However, there are still some hidden gems out there…

Some yarns that have somehow managed to stay affordable. Yes, some of them are value yarns (we’ll have to take what we can get).

But some of them are nicer than value yarns! I’m going to show you all the worsted weight yarns I’ve been able to find lately for $5 or less. So let’s get right into these “cheap” worsted weight yarns.

1. Brava

First up is a yarn I’ve talked about quite a bit on this blog…Brava by We Crochet. While this is an acrylic yarn, it isn’t classified as a “value” yarn. It is fairly soft, and it comes in both worsted and sport weight.

Brava is regularly $4.99, but We Crochet does sales often, so there’s a good chance you can get it for an even better price!

2. Big Twist Value

Next in the lineup is Big Twist Value yarn. Now yes, this is a value yarn, which means you get a lot of yarn for the price (in my opinion, this makes value yarns lower quality). Value yarns can often be a bit scratchy, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by this one!

I bought this yarn in the “prints” version, which is variegated. It was softer than I was expecting, and didn’t split or anything while crocheting.

As you can see in the video below, it worked up very pretty in the Crunch Stitch!

Big Twist Value comes in solids, prints, and ombre. They are all regularly $4.49 per skein at Joann stores.

3. Yarn Bee Soft Secret

Hobby Lobby has some fair prices on yarn. One my favorites is Yarn Bee Soft Secret! This is a great alternative to Caron Simply Soft, which is more expensive at $5.49. Plus, I just like Soft Secret more. I explain why in the video below!

4. Comfy Worsted

Another cool worsted yarn from We Crochet is called Comfy Worsted. This is a pima cotton/acrylic blend. Guys, I love this one. It is ultra soft. Once I made a skirt with the fingering weight version of the yarn (isn’t it cool that it comes in 2 weights?!)

The regular price of this yarn is $4.99, but again, make sure to watch for We Crochet sales.

5. Shine Worsted

At first glance, Shine Worsted seems a bit similar to Comfy Worsted. After all, they are both made largely from pima cotton.

However, Shine yarn has no acrylic in it; instead, it is 40% modal. Again, I just love this yarn. The modal truly gives it more shine! It is still super soft just like Comfy Worsted, but its almost a different kind of soft – less fuzzy, more twisty, if that makes sense.

Shine Worsted is regularly $4.99.

6. Vanna’s Choice

One of my favorite worsted weight yarns has always been Vanna’s Choice! This has been a popular yarn for many years (I just recently discovered though that they stopped selling it at Joann!)

Vanna’s choice is available for $4.99 per skein – either on the Lion Brand website, or on We Crochet. I recommend getting it at We Crochet because of their great sales. They also offer free shipping on orders over $45.

7. Red Heart Super Saver Brushed

Last (but certainly not least) we have Red Heart Super Saver Brushed! This yarn is new to me, and its definitely becoming a favorite.

Of course, I could’ve included regular red heart super saver in this list, but I figured that was so common there was no reason to.

So instead, I went with Brushed! This yarn is fuzzy and super soft. I think it would be great for winter wear. (I have some fun patterns coming soon with it too).

Brushed goes for $4.49 at Joann stores, which is not bad since it is a fairly large ball at 5 oz / 255 yards.

Conclusion

Let’s start out by looking at cotton yarn that works well for blankets & sweaters. I decided to group these two types of projects together because they both need a cotton that is on the softer side.

If you’ve ever worked with cotton before, you might have noticed that it is not soft. But that is not the case with all cotton! These yarns that I’m about to show you will be easy on your hands for large projects, and also produce softer items in the end!

I Love This Cotton

First of all, you have to check out I Love This Cotton. This yarn is from Hobby Lobby, and it is amazingly soft even though it is made from 100% cotton!

Amigurumi is another project you might want to use cotton for. When it comes to making amigurumi, you may need a more sturdy cotton yarn. This is because amigurumi is usually more on the “stiff” side. You want something that will hold its shape well and not flop over.

My first recommendation is Cotlin DK. This yarn is made from 70% Tanguis Cotton and 30% Linen, making it extra strong and sturdy. Though it is not soft, it is also not scratchy. I made a whole produce bag from this yarn and found it pleasant to work with (no hand pain!)

Best Pima Cotton Yarns

Next up, we have Pima Cotton yarns. According to Authenticity50.com, pima cotton is “a higher-end type of cotton with a longer fiber than conventional cotton. It has a reputation for producing a smooth fabric that’s soft to the touch, wrinkle-resistant, and ultra-durable.”

This is definitely true for yarn as well! Pima cotton is often much softer than standard cottons you find at craft stores. The best Pima cotton yarns I’ve found are only available online (at my favorite online yarn shop, We Crochet/Knit Picks!)

One last note here: because Pima Cotton is so soft, it can be great for sweaters and blankets too. The main thing to look out for when using this cotton is whether it can be washed and dried. Some pima cotton yarns are hand wash only.

Shine Sport Yarn

My most favorite pima cotton yarn is Shine Sport Weight by We Crochet! This yarn is a blend of both Pima Cotton and Modal natural beech wood fiber. It is extremely soft to the touch, AND you can wash and dry it! This is one of those pima cottons that works great for sweaters and blankets.

When looking for a dishcloth yarn, make sure to choose something that is sturdy, stiff, and absorbent.

Let’s just say, these yarns I’m about to show you are the yarns that typcially give cotton a bad rap. They are NOT soft and often a bit hard on the hands and arms. However, they are this way for a reason: because they make for great dishcloths that hold up for a long time!

A classic cotton yarn: Lily Sugar ‘N Cream! This yarn can be found at most local craft stores. It has been used successfully for dishcloths for a long time, and it comes in many lovely color options! There are tons of dishcloth patterns that use this yarn.

Our last category of cotton yarn is THREAD! Crochet thread is generally made from 100% cotton because this makes it strong—not easily broken. Thread is typically used for doilies and mandalas, but it is not limited to this!

What to Keep in Mind When Choosing Sweater Yarn

Before getting into specific yarns, we need to talk about broad sweater yarn “qualities” that you want to look for. If you keep these things in mind, you will be able to evaluate yarns that are NOT included in this list, to see if they will work well!

#1: Weight

One of the biggest things to keep in mind when choosing a yarn for a crochet sweater is the weight. Let me start off by saying that this is something specifically for crochet sweaters—it’s not as important for knit sweaters.

With knitting, you can easily use a worsted or bulky weight yarn and still have an amazing sweater. But with crocheting, this isn’t always the case.

Crochet stitches are heavier and much more bulky than the majority of knit stitches. For this reason, crocheted sweaters made with heavy yarns sometimes can look too heavy, stiff, and awkward.

Now, hear me out. I’m not saying you can NEVER use a heavier weight yarn for a crocheted sweater. But, I do believe this is one of the biggest reasons crochet sweaters turn out badly.

Here are the rules I would stick to when you’re considering what yarn weight to use:

1. If you can, choose lighter weight yarns (fingering, sport, and DK). These yarns will work wonderfully and produce a nice drape on the fabric. They won’t be too stiff.
2. If you’re using a heavier weight yarn, choose something that is good quality. Value yarns (like red heart super saver) are usually not great for sweaters. If a pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, choose something softer and higher quality.
3. Consider what the pattern calls for. If you can, stick to the same yarn the designer used. If the yarn they used is not available to you, use something like yarnsub.com to find a similar yarn. If a pattern calls for a light weight yarn, never try to substitute a heavier weight. This will result in a stiff, heavy sweater without fail.

#2: Fiber Content

Once you choose a weight, another thing you need to keep in mind is the fiber content. Crochet sweaters look amazing in a variety of different fibers! I’ve used acrylic, wool, alpaca, and blends.

To be honest, natural fibers are my favorite for sweaters. Almost all my sweater patterns here on the blog use natural fibers like wool and alpaca. This is mostly because these types of yarns are lighter weights.

So yes, weight and fiber content often go hand in hand! Most acrylic yarns do NOT come in lighter weights. They generally come in DK weight (#3) and above.

If you want your sweater to use light weight yarn, you will likely have to go with something natural. However, if you want it to be thicker and warmer, you can try a heavier acrylic yarn.

#3: Ease of Care

All fibers have different ways they need to be cared for. This is one downside of using a natural fiber – these yarns often are “hand wash only.” This is why many people prefer using acrylic yarn. It can be thrown in the washer and dryer easily.

I would say acrylic is great for sweaters that will be worn during day-to-day life. These are the types of sweaters you need to be able to throw in the wash with the rest of the laundry.

But if you want something formal/elegant, you may not mind choosing a nicer yarn that is hand wash only. You will only need to wash these kinds of sweaters occasionally anyhow.

Some tips in this department:

• If you want the best of both worlds (natural fibers AND easy care) try a yarn that is labeled as “superwash.” There are many soft superwash wools that can be washed and dried as normal.

#4: Yardage

Another thing to keep in mind when choosing a yarn is how many yards come in one skein. Crocheting takes more yarn than knitting (quite unfortunately!) So crocheters will usually need more skeins to make a sweater than a knitter. This leads right into the next point…

#5: Price

Yep, I said it. I totally understand that price is a huge factor in making sweaters. Because you need a lot of yarn, making sweaters isn’t always cheap.

I would think this is why many people go with a value yarn when crocheting a sweater—because it’s cheap. But please, do not do this! Trust me when I say the money saved is not worth it. I made several sweaters in red heart super saver when I first started crocheting, and they turned out awful.

You will need to be prepared to spend a little more on a sweater. It doesn’t have to be a crazy amount. You can still find high quality acrylic yarns at a fair price.

Even high quality natural fiber yarns can be scored for good deals. My favorite place to buy low-cost natural fibers is We Crochet. This is an online yarn store only, which allows them to keep their prices down. You will not be disappointed by their yarn; it is amazing!

In fact, some of the yarns I will show in the list below are from this shop.

#6: Availability

On that note, availability is another thing you will want to think about. If you can muster up the courage to buy yarn online that you’ve never touched before, it can definitely be worth it. Like I said, We Crochet is my favorite store for doing this.

However, if you run out of yarn while making your sweater, you will have to wait for more yarn to ship to you before you can finish. This is definitely a downside.

If you don’t want to risk it, you can choose a high quality yarn from Joann’s, Michaels, or Hobby Lobby (or whatever craft store is local to you!) Then, if you run out, you can go grab another skein.

#7: Color

The last thing to keep in mind is the color. To me, this is always a big deal. I am specifically drawn to yarns that are blue, green, teal, etc. (It goes great with my red hair, LOL!)

When you’re looking for a sweater yarn, always check out the colors to see if they have what you like. Sure, it may be the “perfect” yarn in terms of weight, price, etc. but if it doesn’t have the colors you like, are you really going to wear that sweater?

To me, this can definitely be a deal breaker. Make sure to keep it in mind when looking at the yarns I’m about to show you below.

Best Yarn For Sweaters

With those tips in mind, let’s get into the best yarns for sweaters! I’m going to break this up into two sections: natural fibers, and acrylic. I will include the care information, price, availability (everything mentioned above) so you can see how each yarn measures up.

You may want to decide which of the factors are MOST important to you before reading. Then you can easily evaluate each yarn to see which one you’d like most!

Section 1: Acrylics

Brava Sport & Worsted

First of all, take a look at Brava yarn! This is a yarn from We Crochet. It is one of my favorite acrylic yarns because it comes in 2 weights: sport AND worsted! This is a great find because most acrylic yarns do not come in lighter weights, like I mentioned above.

Caron Simply Soft

Next up, a great sweater yarn is Caron Simply Soft. This is a well known yarn at many typical craft stores. You’ve probably heard of it! I like this yarn for sweaters because it is a nice worsted weight that doesn’t come out stiff or bulky (so long as you use a good hook size). I made a cardigan for my mom in it last Christmas and it turned out great. I also recommend this yarn as a substitute for the yarn used in my ever popular Angelica Cardigan pattern.

3. Heartland

Another acrylic yarn that works great for sweaters is Heartland by Lion Brand! This has forever been a favorite of mine. It is unique in that it comes in a lot of “marled” type colors that give extra uniqueness than a plain solid. There are both light and dark colors in beautiful hues!

Section 2: Natural Fibers

Galileo

Galileo is one of my all time favorite natural fiber yarns. It is bouncy, soft, and wonderful to work with all around! I just love it. This yarn is great for summer tops and cardigans, because it is has bamboo in it. But it also has wool, so I could see it working for a warmer sweater as well.

Stroll Sock

Sock yarn is NOT limited to socks only, trust me! You can get some of the most beautiful crochet sweaters by using fine yarn like this one. The stitches will be small, and it will take a longer amount of time, but it will be oh so worth it. Stroll Sock is a great choice because it is mostly wool, yet still easy to care for. It also has good strength to it since it has nylon in it as well.

Here is a great natural fiber option that is ALSO widely available at craft stores: Truboo Yarn! This is a DK weight bamboo yarn that is great for spring and summer projects. It is soft, and gives a great drape too. Not to mention, the colors it comes in are totally gorgeous!

Sugar Bush Bold Yarn

Another amazing choice is Sugar Bush Bold yarn! This yarn is definitely on the expensive side, but I just had to include it because I love it so much. It is made from 100% premium wool for an ultra soft, luxurious feel. If I could afford it, I would use this yarn for all my sweaters. It feels so much better on the hands then regular acrylics!

Is cotton yarn good for sweaters?

Yes, cotton is a great choice, especially for summer garments! It is breathable, which makes it best for warm weather. The only thing to keep in mind is that cotton can tend to be heavy. I prefer to use lightweight cotton yarns.

Is acrylic yarn good for sweaters?

Yes, acrylic is a great choice for everyday-life type sweaters that will get a lot of use. Just stay away from “value” yarns because these result in stiff sweaters that don’t look the greatest.

What type of yarn is best for crochet tops?

For summer tops, you’ll want to choose lightweight plant-based fibers! Think cotton, bamboo, or linen. These all work great for tops.

What is the softest yarn for sweaters?

Natural fibers will usually produce the most soft, luxurious sweaters. Stick to fibers like alpaca or merino wool and you will end up with a lovely soft sweater!

Which yarn is not itchy?

One big complaint about wool yarn is that it is often itchy. This is not desirable in a sweater, I know! To avoid this, make sure to choose a merino wool. These are much softer and not itchy at all!

What yarn weight is best for sweaters?

It totally depends on the look you’re going for! Lighter weights are perfect for drapey, flowy garments. But you can still choose worsted or bulky if you want a warm, cozy sweater.

Which ply is best for sweater?

Yarns will multiple plies will be better than single-ply yarns. Single ply doesn’t hold up as well over time.

How much yarn do I need to crochet a sweater?

It depends on the pattern you’re using, and also the yarn you’re using! It also depends on the size you’re making. I don’t need as much yarn for my sweaters since I am an extra small. You can expect to buy at LEAST 6-7 skeins for a sweater, but it can also get up to 10+ skeins.

There is just something about holding a real-life book in your hands. While crochet patterns are very popular all over the internet, there are loads of printed books that contain gorgeous modern and timeless designs within them.

Even I, having a crochet blog and access to tons of patterns online, love flipping the pages of these crochet books.

In fact, this is one of my favorite posts I’ve ever written, because I got to go through over 40 books and pick out the very best ones to share with you!

I have quite a few recommendations—for all levels—that I think you’re going to love!

Can you learn to crochet from a book?

Before we begin…let’s address this important question. If you are just starting out with crochet, can you learn from a book?

This is a tricky question. Honestly, it depends on your learning style. Learning to crochet from a book requires a lot of reading written instructions while following along with photos. Sometimes books include many photos, while others only include diagrams or limited photos.

Being a visual learner myself, it was easier for me to learn from a real person teaching me, and from YouTube. It will likely depend on your personality.

HOWEVER, there are a lot of uses for crochet books besides just learning to crochet.

Many of the books I’m about to show you include unique pattern books of all kinds, as well as stitch dictionaries. Both of these can be an invaluable resource whether you are a beginner or advanced crocheter!

Crochet Books for Beginners

We might as well start with the basics – books that either teach you to crochet, or have very simple patterns in them. Here are a few of my favorites!

A to Z in Crochet

First of all, we have A to Z of Crochet, which is a really cool reference book that is perfect for the beginner. This book starts at the very beginning and leaves no stone unturned! If you want to learn crochet from a book, this is a great one to use. Every time it teaches you a new stitch or technique, it will also give you step-by-step photos. Topics range from holding a hook, to basic stitches, to more advanced stitches and even finishing touches. Get yours here.

Teach Yourself Visually Crochet

Next, Teach Yourself Visually Crochet is another great option for beginners. It is very similar to the previous book, if not even MORE comprehensive. One thing I noticed is that the section on gauge and following a pattern seems to be longer and in more depth. It also has a section on tunisian crochet! While the look and feel is slightly outdated, I believe this is the book I would choose if I was learning crochet! As the title suggests, it has photos to go along with everything it teaches. DK’s Crochet Book

One last book for beginners is the new edition of CROCHET, which includes over 130 techniques and stitches. The approach in this book is quite a bit different than the last two, but I like it! The format goes something like this: you learn a new technique, and then there are a few patterns that help you practice it. It continues like this throughout the whole book. I think this is a great way to go about it because you are forced to put your knowledge to use right away! Get yours here.

Crochet Books for Advanced Crocheters

Now, let’s go to the opposite end of the spectrum! If you have been crocheting for years and you want something with advanced projects in it, you will want to see these books.

Blueprint Crochet Sweaters

The Blueprint Crochet Sweaters book is super useful if you want to learn more about crochet sweater construction. There are a variety of unique sweater designs, but the book is categorized by construction. For example, there is a section on paneled sweaters and a section on top down sweaters. Each section has tips for making the particular construction. Overall, very useful, but recommended for more advanced crocheters! Get yours here.

Convertible Crochet

Written by Doris Chan, Convertible Crochet is another book with stunning wearable designs. The theme of this book is ways you can make your crochet convertible! It features a variety of beautiful patterns that can be made in a variety of ways—a sweater can be turned into a dress, for example. Chan discusses the how and why behind this in great detail, making it a great read for the crocheter wanting to up their game. Get yours here.

Some of the books in the following sections will be suitable for advanced crocheters as well, so don’t stop here! I will let you know the level of the next books as much as I can.

Modern Crochet Books

Do you like your crochet to feel extra modern? If you’re looking for patterns with a comtemporary feel, I have some great books to show you.

Modern Crochet

Might as well start with an obvious choice literally called “Modern Crochet”! Written by Molla Mills, this book focuses on modern crochet patterns for the home. Projects include baskets, pillows/cushions, rugs, and also accessories like bags and jewelry. One section I found interesting is on Pixel Crochet, which is similar to filet crochet. There’s even tips for designing your own pixel patterns! Get yours here.

Modern Bohemian Crochet

Another book you’ll want to check out is Modern Bohemian Crochet by Beth Nielsen! This one is focused more on modern wearable patterns, like sweaters, shawls, and some accessories. The feel is most definitely “boho” as the title suggests. Get yours here.

Vintage Modern Crochet

Vintage Modern Crochet is a lovely book that is perfect for those who like the two styles put together! All the patterns in this book are gorgeous, featuring lots of vintage lace put into modern garments that will never go out of style! The book is split up into sections by the type of lace that the patterns uses. It has projects with pineapple, brudgest, filet, irish, and tunisian crochet lace! Get yours here.

Colorful Crochet Lace

The feel of Colorful Crochet Lace is actually pretty similar to the previous book mentioned—but with all different projects! The patterns included, written by Mary Jane Hall, are simply stunning. I mean, just look at that pineapple lace top on the cover! This is only a small sample of the gorgeous lace tops, scarves, bags, and dresses included in this book.

The feel of Colorful Crochet Lace is actually pretty similar to the previous book mentioned—but with all different projects! The patterns included, written by Mary Jane Hall, are simply stunning. Amigurumi Crochet Books

Let’s take a turn and talk about something a little different: amigurumi! I haven’t made much amigurumi but I ALWAYS admire people who do and I love looking at patterns.

The Big Book of Little Amigurumi

First of all, check out the Big Book of Little Amigurumi. This book includes 72 amigurumi designs, which is quite a bit! There are many animals in this book, but it is not limited to that! Other patterns include airplanes, robots, and even a tea set with cookies. Get yours here.

ABC Crochet

If you’re a fan of just amigurimi animals, you will love ABC Crochet! The concept behind this book is pretty neat. Most of the animals use the same body and head, so once you learn the basic shapes you can make all 26 of them! The author walks you through the entire process of making one of the animals with step by step photos, so if you’ve never done amigurumi before this a huge plus. Get yours here.

Amigurume

Why stop at animals? AmiguruME is a guide for making cute crocheted people! It guides you through the process of making different shaped heads, different body types and even lots of accessories to complete your person. I think the techniques for making hair are what fascinate me most. Overall, a great book! Get yours here.

Amigurume Pets

The same author, Allison Hoffman, also wrote a book called Amigurume Pets! If you are wanting to learn how to shape amigurumi, this is a great book to use. The book mainly focuses on dogs and cats, with instructions for making endless types of heads, ears, legs, body shapes, etc. so you can customize your doggy or kitty exactly how you like it! Tasty Crochet

One last type of amigurumi book we HAVE to talk about is FOOD. Tasty Crochet has been my companion for quite awhile now, and I never get tired of looking through the photos. This book includes breakfast, lunch, & dinner foods, along with desserts! I made many of these for my little sister years ago, and I can attest to the fact that the patterns are written very well. Our next category is probably my FAVORITE ever! I am in love with crochet stitch books/dictionaries. They are way too cool.

Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters

First of all, I had to show you the Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters, written by Melissa Leapman. I have found quite a few unique stitches in here that I haven’t seen elsewhere. It includes solid stitches, shell, fan, lace, textured, colorwork, and edging patterns! I particularly love the large cables that are included. Best of all, every stitch comes with both written instructions and charts. Get yours here.

100 Quick & Easy Crochet Stitches

Another great collection is the 100 Quick & Easy Crochet Stitches by Darla Sims! This book feels thin in your hands but there really are 100 amazing stitches included. Most of the stitches are unique openwork type designs. Written instructions are included but not charts. Get yours here.

Closed Stitch Dictionary

If you prefer digital learning for stitches, you will love the Closed Stitch Dictionary (written by me!) This stitch collection includes 10 stunning stitches perfect for scarves and blankets. Baby Crochet Books

I love the Beginner’s Guide to Tunisian Crochet, written by Emma Guess. It is great for those who want to get started with this technique! There are lots of step by step photos included, along with 10 modern patterns so you can practice what you learn. Get yours here.

The New Tunisian Crochet

Another super cool book is The New Tunisian Crochet, by Dora Ohrenstein. I have loved looking through this book for years! It has an introduction teaching you the basics of tunisan crochet, but with illustrations not photos. The focus on this book is definitely on the actual projects and stitches. There is 30 pages of unique tunisian stitches that are truly stunning! Along with about 60 pages of patterns that range from tops to accessories to home decor.

Unfortunately, this book can be hard to find. For whatever reason, it is not widely available any more. You can still get it on Amazon, or (quick tip) make sure to check at your local library because that is where I found it!

Crochet Blanket Books

Blankets and afghans are a staple project for many crocheters. So I thought I would include 2 of my favorite pattern books here!

Classic Crochet Blankets

Published by Interweave, Classic Crochet Blankets is a timeless book you don’t want to miss! It includes 18 beautiful blanket designs that are written by a variety of talented crochet designers. There are motif blankets, circular blankets, cabled blankets, stunning lace bedspreads, and more. If I had time I would make all of these! Get yours here.

Big Book of Crochet Afghans

There are endless design possibilities when it comes to crochet blankets! The Big Book of Crochet Afghans is such a cool book with unique patterns included. The one that stood out to me the most actually has crocheted oreos all over it! There is also a log cabin quilt, Christmas blanket, and a ton more innovative designs. Get yours here.

More Unique Crochet Books

For our last category, I just want to show you some books that are great all on their own! I’ve had most of these books for a long time and they are great to come back to over and over again.

Crochet for the Kitchen

Do you love having cotton crochet items in your kitchen? The Crochet for the Kitchen book is such a neat way to brighten up your kitchen with even more! Patterns range from potholders, to placemats, to dishcloths and towels. I will note that the definition of “potholders” in this book is not so much something to get hot pans out of the oven, but more like a hot pad or trivet. Get yours here.

Crochet Bouquet

Crochet flowers are one of those things that are so much fun to make! In the book Crochet Bouquet by Suzann Thompson, there are dozens of unique flower patterns based on real life flowers. There are wildflowers, botanical flowers, stacked & layered flowers, and even a section of leaf patterns to go with them all. 10/10 recommend! Get yours here.

100 Snowflakes to Crochet

Just like flowers, snowflakes are another project that have endless possibilites. The 100 Snowflakes to Crochet book is filled with stunning snowflake patterns. You will have no shortage of ideas with these. Best of all, every snowflake has both written instructions and a crochet chart to go with it. Get yours here (it was extremely overpriced on Amazon when I looked so I have just linked to Barnes & Noble instead!)

Bead Crochet Jewelry

One unique crochet technique is…bead crochet! This book, called Bead Crochet Jewelry, is one that has inspired me for many years. It teaches you how to make bead crochet ropes of all kinds. They form the most fascinating, lovely jewelry pieces that are sure to stand out in a crowd. I highly, highly recommend this book! Get yours here.

Freeform Crochet Book

Last but not least, check out this Freeform Crochet Book! Freeform crochet is a unique method of crocheting that involves NOT following a pattern. You’ll be able to learn how to make different effects in your crocheted fabrics. Basically, your creativity can run free!

Conclusion

Crochet books are an amazing way to get new patterns and learn new techniques. They are not outdated. They are special. I just have to start this post with a story.

I started crocheting when I was about 10 years old. After I’d gotten some experience under my belt, I decided I wanted to crochet a dishcloth for my grandma for her birthday. I was SO excited.

So I got out my red heart super saver yarn (which works for everything, right?!) found a pattern, and worked up a cute little dishcloth.

Before giving it away, I tested it out…and much to my disappointment, it didn’t work right at all.

The “dishcloth” would barely absorb any water. And if it couldn’t absorb water, how could it be used as a dishcloth? Disappointed, I put the project away.

Can you use any yarn for dishcloths?

As you can see, it is NOT a good idea to use just “any” yarn to crochet or knit a dishcloth. It simply doesn’t work.

There are specific things that need to be there in order for the yarn to work. Hint: red heart super saver does NOT have those things!

So before we get into the list of MY favorite dishcloth yarns, let’s talk about what those qualities are.

Things to Look for In Dishcloth Yarn

There are actually quite a few things you want to keep in mind when buying yarn to crochet or knit dishcloths. All of these qualities are very important, but make sure to pay special attention when you get to number 4 – as this is why the dishcloth in my story failed!

1. Durability and Sturdiness

Dishcloths get used, a lot, and for a variety of tasks. They will get worn down. This is why it is important to choose a yarn that is durable and sturdy. It needs to stand the test of time.

I don’t think any crocheter or knitter would want to make a dishcloth that only lasted a few weeks!

2. Absorbency

Another key quality of a good washcloth yarn is absorbency. That is, how well does the yarn absorb water? It needs to absorb it well.

With some yarns, water will just kind of roll off of the project. We DON’T want that. Instead, we want a dishcloth that can absorb lots of water to wash our dishes, counter, etc.

3. Stretch

Thirdly, you’ll want to keep in mind how much a yarn stretches before making a dishcloth.

Basically, you will want to make sure that it doesn’t stretch too much. Think about it – if you use a super stretchy yarn, the dishcloth will get all out of shape everytime you use it. It will be better if it is made from a firmer yarn.

4. Fiber Content

Here it is, folks, the MOST important thing about dishcloth yarn: the fiber content. This means, the materials that the yarn is made out of. If it is made from certain fibers, your dishcloth will function beautifully…or vice versa. So let’s take a look at some common fiber contents that WILL work and some that WON’T work.

Cotton

As a general rule, dishcloths need to be made out of cotton yarn. If you find a yarn that is 100% cotton, there’s a good chance it will work wonderfully for a dishcloth!

Why? Well, cotton matches all of the first 3 characteristics we talked about above. It is very durable. Dishcloths made from cotton hold up for a long time, despite lots of everyday use.

It is very absorbent—you’ll have no trouble with water “rolling” off! And the stretch is just about right with cotton yarn. Dishcloths will stretch a bit, especially depending on the stitch you use, but it won’t be any crazy amount.

Polyester and Nylon

Another fiber possibility that works well is polyester! However, not just any polyester or nylon. If you want to use this fiber, make sure you get a scrubby yarn that is specifically designed for dishcloths.

One of the yarns I will show you later is actually 100% polyester, and it is made for the purpose of crocheted scrubbies/dishcloths. These yarns generally work great!

Just make sure you stay away from other yarns with these fibers that aren’t designed for this purpose. For example, if you have a hank of hand-dyed yarn that is 25% nylon, that doesn’t mean you should use it for a dishcloth! I guarantee you that wouldn’t work well.

Acrylic

Now, for the elephant in the room…acrylic. I have to be honest – I have never seen an instance where acrylic works well for dishcloths.

As you might’ve guessed, red heart super saver, the yarn I used in my story, is made from acrylic. And yes, that is the reason why the dishcloth failed.

Acrylic is simply not absorbent enough. This is the fiber that water rolls off of! I guess it kind of makes sense, because acrylic yarn is made from a type of plastic (whereas cotton is plant-based!)

5. Care Instructions

So, by now we’ve established that cotton yarn is best for dishcloths, with some cases of polyester and nylon being acceptable too. But now let’s narrow down those categories even more.

Once you are looking at a specific cotton yarn, another consideration before buying is the care instructions. You are generally going to want to buy a yarn that is machine washable and dryable.

I’m sure you know that dishcloths are bound to get very dirty over time, so this is pretty much a necessity. Thankfully, most cotton yarns fit this description!

6. Color

Next, does your possible dishcloth yarn have the colors you like? Some yarns come in a wide variety of colors, while others do not.

Of course, this is very subjective. Only you know which colors are your favorite. So just make sure not to settle! You don’t want to buy a yarn just because it is good for dishcloths and end up unhappy with it because of the color.

If you are crocheting dishcloths for a craft show (like I am this year) this would also make colors very important! You’ll want to choose colors that go along with your color palette. For example, I am doing a spring craft fair soon with a sunflower + turqoise theme. So I’ll be choosing the following colors: yellow, brown, green, teal, etc.

7. Price and Overall Value

Lastly (but not least!) you’ll definitely want to take a look at the price and overall value of the yarn. Be careful here – because just because the ball of yarn is cheaper doesn’t necessarily mean it has more value!

Make sure to take a look at the yardage in each ball. How much do you get for the price? And more importantly, how many dishcloths can you make from one ball?

This will help you determine which yarn is best, and also how many balls you need.

The Best Yarn for Dishcloths – the List!

All right, so with those things in mind we are finally ready to take a look at some of the very best dishcloth yarns! I just love all these yarns for dishcloths and I’m excited to share them with you.

Lily Sugar ‘N Cream

My personal favorite choice for dishcloths is Lily Sugar ‘N Cream yarn. It pretty much meets all the criteria that I find important! It is sturdy, not too stretchy, and comes in a wide variety of color options (including variegated options!)

Of course, this yarn is well known by many crocheters. However, I have a little-known buying tip to share with you today.

I have been buying this yarn like crazy lately to make dishcloths for my upcoming craft show, and let me tell you – the prices are different everywhere! It’s pretty crazy.

Michaels sells Lily Sugar ‘N Cream for $1.99 a ball, with each ball containing 120 yards. On the other hand, Joann’s sells it for $3.99 a ball online and $4.99 a ball in store. They market them as a “super size ball” and the balls certainly look bigger. But get this – they only contain 80 yards more than the balls from Michaels!

It actually works out as a worse deal from Joann’s. You could theoretically get those 200 yards of yarn for only $3.20 from Michaels.

But then again, Joann’s carries more color options than Michaels. So you’ll have to weigh all the pros and cons for yourself!

Dishie Yarn

Another one of my favorite dishcloth yarns is Dishie yarn from We Crochet. This is a more unique dishcloth yarn that is unlike many others on the market.

While it is worsted weight like many of its counterparts, it is thinner. You’ll end up with a more lightweight dishcloth if you use this yarn – but that’s not a bad thing! Because Dishie is still just as durable and easy to use.

See the photo for a comparison (with Dishie on the left and Lily sugar ‘n cream on the right). As you can see, the Dishie is more tightly twisted, for an overall thinner yarn.

The only downside to dishie is that you will not be able to touch and feel it before buying, because it is only available online.

However, We Crochet is one of my favorite onlines stores and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed if you decide to try it!

Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton

Another fun cotton option is called Lion Brand 24/7 cotton. This is a really unique mercerized cotton yarn! It comes in lots of fun, bright colors, and it is available for purchase online at Lion Brand or in store at Joann’s.

Now, let’s get into some polyester “scrubby” type yarns! Red Heart Scrubby is well known for its amazing quality and durability. I believe it was one of the first scrubby yarns to go on the market!

This yarn is great for dishcloths where you really need to get stuck-on food OFF. It is also generally used to make smaller, sponge-type scrubbies (like this pattern).

This yarn can be found in your local Joann’s and Michaels, as well as on Amazon (surprisingly, the price on Amazon is about the same!)

Yarn Bee Scrubology

I had to share another scrubby yarn that I just recently discovered called Yarn Bee Scrub-ology! This scrubby yarn is available exclusively at Hobby Lobby (at least I can’t find it anywhere else). While the color options are limited, the yarn is amazing.

It is unlike any scrubby yarn I’ve ever seen! It is thick, which makes a scrubbie work up faster than the previous yarn. I have a round scrubby pattern that I can work up in just 8 minutes with this yarn.

The only downside I’ve found to this yarn is the label says the care is hand-wash, dry flat. However, I’ve remedied this by throwing my scrubbies in the dishwasher to clean. They held up just fine using this method!

Crafter’s Secret Yarn

Last but not least, take a look at Crafter’s Secret cotton yarn! This is another yarn exclusive to Hobby Lobby. I have found it to be extremely similar to Lily Sugar ‘N Cream.

It has the exact same yardage, but I find I like many of the color options better, which is why I wanted to include it.

If you do a lot of shopping at Hobby Lobby, this is a great yarn to grab on their bi-weekly 30% yarn sale! That would mean you could score it for just $1.60 per ball.

So there you have it, my 6 favorite dishcloth yarns! But there is STILL more to talk about when it comes to dishcloths. I know it’s hard to believe, because they are such a quick and small project! But, it’s true. So let’s talk about some more common dishcloth questions before finishing.

Is mercerized cotton yarn good for dishcloths?

Yes. While some people disagree on this topic, mercerized cotton was actually designed in the first place for kitchen items. It is specifically made to be stronger and more durable than other cottons. For more information on this, check out this article.

How much yarn do I need to crochet a dishcloth?

It always will depend on the pattern and the size of your dishcloth. With my 7″ seed stitch dishcloths, I can get 2 dishcloths from one 120 ball of Lily Sugar ‘N Cream. If you like larger dishcloths (the standard size is usually 8″) you may not be able to get two from one ball.

What is the most absorbent yarn?

Generally, cotton yarn is considered the most absorbent. Cottons that are minimally processed will usually be more absorbent. This is actually where the debate on mercerized or unmercerized comes into play. Unmercerized cotton will be more absorbent, while mercerized will be stronger. You’ll have to decide for yourself what you prefer.

Can I use Hobby Lobby’s ‘I Love This Cotton’ for dishcloths?

This is a deceiving yarn when it comes to dishcloths. Yes, it is 100% cotton – but I personally wouldn’t use it for a dishcloth. It is MUCH less absorbent than traditional dishcloth yarns (just watch the video I mentioned above to see what I mean!)

Does bamboo yarn make good dishcloths?

Bamboo will work for dishcloths. It is very absorbent, but it can be more expensive than cotton. It also tends to lose it’s strength and shape when wet.

Are knitted and crocheted dishcloths good?

Yes, they definitely are! While knit/crochet dishcloths are different from your typical store-bought ones, they still work great.

What are other materials I need to make dishcloths?

Generally, you will need a crochet hook, your yarn of course, and some notions like scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends. However, make sure you always check the pattern you’re following to make sure you have everything you need!

What kind of yarn do you use to make Scrubbies?

It is best to use a yarn that is specifically designed for scrubbies when you make them. I wouldn’t recommend using a regular cotton to make scrubbies, but rather something like Red Heart Scrubby.

Are dishcloths and washcloths the same?

Yes, it basically a different name for the same thing. I grew up calling them washcloths, but it seems like I am in the minority because all I ever see them called in the crochet world is a dishcloth! Anyhow, either name works just fine.

There are SO many things you can give to someone who crochets. Yarn, tools, books, patterns…there are a lot of options out there (I have included over 70 ideas in this post!)

The truth is though, every crocheter is different. There are a lot of things to keep in mind before you even LOOK at the gifts. So let’s talk about some tips first.

Tips for Choosing the Perfect Gift

1. Know Your Audience. You know your crocheter better than I do (whether it’s a spouse, friend, or family member!) Don’t buy a gift for them just because I say a crocheter would like it. For example, some of the items I will recommend are very practical. And while some people might like these, others might prefer a more romantic, thoughtful gift. Don’t worry, I will go into more detail in each section of this post on this!

2. Make sure it features crochet items, NOT knit items. Every crocheters’ pet peeve is when people confuse knitting with crochet. Just in case you need to know the difference: if the tool pictured is 2 straight and pointy “needles”, that represents knitting. On the other hand, if there is just ONE tool pictured and it has a “hook” on the end, that is crocheting.

3. Know what type of crocheting they do. This might require a bit of observation if you’re not too familiar with crochet, but you can do it! Because not all crocheters use or need the same types of items. It may depend on what they like to crochet. Here’s what I mean:

Some tools may only be necessary for crocheters who like certain techniques. For example, if the crocheter in your life works with a lot of expensive, hand dyed yarn, they might really appreciate a set of premium blocking mats, or a swift yarn winder.

However, if the crocheter in your life usually buys value yarn from Joann’s or Michaels, they might not even know WHAT blocking is. And they won’t need a yarn winder.

I know all of this might sound like Greek if you’re not familiar with crochet. BUT the point I’m mainly trying to get across is that you might need to do a little observation and a little research. Pay attention to what your crocheter uses often. Then, do some research to make sure the gift you choose is something they would actually like.

Let’s start at the very beginning. What is fingering weight yarn anyway?

Fingering weight yarn is a lightweight yarn that is amazing to crochet with! It is usually categorized as #1 yarn weight—right in between the size of lace or sport yarn. This is also known as a “super fine” yarn.

In addition, fingering weight yarns are usually 4ply (read this for more information on yarn ply), and can be found in a variety of different fibers like wool, bamboo, silk, or cotton.

How is fingering yarn different from other types of yarn?

Fingering weight yarn is lightweight, so it creates thinner crochet projects than its counterparts such as worsted or bulky weight. It also makes for better drape on any projects, which makes it an excellent choice for crocheted garments.

Another unique thing about fingering yarn is it’s tendency to be hand-dyed. It is not often found in local craft stores like Joann or Michaels.

These stores carry mostly inexpensive, acrylic yarns in heavier yarn weights. To find good fingering weight yarns, you’re likely going to have to either shop online, or find a locally owned yarn store.

Here is an example of what hand-dyed fingering weight yarn looks like. As you can see, this yarn is most often sold in HANKS, not skeins.

While we’re on the topic of craft stores…another VERY important thing to talk about is how fingering weight yarn should be used in crocheting!

See, there are some stereotypes in the fiber arts world. Most crocheters tend to use cheap, heavier yarns found at stores like Joann’s, while most knitters tend to use expensive, luxury, fingering weight yarn.

Sometimes, crocheters look down on knitters for being yarn snobs, and knitters look down on crocheters for being cheap!

I am bringing this up because I think that we as crocheters actually have something to LEARN from knitters. The truth is, crocheting looks absolutely AMAZING in fingering weight yarn!

Crochet stitches are actually thicker and denser than knit stitches. So using a worsted weight yarn in a crochet sweater, for example, can turn out badly if you’re inexperienced.

Fingering weight yarn, on the other hand, is perfectly complimentary to our denser crochet stitches! It will give your project amazing drape in contrast to heavier yarns.

My point in writing this little section is to encourage crocheters to get out of their comfort zone! Try a fingering weight yarn, and I promise, you won’t be able to go back!

What projects work for fingering weight yarn?

You can make practically anything with fingering weight yarn! The possibilities are endless! Here are some ideas:

• Socks
• Lightweight scarves
• Shawls
• Anything lacy

I’ll give you some pattern links toward the end of this post! The only projects I wouldn’t recommend using fingering weight yarn on are things like baby blankets or items that may get ruined easily. Because fingering yarn is often more expensive, you may want to save it for adult items.

What colors does fingering weight yarn come in?

Fingering weight yarn comes in a wide variety of colors just like other types of yarn out there. There will be lots of solids and lots of variegated!

One thing to look for when choosing a color is how it is dyed. Hand-dyed fingering yarn can be a little deceptive because you may think you are getting a yarn that will result in color blocked stripes, when it is actually dyed in a variegated style.

Disadvantages of fingering weight yarn

While fingering weight does have a lot of benefits, it also has its downsides. Since it is thinner than other types of yarn like bulky or sport, it can also be harder to find patterns. It will also cost a lot more to make large projects with this yarn, especially if you are going the hand-dyed route.

However, this should not deter you from using this yarn! It is totally worth the extra expense…and don’t worry, I will show you some fingering yarns that are less expensive too!

As far as buying Chroma Fingering, your best bet will be to use the Knit Picks or We Crochet website. It is not widely available on Amazon, and will likely cost you more money there.

2. Cascade Heritage Yarn

Another amazing fingering weight yarn is Cascade Heritage! I have a bunch of these hanks in different colors in my stash that I still need to use. They are just too pretty to touch! LOL.

Cascade Heritage Yarn comes in 100 gram hanks. The 75% superwash wool, and 25% nylon fingering weight yarn is very soft. It can be machine washed and it’s also soft after being washed.

Fingering weight yarn is a great choice for crochet projects because it will make your stitches less bulky. And Cascade Heritage is no exception! Even beginners can create something beautiful without much effort when using this yarn!

3. Malabrigo Mechita Yarn

One of my favorite things about this yarn is how wonderfully soft it is. Because it is made from merino wool, you get such a lovely finished feel on your project. And since Malabrigo Mechita is also a superwash wool, it will take your washings without a problem and still look great for years to come.

This yarn will be a bit more on the expensive side. However, that is usually the case with hand-dyed yarn. And trust me, it is totally worth the price!

Knit Picks Hawthorne fingering yarn is made from 80% Fine Superwash Highland Wool and 20% Polyamide. Each 100 gram hank comes with 357 yards in each. It is made with a high twist for extra durability and bounciness. This is what makes it great for socks!

However, you are also not confined to socks when using this yarn! Hawthorn is also great for precision projects that require a high level of detail such as lace or intarsia designs. It can be used for sweaters, as well as accessories such as hats, scarves, socks or gloves.

The only thing I would keep in mind is that this is not the softest fingering yarn out there. It is not scratchy, but also not soft, if you know what I mean. This is because it is made from highland wool, not merino wool.

When purchasing, this is another yarn that will be cheaper to buy directly from the supplier, rather than on Amazon.

Overall, Hawthorn will create a fabric that is light, yet warm. The color options are amazing and it is definitely worth checking out!

Variegated colors are usually worked alternately across one row of crocheting, creating stripes with gaps between them. On the other hand, gradients create a self striping effect, with blending between each new color.

What is a Gradient Yarn CAKE?
