Unusual & Unique Crochet Projects to Try

Welcome to Whimsical Wednesday, where I show you 1 new unusual crochet pattern every week!

We can make so much with crocheting, like typical scarves, blankets, etc…or we can get super creative and wild with what we make.

In this post I want to feature a new outside-the-box crochet pattern each week. Be ready for something unexpected and possibly a little unusual!

Featured Pattern 01/15: Mug Organizer Wrap

Mug Organizer Wrap

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but once you’ve been crocheting for a few years – you end up with a lot of notions. Tapestry needles, stitch markers, measuring tape – not to mention the ever elusive scissors.

But with this genius mug wrap from SweetPotato3 – all these items will forever be within arms reach. While most mug wraps center on functional drinking mugs and protecting hands from heat – we all have that one mug that has turned into a catchall. Now, both the inside and outside can serve as the perfect organizer for crochet hooks, notions, and more.

Crochet Nutcracker / Gnome

Nutcrackers are such a unique part of Christmas. They have a full set of lore and charm – and a special connection to anyone who loves ballet or Christmas music (Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, anyone?) But I’ll admit, I never thought I’d see them intertwine with crochet until I saw this pattern from Jen Hayes Creations.

These figurines are AMAZING & so detailed!! She has instructions for multiple versions & color schemes – all of which are clear and in depth. If you’re looking for a project that can turn into a tradition, this FREE pattern would be a great start!!

Crochet Ball Cap Display

Today’s whimsical pattern is this amazing Crochet Ball Cap Display! If you are looking for a unique gift for your husband or son, this might be perfect. Help him have a fun display and help yourself by staying organized! 😉

More Unusual Patterns:

Backhoe Loader

If you thought crochet toys were limited to animal amigurumi, think again! This week’s creative pattern from Look What I Made is none other than a stuffed backhoe loader – who knew construction equipment and crochet could mix so well? This free pattern has detailed instructions, and would be a fun challenge to make for a little boy (or to display in your project hall of fame).

Colorwork Deer Blanket

It never ceases to amaze me all the things that can be done with crochet color work. And this blanket is no exception! For today’s creative pattern, meet the Among the Aspens Crochet Deer Blanket. This pattern features trees and a deer silhouette, all with a cool neutral color scheme!

Fluffy Beard

Here’s an extra creative pattern that is also quick and easy…a beard! Lol! I’ve seen crochet beards before but this one is unique because it utilizes fur yarn to make it look more realistic. Isn’t this little guy cute? The pattern comes in 3 sizes; check it out here!

  1. Where is the pattern? I’ve looked for a button, blue links, anything. I cannot find the pattern. Thanks in advance,

    1. Hi Michelle, all the links for the patterns will be in the descriptive paragraphs. In the first one “bacon and eggs pillow” is linked and you can tell because it is teal and underlined. Hope this helps!
