Crocheting masculine items is always a delicate task. LOL. While many people think crochet has to be girly, it really does not! There are plenty of ways to make it masculine.

That is what I have been endeavoring to do with my series of mens crochet patterns (all designed for my boyfriend, who loves and supports my crocheting!) So far I have a scarf pattern, a hat pattern, and now a blanket pattern!

How do you crochet a man a blanket?

So how, exactly, do you go about making a manly blanket? It’s really not too hard. These are the steps I personally take:

Step 1: pick a masculine looking stitch pattern.

Step 2: pick a masculine yarn + color.

Step 3: start working it up!

Sometimes, simple is best when crocheting for men. You (usually) don’t need to get fancy to please them.

With this pattern, I pretty much decided to go as simple as I could. The blanket will be made entirely from single crochet stitches. Nothing fancy at ALL. And yet, my boyfriend loves it! It’s thick, cozy, and super warm. And most importantly, not too girly.

Using Jumbo Yarn

Like I mentioned, this blanket is extra thick. And the reason for that is the yarn! This is a jumbo yarn crochet blanket pattern.

I used Bernat Blanket Extra Yarn to make it. This is very similar to the regular Bernat Blanket yarn, except it is thicker (in the #7 jumbo weight category!)

If you’re wondering how to crochet with jumbo yarn, it’s really quite easy. You’ll just need a very large crochet hook (Q/15.75mm, to be exact). If you don’t already have this, you’ll need to purchase one at your local craft store like Joann’s or Michaels.

I do recommend waiting until it’s on sale to stock up, because this yarn gets expensive for a large blanket! Once you have your yarn and hook, you’re all ready to get started!

A Large Crochet Blanket Pattern

This crochet blanket is very large, to say the least. The pattern comes in a total of 6 sizes, from a throw all the way up to a king size bed. Pretty cool, right?

To give you an idea of how big it is, here is the whole thing laid out on a bed (in the previous photos it was folded).

This is actually only the twin size, but it fits on a king size bed just barely without any overlap on the sides, LOL.

Without further ado, let’s get right into the blanket pattern!

Jumbo Men’s Crochet Blanket – Free Pattern

Video Tutorial:

Explanation: Warm, cozy, and oh so thick – a men’s chunky crochet blanket pattern! Made from simple single crochet, this project can be made mindlessly while watching a show. The finished result is sure to please the man in your life.

Materials:

• Bernat Blanket Extra Yarn (100% polyester, 97 yds/87 m, 10.5 oz/300 g) 8-15 balls Indigo
• Yardage will vary depending on your tension and which size blanket you make. I used about 11 balls for the twin size. You may want to start with a few balls and get more as you need them since this yarn tends to be on the pricey side.
• Or a similar #7 jumbo weight yarn 
• Q/15.75mm crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge)
• Large Eyed Yarn needle

Gauge:

5 sc and 4 rows = 4” square

Make a small swatch with 8-10 sc and measure the 5 single crochet in the middle to get an accurate gauge measurement. For more information on gauge swatches, see this post.

Notes:

1. Ch 1 at beginning of rows does NOT count as a sc.
2. Measurements below (the twin through the king) are based on standard comforter sizes.

Measurements/Sizing: 

Lapghan: 45” by 50” 

Throw: 60” by 72”

Twin: 68” by 86”

Full: 78” by 86”

Queen: 90” by 90” 

King: 104” by 92”

The lapghan size will be shown first in the instructions, with the larger sizes in parentheses. Size shown in the photos is the twin. 

Abbreviations/Stitches Used (U.S.) 

Chain – ch

Single crochet – sc

Repeat – rep

Each – ea

Men’s Crochet Blanket Instructions:

Blanket:

Ch 57 (76, 86, 99, 113, 131).

Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and ea ch across, turn. 56 (75, 85, 98, 112, 130) sc

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn. 56 (75, 85, 98, 112, 130) sc

Continue to rep row 2 until you have the following amount of rows:

Lapghan: 50 rows

Throw: 72 rows

Twin: 86 rows

Full: 86 rows 

Queen: 90 rows

King: 92 rows

Finishing:

• Fasten off.
• Weave in all ends. I recommend weaving in these ends as securely as possible because blankets get used a lot and jumbo yarn can come out easily! I wove in the ends and then took a regular needle and thread and sewed down the last bit of the end to make sure it isn’t able to come out.

How to Crochet a Men’s Blanket – Tutorial

If you’re a beginner, some photos will probably be helpful as you make this blanket. That’s exactly what this next section is for!

Step 1:

To start off with your blanket, make sure you do the chain number specified for your size.

Step 2:

Once you finish your chain, we can begin the first row. Skip the first chain and make a single crochet stitch into the second chain from your hook:

Step 3:

Single crochet all the way across the row. Just make one single crochet in every chain (in the tutorial I just have a few stitches for demonstration purposes, but you’ll want to keep going all the way across!)

Step 4:

Next, make 1 chain and turn your work so that you’re ready to begin row 3. Make a single crochet in the very first stitch, and then keep making single crochets across the row.

Pictured below is the first 3 stitches of row 3:

Step 5:

Keep repeating row 3 until the blanket reaches your desired length!

Crocheting blankets for men is a fun and simple process that can be done in a variety of ways. This free pattern uses the simplest of stitches to get a no-nonsense look that a man is sure to love. Mens Crochet Hat Pattern with Bulky Yarn

I used #5 bulky weight velvet yarn to make this mens crochet hat. Yes, I used BLACK VELVET YARN and yes, it was very difficult to see the stitches! LOL.

I know this will not be doable for everyone, but don’t worry! You have lots of options. You can either use a different color of velvet yarn that is easier to see, or you can change up the look and use a regular bulky weight yarn!

If you do decide to go with the latter option, I would recommend picking something very soft, with an even texture. Just know that the look of the beanie will be a bit different if you decide against using velvet.

Isaac Beanie Crochet Pattern For Men

All right, let’s get onto the free pattern!

• Pin this pattern to your Pinterest Boards

Materials:

• Bernat Velvet Yarn (100% polyester, 315 yds / 288 m, 10.5 oz / 300 g) 1 ball Blackbird
• Or a similar #5 weight velvet yarn (see notes for more info)
• H/5mm crochet hook (or size to obtain gauge)
• G/4mm crochet hook (or one size smaller than hook that obtains gauge)
• Yarn needle

Gauge:

First 8 rounds of hat = 4” in diameter

Notes:

1. Hat is worked in continuous rounds. Do not join at the end of rounds unless otherwise specified.
2. Place a stitch marker at the end of the first round and move it up for every single round. It is very easy to lose your place when working with velvet yarn, so you don’t want to skip this!
3. Ch 2 at beginning of rounds (on the brim) does NOT count as a stitch.
4. I recommend using any #5 weight velvet yarn for this pattern. However, if you would prefer not to use velvet yarn, feel free to swap out a similar weight. Just know the look will be very different (and make sure to obtain gauge!)

Measurements/Sizing for a Mens Hat

This hat pattern comes in 3 sizes, 1 of which is free here on the blog, and 2 others that are available in the premium pattern only. The free size is a men’s large, which should be a good size for many men. I have included all the sizing info here so you can see what ALL the measurements are.

To Fit Head Circumference: 22-23 (24-25, 26)”

Actual finished measurements:

Men’s medium: 20.5” circumference, 6.5” crown (this size is available in the premium pattern only)

Men’s large: 22” circumference, 7” crown (available for free!)

Men’s xlarge: 23.5” circumference, 7.5” crown (this size is available in the premium pattern only)

Choose a size that measures 2-3” SMALLER than your head circumference. To get a warm, tight-fitting hat you will want to have that negative ease. If you prefer your hats looser, size up. For reference, the size shown is large, worn on a 25” head.

How to Crochet a Beanie for a Man – Instructions

Crown:

Make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: 7 sc in magic ring, do not join. Place stitch marker in last sc.  (7 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in every sc around. (14 sc)

Rnd 3: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (21 sc)

Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (28 sc)

Rnd 5: (Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (35 sc)

Rnd 6: (Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (42 sc)

Rnd 7: (Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (49 sc)

Rnd 8: (Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (56 sc)

Rnd 9: (Sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (63 sc)

Rnd 10: (Sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (70 sc)

Rnd 11: (Sc in next 9 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 7 times. (77 sc)

Round 13: Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (Sc in next 11 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 6 times. Sc in last 6 sc. (91 sc)

Rnd 14: Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc. (Sc in next 12 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 6 times. Sc in last 6 sc. (98 sc)

At this point your flat circle should measure 7”. It is important that your circle meets this measurement to achieve the right finished size. If your circle measures less, add one more round with just 2 increases spaced to put each increase on opposite sides.

Body of Hat:

Rnd 15: Sc in each sc around. 91 (98, 105) sc

Work in even single crochet rounds until your hat measures approximately 8.5” from top to bottom when laid flat. (Or until hat reaches your desired length!)

Last Rnd: Sc around entire hat. Join with a slip stitch to first st. (98 sc)

Brim/Ribbing:

Rnd 1: Ch 2 (does NOT count as a st), dc around hat. Join with a sl st to first dc, TURN.

Rnd 2: Ch 2, (fpdc in next st, dc in next st) around. Join with a sl st to first fpdc (NOT ch-2). Do not turn. 

Rnds 3-5: Ch 2, (fpdc around next fpdc, dc in next dc) around. Join with a sl st to first fpdc (NOT ch-2). Do not turn. 

Finishing:

• Weave in all ends, fold brim up, and enjoy!

FAQ About Mens Crochet Beanie Patterns

How do I make sure my hat fits?

In order to make sure your crocheted hat fits, you want to pay attention to the finished measurements, gauge, and ease included in the pattern. For the Isaac Beanie, it is important that you choose a finished size that is 2-3″ SMALLER than your actual head size. This will result in a snug, warm beanie.

How do you crochet a large beanie?

To make crochet beanies larger, you just have to keep adding increase rounds! The bigger the crown of your hat is, the bigger the finished circumference is. In the premium version of the Isaac Beanie, I have an extra-large size that will fit very large heads (up to 26-27″!)

Can I make this beanie in regular bulky weight yarn?

You can, just know that the look will be very different. The velvet yarn I used gives this hat a unique, soft look and a warm feel.

Can I adjust the size of the brim?

Yes! You can easily make the brim of this hat longer or shorter. To make it longer, just keep repeating the same as you did for rounds 3-5.

Can I make this hat for women or children too?

Yes! You just have to make the size of the crown smaller. I am actually working on sizing this pattern for women and children right now! Keep a lookout for when that is all done and released.

Have you ever made a Men’s Crochet Scarf?

It can be intimidating to crochet for men. You have to get just the right stitch—it can’t be too feminine, but also not boring.

Last Christmas, my boyfriend had hinted at wanting a crocheted scarf. So, I decided it was time to tackle the project and find the perfect stitch for a men’s scarf.

I chose to make an Alpine Stitch Scarf!

When I decided to make the scarf, I started searching for the perfect stitch. It proved harder than I thought to find the perfect one…but I finally settled on the Alpine Stitch!

In case you’re wondering, the Alpine Stitch is a rich textured stitch that uses front post double crochet and single crochet. It’s really not hard to learn! With the right color, it makes a great masculine stitch pattern.

Men’s Scarf Crochet Pattern With Lion Brand Yarn

While you can use any worsted weight yarn to make this scarf, I used one of my favorite Lion Brand yarns…

It’s a Lion Brand Heartland Pattern!

Heartland is one of my all time favorite yarns for scarves. The two colors I used for this scarf are Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Because the colors have a marled effect, it makes the scarf look extra rugged and manly! Heartland is the perfect yarn for this pattern, but you can use similar medium weight yarns as well.

How long should a men’s crochet scarf be?

The first thing I looked into when I started designing my first men’s scarf is length. How in the world do you know how long the scarf should be? Especially if you don’t want to try it on them as you go? (I didn’t want to because it was a Christmas gift)

I researched it a bit and found a few guidelines that were helpful:

1. You can make the scarf as long as they are tall
2. OR, you can make the scarf the same length as their arm-span when stretched out

Overall, I ended up writing this pattern in 3 lengths:

• Regular – 60″
• Long – 73″
• Extra Long – 87″

My boyfriend is about 5′ 11″ tall, and I made the long version for him, which is just a few inches longer than his height. And, it fits him great!

How wide should a men’s crochet scarf be?

While we’re on the topic of men’s crochet scarf dimensions, you might also be wondering how wide a scarf like this should be. A good width for a men’s scarf can easily range from 5-7″.

This scarf in particular measures 5.5″ across. However, this is very easy to adjust using the stitch multiple!

Let’s talk about the Stripes!

I chose to make this into a striped crochet scarf pattern…and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The large sections of dark brown, and small sections of woodland green work perfectly together!

Alpine Stitch Scarf Crochet Pattern for Men

All right, let’s get on to the scarf crochet pattern!

Materials:

• Lion Brand Heartland Weight 4 Medium (94% acrylic, 6% Rayon, 251 yds/230 m, 5 oz/ 142 g) color A – Sequoia 2 skeins, color B – Kings Canyon 1 skein 
• Or, approximately 570 yards of worsted weight yarn
• I/5.5mm crochet hook 
• Yarn needle

Notes:

1. Scarf is worked width-wise in one long rectangle. 
2. Ch 1 at beginning of rows does NOT count as a stitch.
3. You can easily adjust the width of this scarf by using any odd number of stitches to achieve desired width.. If you are starting with a fsc (as the pattern is written) you can adjust it to any ODD number of fsc. If you would like to start with a traditional chain, you can adjust it to be any EVEN number.

Measurements: 

Width: 5.5”

Length:

• Regular: 60”
• Long: 73”
• Extra Long: 87”

Note: Pattern is written in one size, but with instructions to get to the 3 lengths listed above.

Gauge: 

17 stitches and 13 rows in stitch pattern = 4”

This gauge is provided if you would like to get your scarf to look as much like the picture as possible. Because scarves are not fitted in any way, you can feel free skip gauge if you so desire, and simply follow the adjusting instructions to get the right size.

Skill Level

Intermediate – this scarf is not too hard to make, but you will need to know how to make front post double crochet stitches. For a full list of stitches used, see below.

Crochet Mens Scarf Written Instructions & Tutorial:

Fsc 23 (or any ODD number, if you’d like to adjust the width of your scarf). If you’re unfamiliar with fsc, see this video.

Row 1: Ch 1, dc in first fsc. Dc in each fsc across, turn. (23 dc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first dc. Sc in each dc across, turn. (23 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, dc in first sc. Fpdc around second dc from 2 rows below. Dc in next sc. *Skip one dc from 2 rows below, fpdc around next dc from 2 rows below. Dc in next sc. Rep from * across, turn. (11 fpdc, 12 dc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across, turn. (23 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, dc in first two sc. *Fpdc around next dc from 2 rows below, dc in next sc. (note that all fpdc from here on out will be worked in regular dc sts from 2 rows below). Rep from * until 1 sc is left. Dc in last sc, turn. (10 fpdc, 13 dc)

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across, turn. (23 sc)

Row 7: Ch 1, dc in first sc. *Fpdc around next dc from 2 rows below, dc in next sc. Rep from * across, turn. (11 fpdc, 12 dc)

Row 8-17: Rep rows 4-7 twice, then repeat rows 4-5 once.

Row 8: Rep row 4.

Row 9: Rep row 5.

Row 10: Rep row 6.

Row 11: Rep row 7.

Row 12: Rep row 4.

Row 13: Rep row 5.

Row 14: Rep row 6.

Row 15: Rep row 7.

Row 16: Rep row 4.

Row 17: Rep row 5. 

Row 18: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across. On last sc, complete last YO with CC to prepare for stripe. 

Rows 19-22: Rep rows 5-8, but use CC.

This is what your work should look like as you start row 19 in the new color:

Rows 23-40: Continue to work in the established stitch pattern with MC, changing colors in the same way as before.

Note: if all the “row repeats” confuse you, just think of it this way: you’re basically doing 4 rows in the CC, and then 18 rows in the MC, over and over again using the established stitch pattern the whole time.

ANOTHER NOTE: if you would like to minimize the amount of ends you have to weave in, carry the MC up the side of the scarf at the end of every single crochet row so that it will be ready to work with again after Row 22 is finished. This may look noticeable as you work it, but from a distance you can’t tell at all. See below/video tutorial for more information.

Continue to work in the established stitch pattern, doing 18 rows of MC and 4 rows of CC, for the following amount of rows:

Regular: Work to row 194

Long: Work to row 238

Extra Long: Work to row 282

If you are not following gauge at all, you can simply keep going in the stitch pattern until the scarf reaches your desired length. 

Finishing: fasten off and weave in all ends. Since the Alpine Stitch tends to curl on the edges, make sure you block the scarf to flatten it out (I used steam blocking!)

Get 10 masculine crochet stitches that are perfect for men’s crochet patterns! Plus, I’ll show you how to use these manly stitches in your crochet to make projects like scarves!

It can be hard to crochet for men…don’t you agree? Not only are there fewer men’s crochet patterns out there, but it can also be hard to find crochet stitches that are masculine.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think my boyfriend would quite appreciate a scarf that is made from lacy shells or girly puffs

Recently, I actually designed my first men’s crochet scarf, and during that process, I sure had a HARD time deciding on a stitch!

Since I love crochet lace, I just wasn’t accustomed to the stitches that would look good on men.

I’ll show you which one I finally settled on in a bit (and show you the pattern too!) But first, let’s talk about how you can use ANY stitch to make a custom scarf for the man in your life.

Use These Masculine Crochet Stitches to Make Men’s Scarves

I’m about to show you 10 masculine crochet stitches that are perfect for men’s scarves…but not all of them include a pattern written for a scarf.

Some of them do, and I’ll show you those in the list; but did you know you can make a custom scarf even when a pattern isn’t included?!

That’s right you can, and it’s not hard! Here are the steps you can take:

1. Choose the masculine stitch you want to use
2. Look for the stitch multiple. This is the key to making your project bigger or smaller.
3. Once you have that multiple, simply make a foundation row (using either fsc or chains).
4. You’ll just want to make that row as wide as you want the scarf to be. For example, if the stitch multiple is 3, you could chain 30. If you want a wider scarf, you could chain 39. (It all depends on the yarn you’re using. However, a good width for a man’s scarf is between 5-6 inches).
5. Once you have that first row done, simply continue in the stitch pattern until the scarf reaches your desired length!

Crochet Stitches for Men’s Blankets

You can do the EXACT same thing as I showed you above if you want to make a men’s blanket with these stitches! The main difference is that your starting row will be much much larger.

Another tip as far as blankets go: you could even make a men’s sampler blanket using several of these sections—just alternate between large sections of your chosen stitches!

10 Masculine Crochet Stitches – the List!

All right, with those things in mind, I think it is time to show you all the masculine stitches perfect for men’s projects!

#1: The Alpine Stitch

I have to say, I put this stitch first because it is pretty much my favorite masculine stitch. I already designed a scarf with it and gave it to my boyfriend for Christmas (see below!)

#2: The Pinecone Stitch

Normally, I think bobbles and puffs look girly, but not in this stitch! The way the puffs are arranged make them look like pinecones, and “foresty” feels always look perfect for men in my opinion!

Next up, the waffle stitch! This stitch has some wonderful texture in the shape of squares.

There’s just something about a knit-look effect that looks great on men! The Camel Stitch uses an awesome technique called half double crochet in the 3rd loop to get that perfect knitted look.
