These are all questions we ask ourself before starting a crochet sweater project, but even more so when you’re new to it.

Trust me, I know – awhile back I sent out a survey to my email list and there were quite a lot of responses from people who were intimidated by crocheted garments. So, you’re not alone!

Is it actually hard to crochet a sweater?

You may be wondering if your fear is justified or not. Is it really that hard to crochet sweaters?

Well, it really depends on your level, the pattern you choose, and even more factors.

There are plenty of very easy crocheted sweater patterns out there.

If you do some research BEFORE starting, and you choose an easy pattern, your transition into lovely crochet garments can be easy as pie (just like other beginner crochet techniques!)

Here are some tips to get you started on the right track.

1. Learn First

If you want to save yourself mistakes and flopped garments, it can be a good idea to read up on the topic before starting. Here are some things you’ll want to understand:

• How to measure your body
• How to choose the correct size to make
• How ease affects your garments
• How to choose the right yarn
• How to make a gauge swatch

Out of all those topics, I would say the MOST important thing to understand is gauge. That’s because gauge has a huge affect on how your final sweater turns out.

If you have already tried making a gauge swatch and you can never get both the measurements to match up, here is a little secret that can help you.

Now, you can research all these topics on your own, but if want a done-for-you, central place to learn everything, you can also check out my crochet sweater class called the Garment Primer.

2. Face Your Fears

At some point, you will simply have to jump in and try it. We all learn by doing, and we all learn by making mistakes.

I’m not gonna lie to you – you very well may have a sweater project that flops. If only you could see some of my very first sweaters. They were horrendous! (But then again, I didn’t have the internet and I was a teenager. So you already have way more resources than I did).

I know it can be hard to do, but the more you try (and sometimes fail) the more you will learn and the better you will get at making beautiful garments that fit you!

3. Choose the Right Pattern

Now before you go all gung-ho on me and choose a wildly difficult (but none-the-less beautiful) crochet garment…

Take a step back and remember, you will want to choose a pattern that is pretty simple to begin with.

I have two easy cardigan patterns that use a similar construction technique that is perfect for beginners if you want to check them out:

The Becky Cardigan – this one is oversized and simply made from 3 rectangles sewn together, plus sleeves joined and worked in the round. There is a video tutorial included to help you out. See below.

The Angelica Cardigan – this pattern has the same construction. It has been made by hundreds of crocheters, many of whom have told me it was their very first garment!

An example of a pattern type I would NOT recommend for beginners is a top-down crochet sweater. While these types of sweaters are gorgeous, they do require you to know more techniques, such as increasing and decreasing. They are a little less intuitive when you’re a beginner crocheter.

4. Choose the Right Yarn

This is a point I cannot emphasize enough: the yarn you choose for a crochet sweater pattern matters a great deal. Like it matters a LOT!

Just because a pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, does not mean you should go out and buy the cheap value yarn to make your sweater and expect it to turn out great.

Do you have to use the yarn the pattern recommends? While its better to, you don’t have to. But if you choose to substitute, do so carefully. Try to choose a yarn that is comparable to the designer’s yarn – in weight, fiber, etc.

5. Have Fun & Join Communities

Lastly, I have to remind you…this is supposed to be fun! Yes, crocheting garments can be overwhelming. Frustrating at times.

But all in all, enjoy the learning process. One of the best ways to do this is to join crochet communities of other likeminded people. My facebook group is always open for discussion on these types of topics!

Instagram, Flipboard, and YouTube are all other places you can find inspiration.

There are lots of fears to face in life. While crochet garments may seem like a silly thing to be afraid of, I think one of the underlying fears is a fear of failure. We don’t want to try to make something and find out we’re terrible at it. This is understandable, but we can’t let it stop us! I hope this post was encouraging to you today. It totally depends on the pattern. Obviously, the longer the skirt the more yarn you’ll need. However, unless you’re making a mini skirt, you should plan on buying quite a bit of yarn.

How do you crochet a flowy skirt?

Flowy skirts are made by adding lots of increases around as you go. If you just crochet a round with the same number of stitches each time, you’ll end up with a straight skirt. But if you add staggered increases, you’ll get a flowy skirt. That is what many of the patterns above are designed to do.

How do you crochet a ruffle skirt?

A ruffle skirt is made in a similar way as I described above. Except, ruffles are made by adding even MORE increases! The more increases you add the more the fabric will fold back on itself and create ruffles.

Usually, skirts can be made to have a boho look by using neutral colors and pretty lace patterns. It’s definitely a cool style!

How do you make a long crochet skirt?

The truth is, the length of time it takes to crochet a sweater depends on a LOT of variables.

Let’s explore what those variables are…and then we’ll look at a survey showing how long it takes real crocheters like you to complete a sweater!

#1: Difficulty of Pattern

The first variable is the difficulty of the pattern you choose. Difficult crochet sweater patterns may take longer to make than a sweater made from simple double crochet, for example.

If you’re a beginner, make sure to start by making a sweater that is geared toward beginners (like this Angelica Cardigan, which has been made successfully by many beginners!)

#2: Experience Level of the Crocheter

Another factor that goes into it is the experience of the person making the sweater. If you are an advanced crocheter, it may be extremely easy to follow a pattern. It becomes like second nature the more you do it, so it goes much quicker.

Whereas, a beginner might spend a half hour just trying to figure out what size to choose because they’re unfamiliar with ease. And then another 2 hours trying to get the right size gauge swatch because they are not used to meeting gauge.

how fast you can crochet

This is related but slightly different—it also depends on if you are a fast or slow crocheter. Obviously, the faster you can crochet, the faster you will finish a large project like a sweater.

This doesn’t necessarily correspond to one’s experience level though. Someone can be very advanced at crochet and still prefer to crochet at a slower pace.

Time Per day spent crocheting

Once again this is obvious, but the more time you can spend per day crocheting, the faster you will finish your sweater.

If, for example, you are a busy mom and can only spare 2 hours a week for crocheting, it will take much longer than if you can spend 1 hour per DAY on the project.

With that said, a little planning can go a long way when trying to finish a large project like a sweater! If you plan out times to sit down and crochet, it may go faster than working sporatically.

Size you’re making

The time committment for a sweater also largely depends on the size you choose to make. If you need to make the size 2XL, you will have more overall stitches to make than an XS, for example.

So as you can see, the amount of time it takes to crochet a sweater is dependant on MANY different factors! It is impossible to give you 1 specific time frame for finishing a sweater.

But with that said, I did want to help out by providing some ranges you can have in mind…

How Long it Takes the average person to crochet a sweater

I decided the best way to figure out the average length for crocheting a sweater was to survey lots of crocheters like you!

I did a bunch of surveys on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, surveying over 100 crocheters so we could get some average results!

Let me show you the charts, and then we’ll break down the information.

In Weeks

I started by asking how long it takes to crochet a sweater in weeks. I got an overwhelming response that it takes a month or more to finish a whole sweater.

Now remember, this depends on all the variables above so it will be different for every person. But for 60% of the crocheters in this survey, it took a month or more. 26% said they could easily finish in 2-3 weeks, while only 11% said they could finish in under 2 weeks.

In Hours

I also asked the same people how long it takes them to crochet a sweater in hours. The results suprised me a bit. The number that comes to mind personally is around 20 hours for finishing a sweater.

But, 44% of people surveyed answered it would take them 30 hours or more.

As you can see, 30% of crocheters said it would take them 20-25 hours, 19% said 15-20 hours, and only 5% said it would take them UNDER 15 hours.

In addition to these responses, I also got some comments clarifying exactly how they determined their vote.

For example, 1 person said they can finish a sweater in a week if they work on it 5-6 hours a day.

Another lady said she works full time, but she crochets during her lunch and evenings and is able to finish in 1-2 weeks.

Still others said they could finish a sweater in a few days! This timeline is quite impressive, but it is obviously not the case for most people.

Conclusion

There is a LOT that goes into crocheting sweaters. You need lots of yarn, time, and motivation to finish a large project like a sweater! You are looking at a time committment of 20-30 hours over a few weeks to a month. But don’t let this discourage you. While sweaters take a long time to finish, they are such a worthwhile project! You won’t be disappointed!

How do you crochet a simple shrug?

There are lots of different constructions for shrugs, but in most cases they are very easy to make!

The simplest type of crochet shrug, in fact, is made from a simple rectangle with a teensy bit of seaming at the end. Here are the steps to take to crochet this kind of simple shrug:

1. Crochet a rectangle
2. Fold in all 4 corners to meet
3. Sew up the sides of the of each fold partially, leaving an armhole

When you fold in the corners of your rectangle, this is what it looks like:

Like I said, this is the simplest way to crochet a shrug. There are lots of other ways to make the process fancier too! For example, some patterns will add on longer sleeves and a collar after the process above is finished. But as you can see, most shrugs are not hard to crochet at all. In fact, they are one of the easiest garments to start out crocheting if you’re a beginner.

How much yarn do I need to crochet a shrug?

This will entirely depend on what pattern you are using. Crochet shrugs may use less yarn than sweaters or longer cardigans…but then again, some shrugs are very oversized. Make sure you check the yarn requirements in any shrug pattern before you get started.

How do you crochet a simple top?

Before we get into all the patterns, let’s talk about how crochet tops are made in the first place. There are lots of ways you can crochet a top, but here are the main constructions that designers use:

• Two rectangles sewn together
• Two rectangles with a v-neck in the front, sewn together
• Top-down, circular yoke
• Top-down, raglan yoke

In this post, I will be showing you tops that use all the different constructions mentioned above!

How to make your crochet tops cute

Eek, I love this question! There are endless ways to make sure your crochet tops turn out as CUTE as possible. Of course, the first thing you want to do is choose a pattern that YOU would define as “cute”. But after that, there are still some other steps you can take:

1. First, make sure you choose your yarn carefully. If you’re going to substitute, make sure that it is a GOOD substitution that is pretty similar to designer’s recommendation.
2. Second, make sure you check gauge! There’s nothing worse than ending up with a top that is too big or too small because you ignored gauge. A well fitting top makes for a cute top!
3. Lastly, this is really my own subjective opinion, but I also recommend not using yarns that are considered “value” yarns (like Red Heart Super Saver). I know this can be tempting if you’re a beginner, but trust me – there are other worsted weight yarns out there that look MUCH better made into clothing. One of my favorites, for example, is Lion Brand Jeans (and yes, it is used in one of the patterns in the list!)

Is it easy to crochet a shirt?

YES! If you’re doubting whether you are advanced enough to crochet a top/shirt, don’t worry. Crocheting your own clothing is really so much easier than it looks.

How long does it take to crochet a top?

Crochet tops might seem like more of a time-investment than other crochet projects. They’re larger, and take more energy than quick, smaller projects.

However, don’t let that turn you off! I actually think tops are a great crochet garment to start with because they are WAY shorter to make than a sweater with long sleeves, for example.

Of course, exact time-frames will depend on how fast you crochet. But overall, I would say that tops take a medium length of time to crochet. Not too long, not too short!

I have to tell you the story of this cardigan before we jump into any details. It was NOT an easy road getting this pattern published by summer time.

I ordered the beautiful deep purple yarn a few months back, started on the design, and was making great progress. However, several major roadblocks caused me to put the project on “time out”

First, I ran out of yarn. I ordered more from We Crochet…and when it came, I realized I had ordered the wrong color. UGH!

Then, after I finished an entire front panel, I realized that one of the balls of yarn I did have had a weird coloring to it that made the panel look different from the other panels.

After getting past these 2 roadblocks, I was sewing everything together and realized I had done the shells on the wrong side of one of the panels!

Let’s just say, I might have “fudged” that mistake a bit and by sewing the panel on the opposite way so the shells matched

Anyway, I tell you this story just because I love to keep things real around here! Even designers make mistakes…lots of them.

Thankfully, in the end I can finally present to you a brand new summer cardigan crochet pattern. Meet, the Midsummer Cardigan!

The Perfect Crochet Summer Cardigan Pattern

This pattern is inspired by a summer night – where I live, we get amazing summer sunsets! I really wanted to design something reminiscent of the deep purple glow in the sky right before the sunset turns to the black night sky.

Thankfully, just because it is pretty doesn’t mean it is hard to make! This summer cardigan is simple, yet elegant and beautiful. With the Midsummer Cardigan, I’ve included a statement border with large triple-crochet shell stitches. The best part is, this border is included in the panels themselves – no need to do any extra work after the seaming and blocking portion!

Of course, those same shells will be incorporated as a border on the short sleeves as well.

How do you crochet a Short Sleeve Cardigan?

Speaking of short sleeves – cardigans with short sleeves are very easy to make! They are made in the same exact way as long sleeves…you just don’t have to crochet as long!

In the case of the Midsummer Cardigan, we will be making 3 rectangular panels, sewing them together, and then working around the armholes to make the short sleeves. We won’t decrease as much as regular sleeves do, so that we end up with a flowy, loose short sleeve that drapes amazingly over the upper arm.

Lightweight Cardigan (made with sport weight yarn!)

Another very important factor of a crocheted summer cardigan is that it is lightweight and breathable. I chose to make the Midsummer cardigan with one of my favorite sport weight yarns – We Crochet Galileo! This yarn is a lovely blend of bamboo and merino wool, which makes for a light and bouncy cardigan.

Of course, you can substitute for other yarns, but I would advise you to choose something that has a good portion of cotton, bamboo, or another plant-based fiber in it. This will allow the cardigan to be much cooler for summer.

I chose Galileo because it is breathable but also has just enough warmth with the merino wool added in.

Mid-length (but adjustable!)

As far as the length of this cardigan, the good news is it is very easily adjusted! I made my cardigan to fall just below my hips. There will be instructions within the pattern for how to adjust the length to make it perfect for you! You could even make it into a cropped crochet cardigan if you really wanted to.

Explanation: This lacy summer cardigan is inspired by deep purple glow in the sky after the sun goes down on a hot midsummer day. The pattern features lots of triple crochet stitches, with a unique crochet shell stitch for amazing detailing!

So without further ado, let’s get started with this easy summer cardigan crochet pattern!

Materials:

• We Crochet Galileo Yarn: (50% Merino Wool, 50% Viscose from Bamboo, 131 yds/119 m, 1.7 oz/50 g) Galactic 7 (7, 8, 9, 10, 10, 11) balls
• Or approximately 850 (917, 1048, 1179, 1250, 1310, 1441) yards of sport weight yarn
• G/4mm crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge)
• Yarn needle

Sizing/Fit: 

This pattern is written in sizes XS, with S, M, L, XL, 2XL, and 3XL in parentheses.

The fit: This sweater is designed to be slightly oversized. The sizing is written with 4” of positive ease written in for XS, and 5” of positive ease for the rest of the sizes. If you would like your sweater to be more fitted, feel free to size down. Or, if you would like a very oversized cardigan, feel free to size up. If you are in between sizes, consider whether you would like your cardigan to be more flowy or more fitted and choose a size accordingly.

To fit finished bust size: 30 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52)”

1. Ch 4 at beginning of rows counts as a tr.

Cardigan ASSEMBLY

Lay front panels on top of back panel, with right sides facing each other (inside). 

Using yarn needle and length of yarn, sew across shoulders using seaming method of choice. There should be 31 (33, 37, 41, 45, 49, 53) stitches on each side, with 10 (14, 14, 14, 14, 14, 14) unworked sts from the back panel. 

Sew up the sides leaving a 6.5 (7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5)” armhole opening.

SLEEVES (Worked in the Rounds)

Rnd 1: With right side of cardigan facing out, join yarn with a sc at the base of the armhole. Work 51 (55, 59, 63, 67, 71, 75) more sc evenly around the armhole. Join with a sl st to first sc. 52 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76) sc

Rnd 2: Ch 3 (does NOT count as a tr, here and throughout sleeves) tr in same st as sl st and each st around. Join with a sl st to first tr. 52 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76) tr

Rnd 3: Ch 3, tr2tog over same st as sl st and next tr. Tr all the way around until 2 sts left. Tr2tog over last 2 sts, join with a sl st to first st. 50 (54, 58, 62, 66, 70, 74) sc

Note: if you would like longer sleeves, feel free to add in more simple tr rounds here before doing the edging.

Sizes XS, L, and 3XL

Rnd 4: Ch 5 (counts as a tr and a ch) tr in same st as sl st. (Ch 1, tr in same st) 3 times. (Sk 5 tr, sh in next tr) 6 (8, 10) times. (Sk 4 tr, sh in next tr) 2 times. Skip last 3 tr, join with sl st to the 4th ch of beg ch 5. (9, 11, 13 shs)

Sizes S and XL

Sizes M and 2XL:

FINISHING

Wet block your cardigan to the finished measurements listed. To be sure it turns out the right size, you may want to block it out an inch or two BIGGER than listed, because it will tend to shrink back a bit after removing pins (this is at least true when using Galileo yarn).

I don’t know about you, but summer is in full swing around here. And I am always looking for a nice light top that I won’t get too hot in.

That’s why the Shelby Top is made of linen! The amazing yarn I used, from Darn Good Yarn, is thin and breathable—perfect for summer.

The yarn I used is called a Sport Weight Linen 2 ply. It is such a pretty yarn; check it out HERE!

In case you can’t tell, I’m kind of a crochet lace fanatic. I’m always looking for new ways to combine lace with simple stitches for a pretty, elegant result! That’s exactly what I tried to accomplish with this top. Large, open triple-crochet clusters alternate with simple double crochet for a beautiful finished result!

Another great thing about this crochet top pattern is the flexibility I’ve included in the sizing. Along the pattern, you will see “size adjustment tips”—and I really hope you guys maximize your use of these! They are designed to help you customize the fit of the garment. You still have finished pattern instructions, but you can also deviate from those if you feel the need.

The length adjustment tips are especially there to help you. It was hard to put the length into one measurement for each size because of the large repeats of dc and tr rows. And the length can vary so much depending on your body type! So definitely feel free to follow the adjustment instructions and customize your length.

Pattern is designed with 3” of positive ease. To choose your size: the “to fit” measurement is just a guide. To better determine your size, look at the finished bust size (this is the exact finished measurement if you get gauge) and decide how much positive ease you want. Extra positive ease won’t hurt, as this is designed to be a loose fitting top. 

For reference, model is 5’ 4″ with a bust of 30”, wearing a size Small.

Finished Measurements:

Width of the main body of panels: 16.5 (19.5, 22.5, 25.5, 28.5)” 

Overall Length: 25 (25, 27, 31, 33)” 

Length of sleeves: 10 (10, 11, 11, 12, 12)” 

The overall length and the sleeve length are both easily adjustable; instructions included in the pattern.

Gauge:

16 dc and 8 rows in stitch pattern = 4”

Make a gauge swatch as follows: Fsc 22. Do one row of dc, then work rows 1-8 of Panel instructions. Work one extra dc row (total of 10 rows). For length, take 2 measurements: First, measure rows 2-8; this should equal 4”. Then, measure rows 6-9; this should equal 2”. 

Notes:

1. This top is made of 2 panels, sewn together at the sides, sleeves and shoulders.  
2. Ch 4 at beginning of rows counts as a tr. 
3. Ch 3 at beginning of rows counts as a dc.

Shelby Crochet Top Written Instructions:

Let’s get started on this pattern! I’ve included written instructions, and there will also be a summer top crochet tutorial as well – photos that accompany the pattern as you go!

PANELS (Make 2)

Fsc 66 (78, 90, 102, 114) If you are unfamiliar with the fsc technique, check out the video below:

Row 1: Ch 3, dc in each fsc across. Turn.

Row 2-5: Ch 3, dc in each dc across. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in ea dc across.Turn.

Row 7: Ch 4, tr in next sc. *Sk 3 sts, 4 tr in next st. Rep from * until 5 sts left. Sk next 3 sts, tr in last 2 sts. Turn. 

Note about row 8: the main goal of this row is to end up with the same amount of sts as you had before the shell row. For this reason, we will be doing some sc’s in between stitches. Don’t be alarmed by this, it is okay. 

Row 8: Ch 1, sc in first 2 tr. Sc in between next 2 tr. Sc across to somewhere around the middle of row. Sc in between 2 more tr. Keep doing sc across until 3 tr are left. Sc in next tr, sc in between next tr. Sc in last 2 tr. Turn. Make sure to count sts here! 

Row 8 Tutorial – the series of photos below show where to make that extra little single crochet. You’ll just insert your hook between two stitches and then sc!

Row 9-13: Ch 3, dc in ea st across. Turn. 

Rep rows 6-13 a total of 2 (2, 2, 3, 3) times more. Then, for all sizes except 3XL, repeat rows 6-10 again. For size 3XL, only repeat rows 6-8. Fasten off.

Adjustment Tip: This is one place you can adjust the length of your top! Don’t feel stuck to the repeat numbers above. After you finish the last repeat of rows 6-10, hold the top up to about the middle of your bust. This is about where it will hang on you. If you want to adjust, simply keep repeating rows 6-13. It is best to then end on a row 10. However, you can potentially end on any dc row. 

BEGIN SLEEVES

We will now make the panels wider by adding fsc to each side. 

Row 1: Fsc 40 (40, 44, 44, 48). With wrong side of panel facing you, join these fsc to the main body by doing dc’s all across main body (do not turn your fsc row). After doing final dc of the main body, fsc 40 (40, 44, 44, 52)  for the other sleeve (see tutorial below!) Turn.

Adjustment tip: You can make your sleeves longer or shorter here! The fsc on either side of the body simply needs to be a multiple of 4. Feel free to add or subtract to make your sleeves the perfect length! 

Row 2-3: Ch 3, dc in ea st across. Turn.

You’ve now made your panel much wider to account for the sleeves. 

Row 4-6: Repeat rows 6-8 of main body. 

Row 7: Ch 3, dc in ea st across. 

Rep rows 4-7 a total of 2 (2, 3, 3, 4) times, or until top is desired length & sleeves are desired width. 

Last row: Ch 3, dc in ea st across. Fasten off. 

ASSEMBLY

Lay both panels out, with right sides together. Sew side seams and underarm seams. Sew along the top—from the edge of sleeves to neckline. Leave an opening as big as you would like. (The bigger the neck opening you leave, the more off-the-shoulder the top will be). I recommend doing this seam last so you can try on the top and see how big you’d like it.

This design was born when I decided it was high time to make my mom a cardigan.

Let’s just say that she has been asking me to make her one for…a LONG time.

Last Christmas, I had her pick out the yarn and jumped into the design. While there were some bumps on the way, I’m very happy that I can now share this oversized crochet cardigan with you.

It’s designed to be big, cozy, and warm. Since it has a whopping 11 inches of positive ease added in, I think you could almost consider it a type of blanket cardigan!

It’s just one of those things you love to wrap yourself up in. Like so…

How do you crochet an oversized cardigan?

To make any kind of oversized crochet sweater or cardigan, there’s one main thing that will help (and I already mentioned it!) That one thing is adding EASE. Defined, ease is basically the difference between your bust measurement, and your cardigan or sweater measurement.

To make this cardigan oversized, we will be adding positive ease, which means we will be making the cardigan much LARGER than the size of the bust.

This cardigan pattern adds 11 inches of positive ease. Sometimes this can be scary, especially for us smaller-chested people. However, don’t be afraid to go big or go home! This cardigan is extra cozy and wraps ALL the way around you when you’re done.

Is it hard to crochet a cardigan?

It really depends on the pattern. But overall, cardigans are not as hard to crochet as people sometimes think they are. This particular pattern is designed to be quite easy – the whole body is just made from 3 simple rectangles!

How long does it take to crochet this cardigan?

Because this crochet cardigan is super oversized, it may take longer to make than others. It will all depend on how fast you can crochet. The good thing is that the stitch pattern used in this cardigan is mindless. Meaning, you can easily work on it while watching a show or during other activities where your brain is not 100% focused on crocheting.

A Brava Sport Yarn Crochet Pattern

Let’s talk yarn. I used We Crochet’s classic Brava Sport. This yarn is 100% premium acrylic. It’s not one of those yucky acrylic yarns…yet it’s still very inexpensive!

You’ll need somewhere between 5-8 balls to make this cardigan. But at just $2.49 a skein, that’s still less than $20 in yarn to make this entire sweater in the largest size!

The Becky Cardigan – an Oversized Crochet Cardigan Pattern!

Materials:

• We Crochet Brava Sport Yarn: (100% Acrylic, 273 yds/249 m, 3.5 oz/100 g) Silver 5 (6, 6, 6, 7, 7, 7) skeins
• Or approximately 1200 (1400, 1500, 1600, 1700, 1850, 1950) yards of sport weight yarn
• Suggested substitutes: I Love This Yarn Sport
• H/5.5mm crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge)

Sizing/Fit: 

This pattern is written in sizes XS, with S, M, L, XL, 2XL, and 3XL in parentheses.

The fit: This sweater is designed to be extra oversized. The sizing below has 9” of positive ease written in for XS, and 11” of positive ease for the rest of the sizes. If you would like your sweater to be not quite so big, feel free to size down. For example, if you want a semi-oversized sweater and your bust size is 40”, consider making the Medium instead of the Large. You would still have 7” of positive ease making that size.

To fit finished bust size: 30 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52)”

Finished Bust Measurement (all panel measurements combined): 39 (43, 47, 51, 55, 59, 63)”

Width of back panel: 21 (23, 25, 27, 29, 31, 33)”

Width of front panels: 9 (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15)”

17 stitches and 14 rows in the modified lemon peel stitch = 4”

Notes:

1. Ch 1 at beginning of rows does NOT count as a sc. 
2. Cardigan is made from 3 panels: 1 back panel and 2 front panels. Pieces are sewn together and then sleeves are joined at the base of the armhole and worked in the round.
3. All pieces of the cardigan start with a foundation single crochet row (fsc). If you are unfamiliar with this technique, check out this blog post. Starting with a regular chain stitch is not recommended because it won’t be as stretchy. But if you need to start with a chain, just be sure to add one more chain to your starting row number. Then, skip the first chain and work one row of sc across (this will give the same result of fsc, just less stretchy).

Abbreviations/Stitches Used:

Chain – ch

Slip Stitch – sl st

Single crochet – sc

Repeat – rep

Round – rnd

Skip – sk

Stitch(es) – st(s)

Space – sp

RS – right side

YO – yarn over

Special Stitch:

Puff Stitch (puff st): YO, insert hook into indicated st. YO, pull up a loop. (YO, insert hook into same st, YO, pull up a loop) 2 times. YO, pull through 6 loops on hook. YO, pull through last 2 loops on hook.

Modified Lemon Peel Stitch: Fsc any odd number.

Row 1: Sc in first fsc, dc in next. (Sc in next fsc, dc in next fsc) across, sc in last fsc, turn.

Row 2: Sc in first sc. (Dc in next dc, sc in next sc) across, turn.

BACK PANEL

Fsc 89 (97, 107, 115, 123, 131, 139)

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first fsc. *Dc in next fsc, sc in next fsc. Rep from * across, turn. 

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc. *Dc in next dc, sc in next sc. Rep from * across, turn. 

Rep row 2 for a total of 89 (89, 89, 91, 91, 94, 94) rows. Note: you can very easily adjust the length of this cardigan. Simply repeat row two until desired length.

FRONT PANEL (MAKE 2)

Fsc 39 (43, 47, 51, 55, 59, 63)

Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first fsc. *Dc in next fsc, sc in next fsc. Rep from * across, turn. 

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc. *Dc in next dc, sc in next sc. Rep from * across, turn. 

Rep row 2 for a total of 89 (89, 89, 91, 91, 94, 94) rows. Note: if you adjusted the length of the back panel, make sure to add or subtract the same amount of rows to your front panels.

ASSEMBLY

Lay front panels on top of back panel, with right sides facing each other (inside). 

Using yarn needle and length of yarn, sew across shoulders using seaming method of choice. There should be 39 (43, 47, 51, 55, 59, 63) on each side, with 11 (11, 13, 13, 13, 13, 13) unworked sts from the back panel.

Sew up the sides leaving a 6.5 (7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5)” armhole opening. 

SLEEVES (Worked in Turned Rounds)

Rnd 1: With right side of cardigan facing out, join yarn with a sc at the base of the armhole. Work one dc. (Sc, dc) all the way around for a total of 54 (58, 64, 68, 72, 76, 80) stitches. (If you want to adjust, it should be an even number) Join with a sl st to first dc. TURN.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, dc in next dc (1 decrease made by SKIPPING the first sc, see photo below). *Sc in next sc, dc in next dc. Rep from * until 2 sts are left. Sc2tog over last 2 sts, join with sl st to beginning dc. TURN. (52, 56, 62, 66, 70, 74, 78) sts 

Just to be clear: decreases at the beginning of rounds are made by skipping a stitch, while decreases at the end are made with a sc2tog. Note that the skipped stitch will not be super obvious due to the fact that the round is turned. Just make sure you put your first dc in the nearest dc after turning.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in next sc. Dc in next dc. *Sc in next sc, dc in next dc. Rep from * around. Note that the last dc will look like it’s in the slip stitch join but that is ok! Join with sl st to beg sc, turn. (52, 56, 62, 66, 70, 74, 78) sts

Rnd 4: Rep rnd 2 – (50, 54, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76) sts 

Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 3 – (50, 54, 60, 64, 68, 72, 76) sts

Rep Rnd 2-3 until you have a total of 15 rnds. 

At the end of Rnd 15: 40 (44, 50, 54, 58, 62, 66) sts

Rnd 16: Ch 1, sc in same sc as sl st. Dc in next dc. *Sc in next sc, dc in next dc. Rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc, turn. 

Sizing note: the goal here is to decrease toward the elbow. Feel free to keep repeating rnds 2-3 to add in more or less decreases before working evenly in the next rounds. You want to be happy with the fit of the sleeves before continuing. Also, if at any point during the even rounds, you feel you need to decrease more, that is fine as well. Just repeat round 2 anytime you want to make the sleeves smaller.

Rnds 17-40: Work the modified lemon peel stitch evenly around, turning at the end of each rnd.

Rnd 41: Rep rnd 2 – 38 (42, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64) sts 

Rnd 42-45: Work the modified lemon peel stitch evenly around, turning at the end of each rnd.

TO ADJUST SLEEVE LENGTH: Keep working in the modified lemon peel stitch until the sleeves are about 1.5” shorter than the length you want. This is the place to add length, because the edging starts on the next rnd.

Rnd 46: Work the modified lemon peel stitch evenly, but DO NOT turn. (The point in not turning here is that the next rnd is worked with the WRONG side facing out. If you adjusted the sleeve keep this in mind).

Rnd 47: Without turning, ch 1, sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. TURN. 

Rnd 48 Sizes XS & S ONLY: Ch 1, sc in next sc. (Ch 5, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc) 7 (8) times. Ch 5, skip 4 sc, sc in next sc. Ch 5, skip last 4 sc, sl st to first sc. Turn. 9 (10) ch-sps and sc

Rnd 48 Sizes M-3XL ONLY: Ch 1, sc in next sc. (Ch 5, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc) 11 (12, 13, 14, 15) times. Ch 5, skip last 3 sc, sl st to first sc. Turn. 12 (13, 14, 15, 16) ch-sps and sc

Rnd 49: Ch 2, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in same sc as sl st. Sk next ch 5 sp. *(Puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next sc. Sk next ch-5 sp. Rep from * around. Sl st to first puff st, turn. 18 (20, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32) puff sts 

Rnd 50: Ch 1, *sc in next puff st. 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next puff st. Rep from * around. Join with a sl st to beg sc, turn. 36 (40, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64) sc

Rnd 51 (optional): Ch 1, hdc in same st as sl st. Hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to beg hdc. 36 (40, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64) sc 

CARDIGAN EDGING

To finish the cardigan up, the last thing we need is the pretty puff stitch edging! 

Side Edging:

Lay the cardigan out in front of you with the front facing you. Join yarn with a sc in the left hand bottom corner. 

Row 1: *Ch 5, skip about 4 “rows’, sc in next row. Repeat from * all the way up the side of the left front panel. Note that the chain spaces do not have to be perfectly spaced. I tried counting about 4 rows in between each one, but it didn’t work out perfectly every time and it turned out fine. 

When you get to the unworked stitches between the panels, continue to evenly space the ch 5s with about 3-4 stitches in between each sc. Then, work them down the side of the other panel as well. When you get to the end, just make sure they are as evenly spaced as possible so you can land a final sc in the corner. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 dc in first corner sc. *Sk next ch-5 sp, (puff st, ch 2, puff st) in next sc. Rep from * all the way around both front panels, until one ch-5 sp and one sc is left. Sk last ch-5 sp, 2 dc in last sc. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first 2 dc. *Sc in next puff st, 2 sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next puff st. Rep from * around both front panels until no puff sts are left. Sc in last 2 dc. Fasten off.

Bottom Edging: 

Lay cardigan out again, this time facing you but upside down (since we are going to work along the bottom). 

Join yarn with a sc in the corner of the left panel. You’ll want to join on the side of the last sc row you did for the previous edging (so that both edgings line up evenly).

Rep rows 1-3 of the side edging, but work along the bottom this time. For the very first row, you will want to leave 3-4 fsc in between each sc. Once again, don’t worry too much about it being perfectly spaced.

After you finish row 3, fasten off and weave in all your ends!

The Timberlane Sweater has been a long time in coming, let me tell you.

It all started when I decided to submit a crochet pattern to I Like Crochet Magazine. I wanted a sweater that was going to be unique, colorful, and perfect for Fall.

As I started swatching, I discovered this super cool textured stitch which I now like to call the Triangle Post Stitch.

Little did I know then how awesome it would look in a sweater! I particularly love how the photoshoot came out too.

Styling the Timberlane Sweater

I personally am SO excited to wear my Timberlane Sweater this fall. As I was experimenting with styling options, I came up with two favorite outfits:

1. For a more casual look, just throw on your favorite pair of jeans with the sweater!
2. For a dressier look, I put it over a dress in a complimentary color. You could also try a skirt! I would recommend having something flowy though, as it goes well with the sweater.

Yarn Needed for the Sweater:

• Sugar Bush Bold Yarn (100% superwash merino wool, 190yds/173m, 3.5oz/100g)
• Main Color (MC): Chestnut Tree Contrasting Color (CC): Rusty Road
• You can also use other worsted weight yarn. Testers had success with Brava Worsted as well as Lion Brand Heartland. 

Here is the yardage needed for MC (based off of estimates from testers):

XS 800 S: 900 M: 1,000 L: 1,200 XL: 1400 2X & 3X: 1500-1900

Yardage for CC: around 100-200 yards for each size 

Please note that the pattern includes a number of instructions for adjusting the fit of the sweater. If you do decide to adjust, the yardage may vary.

Hooks & Notions

• H (5mm) hook (or size to obtain gauge) – will be used for main sweater
• G (4.25mm) hook (or one size smaller than hook that obtains gauge) – will be used in ribbing sections
• Yarn needle

The Sizing & Fit: 

The pattern is written in sizes XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, and 3XL, while also giving you options to adjust the fit as needed. Pattern will be written in XS, with S-3XL in parenthesis. 

The fit: This sweater fits true to size. That means the finished measurements are the same as your bust measurement. Feel free to size up if you’d like a more oversized sweater (or vice versa).

Finished Bust Measurements: 30 (32.5, 37, 40, 44.5, 49, 53.5)”

Armhole depth: 6.5 (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12)”

Don’t see your exact bust measurement? Don’t worry. Here are some options you have:

Want an oversized sweater? Choose a size that is larger than your finished bust measurement.

Want a tight fitting sweater? Choose a size that is either your exact bust size, or 1 inch smaller. 

There will also be adjusting instructions within the pattern, so go ahead and choose a size that is closest to your measurement; then you’ll be able to adjust as needed within the pattern.

For reference, model is 5’ 4″ with a bust of 30.”

Gauge:

14 dc and 8 rows in dc in the round with larger hook = 4”

Feel free to try obtaining gauge with your desired yarn before buying the pattern! Just make sure you make your swatch in the round. You can do this simply by making a tube of dc.

What is a Crochet Raglan Exactly?

So now that we’ve covered the details about the Timberlane Sweater, let’s get into the details of raglans!

Raglan sweaters are super cool. But what exactly ARE they? Maybe you’ve heard the term, but you’re unsure what it means.

There’s a few things that characterize a raglan sweater:

First, they are worked from the top down, in the round. You’ll start at the neckline (in the case of this sweater, you’ll start with ribbing) and then make a yoke before splitting for the sleeves.

Now, if you’re not familiar with raglans, that might have sounded like it was written in a foreign language. So let me break it down a bit!

A raglan starts out as a square or rectangle. Increases at each corner form this shape. The technical term for it is a yoke.

So when you start off making a raglan, it won’t look exactly like a sweater!

Here is a picture of the Timberlane Sweater yoke while it is still in the yoke stage:

As you can see, the ribbing forms the neck-opening. The part with the colorwork will eventually become the front of the sweater, and the half across from it will be the back.

The two sections on either side (believe it or not) will actually become the sleeves!

Whenever you see a round in a pattern called “Splitting the Yoke” – this is the round where the sleeves, front, and back will be formed.

In the photo below, I have folded my yoke together – now it looks more like a sweater, does it not?

From here on out, you’ll simply work the body of the sweater, which is easy peasy after finishing a whole yoke.

Is a Raglan Sweater Seamless?

Now as you might have guessed, one of the beautiful things about raglan sweaters (and just top down sweaters in general) is that they are totally seamless!

What I mean is you will not need to do ANY sewing at the end (like paneled sweaters). Instead, you just crochet until you’re done.

I don’t know about you…but I think that is a beautiful thing.

Measuring a Raglan Sweater

One thing that people often get confused about with raglans is how to measure them. Especially when it comes to the “raglan depth.”

See, raglan sleeves are more of a “set in” type sleeve – they are NOT a drop sleeve that you might get from crocheting a sweater out of rectangles.

Because of that, it is important to pay attention to your row gauge when you’re crocheting a raglan. The height of your rows will form the “depth” of your raglan.

To know the depth measurement, you’ll just want to measure a side section of the raglan from the neck to the edge.

Also, make sure to try on your yoke before & after joining to make sure the depth fits nicely.
