Have you crocheted a coaster before? Coasters are a fantastic pattern for beginner and advanced crocheters alike for many reasons.

How do you crochet a coaster?
There are a variety of methods for crocheting coasters. By far the most common is making a simple circle—starting from the center, and gradually making the coaster bigger while using increases to keep it flat.
However, you can also make square coasters by working back and forth in rows, or mug rugs by working in rows and attaching mini fringe at the end.
In addition, there are unique coasters made from the shapes of animals, hearts, etc. These often have a different construction.
The bottom line, though, is that coasters are usually very easy to make. Many of the patterns I’m about to show you have tutorials and videos to help you through the process if you’re a beginner!
Which Yarn is Best for Crochet coasters?
Great question! Overall, the best choice of yarn for crochet coasters is cotton. Cotton checks all of the boxes: it is absorbent, durable, and fairly easy to wash.
Now that being said, you can also use acrylic to make coasters. Cotton is considered superior because of its absorbency, but that doesn’t mean acrylic is necessarily bad for coasters.
The main difference is that any water that collects on top of the coaster will not soak into an acrylic coaster (making it easier to roll off onto a surface).
You may hear that acrylic doesn’t do well with heat. While this is true, people generally don’t use coasters for anything hotter than a coffee cup. So as long as you don’t try to use your coaster as a potholder, you should be fine!
So to sum up, I use both when making coasters. I haven’t had any huge issues with either cotton or acrylic!
