18 Modern and Stylish Crochet Shrug Patterns
Have you been looking for a fun and stylish layering piece to go over a dress or blouse? If so, you’re in luck, because today I am showing off some of my favorite crochet shrug patterns!
How do you crochet a simple shrug?
There are lots of different constructions for shrugs, but in most cases they are very easy to make!
The simplest type of crochet shrug, in fact, is made from a simple rectangle with a teensy bit of seaming at the end. Here are the steps to take to crochet this kind of simple shrug:
- Crochet a rectangle
- Fold in all 4 corners to meet
- Sew up the sides of the of each fold partially, leaving an armhole
When you fold in the corners of your rectangle, this is what it looks like:
Like I said, this is the simplest way to crochet a shrug. There are lots of other ways to make the process fancier too! For example, some patterns will add on longer sleeves and a collar after the process above is finished. Make sure you check out the details of a pattern for specifics on how that particular shrug is made!
But as you can see, most shrugs are not hard to crochet at all. In fact, they are one of the easiest garments to start out crocheting if you’re a beginner.
How much yarn do I need to crochet a shrug?
This will entirely depend on what pattern you are using. Crochet shrugs may use less yarn than sweaters or longer cardigans…but then again, some shrugs are very oversized. Make sure you check the yarn requirements in any shrug pattern before you get started.

Types of Crochet Shrugs
There are a lot of different terms that get thrown around when it comes to shrugs. Let’s demystify a few of things before jumping into the patterns.
- Summer Shrugs – usually a lighter, shorter shrug that is made to wear over a dress.
- Cocoon Shrugs – usually a heavier, longer shrug made to keep you cozy in the wintertime.
- Bolero – usually more structured than your typical shrug. Check out this helpful article for more info on the difference between shrugs and boleros!
