each st across, turn. (30 sc)

Repeat row 2 until work measures approximately ____.

Finishing: Fasten off and weave in ends. Make sure to weave them in well since this will be used by a cat and it is fur yarn! 😉

Faux Fur Yarn Tips

If you prefer to watch, below you can find my video with helpful tips on working with fur yarn. But first, here is what I would say:

  1. Feel for the stitches. I know everyone says this, but here is what they mean. You have to feel for the top “v’s” of the stitches. There are several possible holes – the bottoms of the stitches, and the tops. You want to be inserting your hook only in the tops, so keep track of where they are (I show this in the video).
  2. Make sure to count your stitches as you go. It is extremely difficult to count stitches in fur yarn (though it can be done if you’re good at feeling the tops of the stitches!) Instead of putting yourself through the torture of counting at the end of each row to make sure you didn’t accidentally drop a stitch, just count in your head while crocheting.
  3. Also count rows. To me, rows are even harder to count than stitches after the fact, so use a row counter or write it down as you go.

Fur Yarn Substitutes

If you don’t feel quite ready to tackle fur yarn, but you want to make this cat mat, I would use another super bulky yarn that is still fluffy (but easier to see). I’m thinking something like Bernat Blanket or Chenille Home (from Michaels).

Conclusion

A crocheted cat mat is not only adorable, but also functional and practical when you have wood floors! Your kitty is sure to be thankful for a warm spot to curl up on. I hope you and your cat enjoy this pattern for years to come!
