Only 2 crochet stitch patterns left for December, and this is one of them! Today I want to show you how to crochet the Tinsel Stitch—once again, we’ll be using the surface crochet technique to form a truly unique stitch pattern!

Do you use tinsel to decorate your tree? It’s funny, because in my house, my dad always loved tinsel, and my mom hated it. She would say, if we wanted to put tinsel on the tree, we had to do it ourselves. She didn’t want any part in that mess!

That being said, I love the look of tinsel, and so I created a stitch inspired by it! As we learn how to crochet the tinsel stitch, we’ll be using a technique called surface crochet. Be sure to keep reading to find out more info about this technique!

Before beginning surface crochet, there are a few terms you need to know:

Background Square: this is the piece of fabric we will begin with making for each stitch pattern. It is usually a simple square using either sc or dc. I have added some rows that include chain spaces because we will work around these when we do the surface crochet.

Ch/Sc Rows: These are the rows I mentioned above! I will need to refer to them within the stitch patterns as ch/sc rows, because we will work our surface crochet mostly in these rows. As I said before, they are not just straight sc, but sc with chain loops.

This stitch is also apart of a larger series called the Desert Blossom Stitch Along, which is running throughout all of 2019! Be sure to join the community in my Facebook Group HERE.

You can also view a Master List of all the stitch patterns that have been released! This way, you’ll be able to see pictures of all the individual stitches and learn your favorites!

Want to get rid of the ads? This stitch pattern is available as apart of a PDF bundle with 3 OTHER stitch patterns—all my December stitches! There are some pretty cool Christmas-themed stitches I know you’ll want to see! From this PDF, you can easily print out the patterns, or view it without ads.

Last thing before we get to the pattern…if you make this stitch, please share pictures!! I absolutely LOVE it when I’m able to see what you guys are making!
How to Crochet the Tinsel Stitch

All right, let’s get started on this stitch pattern!

To Pin this Tutorial to your Pinterest Boards, click HERE

To get the PDF version of this pattern (+3 bonus stitch patterns!) click HERE

To get the ENTIRE Desert Blossom Stitch Dictionary, click HERE

NOTES:

Stitch pattern is multiple of 2+1

Ch 3 at beginning of rows counts as dc

Ch 1 at beginning of rows does NOT count as sc

MATERIALS

You can potentially use ANY yarn and hook for this stitch. However, here’s what I used:

Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver)

Sport weight yarn (for “tinsel” – I used Vanna’s Glamour)

H/5mm hook

F/3.5mm hook

Instructions:

NOTE: For a picture tutorial going along with these written instructions, be sure to view the video above! It will show you pictures to help with any tricky steps. You can pause it at any time if you need to focus in on a given step!

Background Image:

With MC, fsc a multiple of 2+1 (to start with a chain stitch, you’ll need a multiple of 2, and then one row of single crochet).

Row 1: Ch 3, dc across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc. *Ch 2, sk next dc, sc in next dc. Rep from * until 1 dc left. Sc in last dc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in next sc. Dc in ea sc and ch-sp across, turn. Rep rows 2-3 until square is as big as you want.

Last row: Ch 1, sc across, fasten off.

Surface Crochet:

With silver yarn, join with a sc around the post of the second sc from Row 2 (the ch/sc row). *Ch 2, sc around dc from the row above. Ch 2, sc around the post of next sc from Row 2. You have now finished one “zigzag”.

Rep from * across the row. Basically, you are just creating a zigzag pattern by working in the sc from the Ch/Sc row, alternating with the dc in the row above, all while doing chs in between your sc. Once you work around your last sc, ch 3 and sc around the post of the last dc (make this toward the top of the dc)

Ch 3, and turn your work upside down so that you will be able to work your way across again from the opposite direction. Now sc around the post of the first sc from row 4 (the next ch/sc row). Ch 2, sc around the post of the 3rd dc from row 5.

Continue to repeat these steps across, zig-zagging your chains between dc and sc. When you get to the end of this row, you will do the same thing, just turning your square back around the right way again. Keep zig-zagging across the square until you’ve gone across all the sc/ch rows!

I hope you have enjoyed learning how to crochet the Tinsel Stitch. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I would love to help!

July is coming to a close! Today we will learn how to crochet the trellis stitch, the last stitch of the month!

This stitch uses post stitches and v-stitches to create a neat trellis effect! When I asked for name suggestions on Instagram, some of you said it also looked like a garden gate.

Which I actually loved! But “Garden gate stitch” just didn’t sound right. So Trellis Stitch is second best!

If you haven’t joined my Stitch Along yet, it’s not too late! I’m releasing 4 stitch patterns per month, and you can jump in at any time! Be sure to join the Stitch Along community in my Facebook group HERE. Or follow me on Instagram to see new stitches there.

You can also view the master list of stitches that have been released so far by clicking HERE! There are definitely some more cool ones you will want to check out.

One of the goals of the #desertblossomstitchalong has been to empower you guys to expand your crochet knowledge and take the step out into designing.

It has been AWESOME to see some of you designing patterns with these stitches!

Last thing before we get started on this stitch: I created a bundle of 4 stitch patterns on Etsy which can be found here. Included is the Trellis Stitch, plus 3 OTHER stitch patterns (all of the ones from July, see picture below!) The stitches are written out for easy printing. Find this bundle HERE!

Ok, so if you’ve been following my Stitch Along, then you know that the stitch I released last week was the Twisted Stitch.

This week’s stitch is a variation of that! While the twisted stitch required you to work behind a stitch, the Swirl stitch will have you work in FRONT. More explanation will come with the tutorial, don’t worry!

If you haven’t joined my Stitch Along yet, it’s not too late! Be sure to join the Stitch Along community in my Facebook group HERE.

You can also view the master list of stitches that have been released so far by clicking HERE! There are definitely some more cool ones you will want to check out.

Last thing before we get started on this stitch: I created a bundle of 4 stitch patterns on Etsy which can be found here. Included is the Twisted Stitch, plus 3 OTHER lace stitch patterns (all of the ones that will be released in June!) The stitches are written out for easy printing.

This is a great textured stitch. In fact, I think you could see a lot of different designs within the pattern of the stitches! I couldn’t think of a name when I was first making it, so I put it up on my Instagram stories for suggestions.

Some people saw honeycombs, lattice, Eiffel towers…crazy right? I finally settled for a simple suggestion, the diagonal post stitch.

This stitch is not the first one I’ve shared…in fact, I’ve made so many that its hard to keep track!

In fact, I’ve shared over 40 stitch tutorials here on the blog, and they vary from crocheted lace, to shells, to post stitches, and more!

You can view the master list of stitches that have been released so far by clicking HERE! There are definitely some more cool ones you will want to check out.

Ad-Free Stitch Bundle

If you love the comfort of printing out ad-free patterns, I have just what you need! I’ve created a bundle of 4 stitch patterns on Etsy which can be found here. Included is the Diagonal Post Stitch, plus 3 OTHER stitch patterns. The stitches are written out for easy printing!

If you’re new to post stitches, don’t be scared off! This is a great introduction to them, as there is nothing too fancy involved.

This stitch is not the first one I’ve shared this year…I am sharing one new stitch per week for the year of 2019! We have a community of people who are “stitching along” together and learning new techniques. If you haven’t joined yet, it’s not too late! The great thing about this is that you can jump in at any time. Be sure to join the Stitch Along community in my Facebook group HERE.

The Classic Shell Stitch is truly a classic. If you’ve ever seen something crocheted before, you’ve likely seen a variation of this stitch.

Have you heard about my Stitch Along? I am running a series all throughout 2019 where I publish four stitch patterns per month—one per week. If you haven’t joined yet, it’s not too late! The great thing about this is that you can jump in at any time. Be sure to join the Stitch Along community in my Facebook group HERE.

You can also view the master list of stitches that have been released so far by clicking HERE! There are definitely some more cool ones you will want to check out. Last week’s stitch was the Box Stitch.

Last thing before we get started on this stitch: If you want to get ahead on the stitches for May, I created a bundle of 4 Spring stitch patterns on Etsy which can be found here. Included is the Classic Shell Stitch, plus 3 OTHER lace stitch patterns (all of the ones coming in May!) The stitches are written out for easy printing.

I’m excited to share with you a fun new & free crochet stitch pattern called the Sunburst stitch!

I love the feeling of Spring when the cold starts to melt away and the sun comes shining through. While the weather is usually fickle where I live (you’ll think its getting warmer, and then there will be a sudden frost) this is always how I imagined Spring should be. Haha.

Anyway, the Sunburst Stitch is a pretty lace stitch pattern perfect for Spring! It is part of my larger stitch library, which includes over 40 stitch patterns altogether!

Access the free stitch library here, or keep scrolling to learn about the Sunburst Stitch!

In addition to that library, you can also check out a bunch of crochet stitches perfect for scarves, masculine crochet stitches, and even advanced crochet stitches.

I love how little plants start “sprouting up” around the time of March. There’s something so beautiful about the winter melting away and Spring coming to stay.

That is what inspired me to make this stitch!
