I designed these 5 hats with a specific purpose in mind: CareNet! Today we will be starting a fun charity crochet-along that I would love for you to participate in. We will be crocheting these hats for a specific organization in need. See below for details!

Who is CareNet?

CareNet is an amazing pro-life pregnancy center that is saving the lives of babies every single day.

This is CareNet’s mission statement:

“Acknowledging that every human life begins at conception and is worthy of protection, Care Net offers compassion, hope, and help to anyone considering abortion by presenting them with realistic alternatives and Christ-centered support through our life-affirming network of pregnancy centers, churches, organizations, and individuals.“

My church has been supporting CareNet for as long as I can remember, and recently I found out that the center near me is in need of handmade hats.

So, I figured it was the perfect time for a new charity project!

How it Works/Join

For this crochet-along, we will be making hats for the CareNet in Lancaster,
California. I have been informed that this center is in need of around 30 hats per month.

They give the hats out every time a woman comes in for an ultrasound, and they do about 30 ultrasounds per month, so that makes sense!

I would love to bless them with at least 100 hats as a sort of Christmas gift – a 3 month supply of hats!

Please note that while this CAL is for this specific pregnancy center, I am also open to doing events for other centers in the future. If you know of a pro-life center in need, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

• Sport or DK weight yarn in any color (recommended: We Crochet Brava Sport)
• You can use worsted weight for this pattern but it will end up a little thicker and larger. I preferred the result with sport.
• G/4.25mm crochet hook

1. All hats are worked in the round from the top down.
2. Ch 2 for double crochet rounds does NOT count as a stitch.

Measurements/Sizing: 

All hats are designed to be made for newborns. To ensure yours turn out to be a newborn size, make sure the crown of your hat measures around 3.5 to 4” before continuing on to the sides of the hat. Once the hat is done, it should measure between 5.5 and 6” across while laying flat.

• Since this hat does not have a typical “crown”, you’ll just want to gauge the sizing off the other hats. It should be a similar width once you reach the evenly worked rounds (about 5.5” across while laying flat).

With green, ch 3.

Rnd 1: Make 5 dc in 3rd ch from hook. Join with a sl st to first dc.

Pumpkin Design & Structure

It is my first Fall in my new home with my new husband (which is amazing) but that also means I have NO Fall decorations! So I figured it was time to design my first little pumpkins.

When I say these pumpkins work up fast, I’m not kidding. The tiny ones take like 5 minutes, and the larger ones 10-15.

I didn’t want them to look exactly like your standard crochet pumpkin, so I added the design element of some mini puff stitches. I really like how the texture came out using these! (I hope you do too).

To make the pumpkins, we’ll basically just work in the round, first increasing, then working some straight rounds, and then decreasing. We’ll add some ridges at the end as a finishing touch, along with a stem. Easy peasy!

Rnd 1 (RS): Make 6 sc into ring. (6 sc)

Row 2: *Puff st in next st, 2 puff sts in next st. Rep from * around. (9 puff sts)

Row 3: Sc in each st around. (9 sc)

Row 4: Puff st in each st around. (9 puff st)

Begin stuffing here.

Row 5: *Sc in next st, sc2tog over next 2 sts. Rep from * around. (6 sc)

Fasten off. Finish stuffing with polyfill. Weave yarn through last 6 sts and pull tight to close the hole. (Note: this is the bottom of the pumpkin).

Stem: Ch 5. Sl st in second ch from hook and next 3 ch. (4 sl st) Fasten off.

Finishing: 

• Create ridges in the pumpkin by using orange yarn like so: Thread a yarn needle. Start with the yarn at the bottom, then insert needle from top to bottom, so that a length of yarn goes along the side of pumpkin. Pull tight to create 1 ridge. Repeat, creating 5 ridges that are evenly spaced around the pumpkin (try to create the ridges in between the puff stitches for the best look).

• Attach stem to pumpkin by weaving the yarn all the way down from top to bottom of pumpkin. 
• Weave in all ends.

Regular Pumpkin:

With orange, make a magic ring.

Rnd 2: Puff st in same st a sl st, 2 puff sts in next st. *Puff st in next st, 2 puff sts in next st. Rep from * around, sl st to first st to join. (9 puff sts)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st. Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. *Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. Rep from * around, sl st to join. (12 sc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, puff st in same st as sl st. Puff st in next st, 2 puff st in next st (increase made). *Puff st in next 2 sts, 2 puff st in next st. Rep from * around. Sl st in first puff st to join. (16 puff st)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around. (16 sc)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, puff st in each st around. (16 puff st)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, Sc in same st as sl st. Sc in next st, sc2tog. *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog. Rep from * around. (12 sc)

Begin stuffing now.

Recently I decided I needed a new beach bag for my husband and I’s adventures. But not just any beach bag. There were a few boxes it needed to check:

• sturdy, not too stretchy or flexible
• not holey or lacey
• quick to make, but practical
• able to carry lots of things without a lining

The Exploration Beach Bag came out exactly as I was hoping! I was able to use a very sturdy yarn (Wool Ease Thick & Quick) paired with a thick stitch (the Waistcoat Stitch).

Plus, I designed a strap that is super strong! This crocheted bag has no lining, yet it can hold a variety of practical beach items no problem. I hope you love the pattern!

Materials:

• Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick (80% Acrylic, 20% Wool, 106 yds / 96 m, 6 oz / 170 g) 2 skeins Oatmeal
• If you sub another bulky weight yarn, make sure it is very sturdy like this one
• M/9mm crochet hook (or adjust based on your tension)
• Yarn needle

Gauge and Tension:

7 sc in the waistcoat stitch in the round = 4”

While I’ve provided a gauge, I concede that making a round gauge swatch is a pain. If you’d rather avoid this, but still would like your bag to turn out the same size as mine, follow these guidelines: Complete rounds 1-5 and lay the work flat. The measurements should be 13.5” in width at the top and 11” in width at the bottom. If it is way off, you may want to change the size hook you are using. 

Note that it is important to use a large hook for this bag since the waistcoat stitch works in the middle of stitches. If you tend to be a very tight crocheter, you may want to size up.

For height, simply add or subtract rounds to get your desired size (no gauge needed).

Notes:

1. Bag is worked in joined rounds. Do not turn at the end of rounds.
2. Ch at beginning of rounds does not count as a stitch.
3. The body of this bag is worked in the waistcoat stitch. You will work in the MIDDLE of stitches rather than the top “v”. If you are unfamiliar with this technique or if you get stuck at any point in this pattern, please watch my step-by-step video tutorial.
4. Work in the middle of sts unless the pattern specifies to insert your hook somewhere else.

Width at bottom of bag: 11”

Width at widest part of bag: 13.5”

Height without straps: 13”

Sturdy Crochet Beach Bag Instructions

Ch 40. Being careful not to twist the ch, sl st in the first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in each ch around. (40 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in the middle of same st as sl st (again, see this video if you need help with this technique). Sc in the middle of next 8 sts. 2 sc in middle of next st. (Sc in the middle of next 9 sts, 2 sc in middle of next st) 3 times. Sl st to top of first st. (44 sc)

Continue to work in the waistcoat stitch (working in the middle of stitches, not the top) for the remainder of the bag unless otherwise specified.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st and next 3 sts. 2 sc in next st. (Sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st) 3 times. Sc in last 6 sts, join with sl st to top of first st. (48 sc)

Rnds 4-31: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st, sc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of first st. (48 sc)

STRAP NOTES

For the strap, we will not be working in the waistcoat stitch. The whole strap is worked in regular sc, but in the top of the row BELOW the current one. Working below the current row will reinforce the strap and make it super strong and less stretchy. It will also give off woven look similar to the waistcoat stitch, but remember – work in the TOPS of the stitches, but from previous rows.

FIRST STRAP

Row 1: Sl st in next 5 sts. (There should be 6 sts on the side of the bag from the “center” st on the side of bag when laying flat). (Sc in the TOP of next st from the row below) 3 times. Turn. (3 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, (sc in TOP of next st from the row below) 3 times. Turn. (3 sc)

Rows 3-41: Repeat row 2. (To adjust the length of straps, do so here. Just make sure to end on an ODD numbered row.) (3 sc)

Connecting row: Rather than sew the strap down, which would be less sturdy, we are going to use some strong stitches to connect the strap to the bag.

From the far left stitch at the base of the strap, skip 6 sts. Hold strap down so that the wrong side of the current row is facing. Insert hook into the top of the st from the row below on the strap; then insert in the bag, at the base of the 7th stitch. Sc at the base of the next 2 sts working through both strap and bag to attach, turn.

When this join is done correctly, the seam will be on the inside of the bag. See this video for help.

SECOND STRAP:

Row 1: Turn the bag over. Once again you will start with the right side of the strap and then join it to the left side. Lay the bag out flat and line up the stitches on the current side with those of the strap on the other side. Join by making a sc in the TOP of the stitch from the row below. Sc in the top of the next 2 sts from the row below so you have your 3 sts for the strap established. Turn. 

Rows 2-41: Repeat row 2 from the other strap.

Connecting row: Join strap to the other side of the bag in the same way as previous strap, leaving 6 sts in between. Fasten off and weave in ends.

FINISHING:

Turn the bag inside out so that the wrong side is facing outward. At the bottom corner of the bag, join yarn with a slip stitch. Working through both layers of the bag, slip stitch across all the stitches to join the bag together. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Swirl Crochet Cat Toy Free Pattern

Materials:

• Worsted weight cotton yarn (I used Lily Sugar & Cream)
• 4mm crochet hook

Notes:

• First chain does not count as a stitch
• You can make this toy bigger or smaller if you want! See further instructions below.

Abbreviations/Stitches Used:

• Chain – ch
• Single crochet – sc

Instructions:

Chain 8.

Row 1: Make 3 sc in the second ch from hook. Make 3 sc in each ch across. At the end of the row you should have 21 sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for dangling in front of your cat!

Finishing: weave in the end from the very beginning of the project, but leave the fastened off end long.

To adjust the size: you could make this swirl way bigger if you would like! Simply adjust the size of the chain and follow the pattern of making 3 sc stitches in every ch. To double the size of the swirl, start with a chain of 15 (then you’ll have 42 stitches at the end rather than 21).

Conclusion

See, I told you it would be easy! One row, 2 minutes, and you’re done. A perfect little cat toy your cat should love it! I say “should” simply because as we all know, cats can be finicky and picky. Lol.

When it comes to crocheting keychains, you’ll want to choose a durable and strong yarn that can withstand hanging from your keys all the time!

The most common choice for crocheting keychains is cotton, because it is very durable.

Another thing to keep in mind with keychains is that you don’t want them to be too big. For that reason, thinner yarns are usually used rather than heavier ones.

How do you crochet a dice bag?

Dice bags are crocheted in a similar way to a hat. We’ll start by making a flat circle with increases. Then, we’ll stop doing increases to build the sides of the bag up, all while doing a pretty half-double-crochet cluster stitch.

So without further ado, let’s get straight into the dice bag pattern!

Easy Crochet Dice Bag Pattern

Explanation: a quick and easy crochet dice bag that can be used for years to come! This design features lots of half double crochet stitches and a cute drawstring around the top to make sure your dice are secure and not getting lost.

Materials

• I Love This Cotton: (100% cotton, 180 yds / 165 m, 3.5 oz / 100 g) 
• Yarn Bee Soft Secret Yarn (100% acrylic, 300 yds / 274 m, 6 oz / 170 g) 
• Or any worsted weight yarn (I used the cotton for the large bag and acrylic for the small bag)
• G/4mm crochet hook 
• Yarn needle

Notes:

1. Ch 1 at beginning of rounds does NOT count as a stitch.
2. Dice bag is worked in joined rounds.
3. Written instructions will be shown first, with a tutorial on pages 4-5

Measurements/Sizing:

Small: 4” across by 4.5” tall (while laying flat)

Large: 5.5” across by 6” tall (while laying flat)

Size may vary slightly depending on tension. I have not included a gauge because this pattern is so easy to adjust. To make the bag wider, you can add or subtract increase rounds at the beginning. To make the bag longer, you can simply add more rounds at the end.

(Top left photo) First of all, you’ll make your flat circle. It should be nice and even and flat.

(Top right photo) Next, you’ll start the pretty stitch pattern. Make 1 sc in the same st as the slip stitch, skip 1 stitch, then make 3 half double crochet in the next.

Dice Bag FAQ

I thought we would end this post with some common questions about dice bags!

What size is a dice bag?

Standard dice bags are about 7″ by 5″. I made my two sizes kind of in between this size. However, as I mentioned earlier this pattern is very easiy adjustable to whatever size you’d like!

Can I use a different weight yarn to make this dice bag?

Sure! While I think worsted weight makes for a bag that holds up well, you could use a different weight. A DK #3 weight could work well, as could a bulky yarn. Just know that the size will turn out different and you may have to make adjustments.

How do you make a simple dice bag?

If you want to crochet a dice bag that is even simpler than this one, you could decide not to do the fancy half-double-crochet cluster stitch. Instead, you could work regular hdc stitches around without increases. This would be even easier!

How do you make a sectioned dice bag?

Crocheting a sectioned dice bag is a bit harder, but it is possible! Here is a cool pattern that I found. I definitely recommend sticking to a pattern if you decide to go this route.

Mens Crochet Hat Pattern with Bulky Yarn

I used #5 bulky weight velvet yarn to make this mens crochet hat. Yes, I used BLACK VELVET YARN and yes, it was very difficult to see the stitches! LOL.

I know this will not be doable for everyone, but don’t worry! You have lots of options. You can either use a different color of velvet yarn that is easier to see, or you can change up the look and use a regular bulky weight yarn!

If you do decide to go with the latter option, I would recommend picking something very soft, with an even texture. Just know that the look of the beanie will be a bit different if you decide against using velvet.

Isaac Beanie Crochet Pattern For Men

All right, let’s get onto the free pattern!

Materials:

• Bernat Velvet Yarn (100% polyester, 315 yds / 288 m, 10.5 oz / 300 g) 1 ball Blackbird
• Or a similar #5 weight velvet yarn (see notes for more info)
• H/5mm crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge)
• G/4mm crochet hook (or one size smaller than hook that obtains gauge)
• Yarn needle

Gauge:

First 8 rounds of hat = 4” in diameter

Notes:

1. Hat is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join at the end of rounds unless otherwise specified.
2. Place a stitch marker at the end of the first round and move it up for every single round. It is very easy to lose your place when working with velvet yarn, so you don’t want to skip this!
3. Ch 2 at beginning of rounds (on the brim) does NOT count as a stitch.
4. I recommend using any #5 weight velvet yarn for this pattern. However, if you would prefer not to use velvet yarn, feel free to swap out a similar weight. Just know the look will be very different (and make sure to obtain gauge!)

Measurements/Sizing for a Mens Hat

This hat pattern comes in 3 sizes, 1 of which is free here on the blog, and 2 others that are available in the premium pattern only. The free size is a men’s large, which should be a good size for many men. I have included all the sizing info here so you can see what ALL the measurements are.

To Fit Head Circumference: 22-23 (24-25, 26)”

Actual finished measurements:

Men’s medium: 20.5” circumference, 6.5” crown (this size is available in the premium pattern only)

Men’s large: 22” circumference, 7” crown (available for free!)

Men’s xlarge: 23.5” circumference, 7.5” crown (this size is available in the premium pattern only)

Choose a size that measures 2-3” SMALLER than your head circumference. To get a warm, tight-fitting hat you will want to have that negative ease. If you prefer your hats looser, size up. For reference, the size shown is large, worn on a 25” head.

Crown:

Make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: 7 sc in magic ring, do not join. Place stitch marker in last sc.  (7 sc)

At this point your flat circle should measure 7”. It is important that your circle meets this measurement to achieve the right finished size. If your circle measures less, add one more round with just 2 increases spaced to put each increase on opposite sides.

Body of Hat:

Rnd 15: Sc in each sc around. 91 (98, 105) sc

Work in even single crochet rounds until your hat measures approximately 8.5” from top to bottom when laid flat. (Or until hat reaches your desired length!)

Last Rnd: Sc around entire hat. Join with a slip stitch to first st. (98 sc)

Brim/Ribbing:

Rnd 1: Ch 2 (does NOT count as a st), dc around hat. Join with a sl st to first dc, TURN.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, (fpdc in next st, dc in next st) around. Join with a sl st to first fpdc (NOT ch-2). Do not turn.

FAQ About Mens Crochet Beanie Patterns

How do I make sure my hat fits?

In order to make sure your crocheted hat fits, you want to pay attention to the finished measurements, gauge, and ease included in the pattern. For the Isaac Beanie, it is important that you choose a finished size that is 2-3″ SMALLER than your actual head size. This will result in a snug, warm beanie.

How do you crochet a large beanie?

To make crochet beanies larger, you just have to keep adding increase rounds! The bigger the crown of your hat is, the bigger the finished circumference is. In the premium version of the Isaac Beanie, I have an extra-large size that will fit very large heads (up to 26-27″!)

Can I make this beanie in regular bulky weight yarn?

You can, just know that the look will be very different. The velvet yarn I used gives this hat a unique, soft look and a warm feel.

Can I adjust the size of the brim?

Yes! You can easily make the brim of this hat longer or shorter. To make it longer, just keep repeating the same as you did for rounds 3-5.

Can I make this hat for women or children too?

Yes! You just have to make the size of the crown smaller. I am actually working on sizing this pattern for women and children right now! Keep a lookout for when that is all done and released.

One of the greatest things about crochet bags is that they are extremely versatile. They can be used for any occasion, from something as simple as a gift bag to an elegant evening bag.

Also, bags can be as big or small as your heart desires, and you can choose the color and material that fits your style.

Before we get into the list of patterns, let’s talk a bit more about crochet bags for a minute.

How do you crochet a bag?

Crochet bags are much easier than you may think. There is no reason to buy bags when you can easily make them by yourself!

But the truth is, there are MANY different ways to crochet bags. Here are a few methods I have used before:

• Making two squares or rectangles, sewing them together, and adding a handle
• Working in the round from the bottom up
• Making the base, sides, and handles separately and sewing them together at the end

The patterns I am about to show you will probably use one of these methods, or maybe even a different one!

What You’ll Need to Crochet a Bag

Here are the supplies you’ll need to crochet your own bag:

• Sturdy Yarn
• Crochet hook
• Yarn needle
• Scissors, buttons, and the like depending on the pattern (see my recommended crochet tools here)

When I say you need a sturdy yarn for your bag, it really depends on the pattern. Some bags are lined with fabric; in this case your yarn does not have to be as sturdy since the fabric supports the crochet stitches.

If you don’t plan to line your bag though, you will want to choose a strong yarn without a lot of stretch. Cotton is very durable and strong, so it is a very popular choice!

As far as the weight goes, worsted weight (#4 medium) is probably the most common! Finer yarns will definitely not be as sturdy. I find that medium or chunky weight is usually the best for bags.

Types of Crochet Bags

There are many different types of crochet bags. Here are a few of the most popular:

Purse/Handbag: There are so many patterns for purses out there, made from a wide variety of different materials and sizes. If you want to crochet a purse, it is a good idea to line it with fabric so you won’t have anything precious to you falling out!

Crochet purses will certainly gain attention wherever you take them and be the envy of all your friends. Projects like these are also perfect as gifts because they are so unique and beautiful!

Market Bags/Shopping Totes: These types of bags are perfect for carrying your yarns and hooks around with you, or even better, for going shopping! These bags can range from weightless produce bags to more hefty totes or beach bags.

Crochet Crossbody bags: Generally, these bags are a bit smaller, with a long handle. There are some beautiful patterns I’ve included in this list. Don’t miss them!
